MEM SOP Word Limits: 250 to 2,500 Words

There is no single MEM word count. Published limits run from 250 words to 2,500, several programs publish none at all, and the 800–1,000 figure repeated across sample pages matches almost none of the list below.

The published limits, program by program

The 800-1,000 word rule is folklore

The guides that circulate teach one number: 800 to 1,000 words, "unless mentioned otherwise". On this list it fits Stanford and the upper bounds at Berkeley and Warwick, and misses everything else.

An applicant who writes 900 words because a sample page said so is 20% over Northwestern's hard 750, 80% over Purdue's recommendation and Windsor's cap, and 260% over UIUC's personal statement — while leaving more than half of Tufts' allowance unused.

The rule to replace it with is simple: there is no default. Find the number on the program's own page, and when the program gives a range with a preference inside it — Warwick's "closer to 500 words" — write to the preference, not the ceiling.

When a program publishes no limit

Several large programs publish nothing. Northeastern's College of Engineering guidance is the single sentence "Include a Statement of Purpose." USC Viterbi says "There is no standardized format or length for the Personal Statement (Statement of Purpose), but we can provide some general guidelines" on its graduate admission FAQ. Cornell M.Eng describes both of its essays without capping either, and Duke publishes no limit for its short answers on either of the two pages where it lists them.

When nothing is published, match the shape of the question rather than borrowing a number:

• A one-clause prompt is one to one-and-a-half pages.
• A prompt with three or four clauses is a section per clause; length follows from that.
• A short-answer box is a short answer — 200–400 words unless the portal says otherwise.
• If the portal shows a character counter, the counter is the limit, whatever the website says.

Warwick gives two different answers

Warwick publishes two different length rules for the same application. Its WMG department advice says "Aim for between 500 and 1000 words" and adds that the department prefers "a more concise and focused essay closer to 500 words." Its central postgraduate guidance says "Personal Statements should be approximately 1-2 pages." Both were live on September 12, 2026.

The practical resolution: the department page governs the department's program, so a WMG applicant writes the WMG number. Where two rules conflict and you cannot tell which applies, follow the more specific page — the one belonging to the program you are applying to — and it is reasonable to ask the admissions office.

Pages, characters, and "two pages double-spaced"

A page is not a word count, and programs that specify pages are specifying a format. Useful conversions, assuming 12-point type and one-inch margins:

When a program names a font and size — Stevens and Texas A&M both specify 12-point Times New Roman — shrinking the type to fit is visible to the reader.

Common questions

How long should a MEM SOP be?

As long as the program says. Across the programs above, the published range is 250 to 2,500 words, with the largest cluster between 500 and 1,000. If your program publishes nothing, 600–900 words for a single statement is a defensible default — but check the portal for a character counter first.

What if the program gives no word limit?

Match the prompt. Answer every clause the question contains, then stop. An unguided statement that runs long reads as an applicant who could not decide what mattered.

Can I go over the limit?

Where a program states a maximum, treat it as a maximum. Purdue is the rare program that says explicitly that "slightly longer statements (1-2 pages) are permitted" past its recommended 500 words; most do not offer that, and some portals simply cut the text off.

Is a page the same as 500 words?

Only single-spaced, in 12-point type. Double-spaced, a page is closer to 250 words — which is why Dartmouth's "maximum of two pages" and Tufts' "five pages (2,500 words)" are not the same kind of instruction.
