MiM Work Experience Limits: Do You Qualify?
MiM work-experience limits differ. Compare LBS, Duke, INSEAD and Ross, count postgraduate work accurately and clarify borderline eligibility.
MiM Work Experience Limits: Do You Qualify?
There is no universal MiM work-experience limit. Some programs cap postgraduate experience, some ask borderline applicants to contact admissions, and others say full-time experience is not required. Check the exact program, the counting method and the relevant date.
Our recommendation is to resolve eligibility before using an essay to explain why you want the degree. A compelling story cannot substitute for a required admissions decision about your background.
This guide belongs to the graduate application collection. If the broader question is whether to study now or build more experience, read MiM versus MBA; this page focuses on how to check and document the experience rule.
Four schools, four instructions to read carefully
The following comparison was checked September 24, 2026. It is a guide to the published wording, not an eligibility ruling for an individual applicant.
| Program | Current published position | What to clarify for your case |
|---|---|---|
| London Business School MiM | Recent graduates, with a maximum of two years of postgraduate work experience | Graduation timing, postgraduate work and the applicable counting date |
| Duke MMS: Foundations of Business | More than two years of full-time postgraduate work requires contacting admissions about eligibility | Whether your particular work history fits the program |
| INSEAD MiM | Full-time professional experience is not required; business exposure is valued | Any concern about your experience profile; absence of a minimum is not a statement of unlimited eligibility |
| Michigan Ross MM | Current application requirements say three or fewer years of full-time work after the undergraduate degree | The applicable counting date and any degree-background restriction |

The difference between “maximum” and “contact us” matters. Do not translate both into automatic rejection at the same number of months. Equally, “not required” describes a minimum; it does not establish that every experienced applicant is an appropriate candidate.
Count the right kind of experience
LBS explicitly distinguishes work after graduation from internships completed during study. Its FAQ says internships during your studies do not count toward its two-year postgraduate limit. That does not mean the internships disappear from your application or have no value.
Keep an accurate history with these fields:
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Degree completion | The date your undergraduate degree was completed or awarded, with any ambiguity noted |
| Each role | Employer or organization, title, start and end dates |
| Work pattern | Full-time, part-time, internship or another arrangement |
| Relationship to study | Before, during or after the degree |
| Overlap | Concurrent roles or study periods that should not silently be double-counted |
| Future period | Work you expect to complete before enrollment |
This is a record for checking requirements, not a universal formula. A school may define a category differently from the way your employer labels it. If that classification affects eligibility, ask rather than adjusting the description to obtain a favorable total.
For example, an internship after graduation is not automatically excluded simply because an internship during study would be excluded. The timing and program wording matter. Send the facts to admissions and retain the answer.
Application date and enrollment date are not interchangeable
A candidate can have twenty months of experience when applying and substantially more by the start of the degree. If the public instruction does not specify which date controls the cap, do not choose the more convenient date yourself.
A useful inquiry gives both: “I completed my degree in June 2024 and began full-time work in August 2024. I would have this amount of experience at the application deadline and this amount at enrollment. Which date do you use for this program's experience requirement?”
There is no need to write a persuasive personal statement in that email. The admissions team first needs an accurate timeline. Once eligibility is resolved, your essay can explain the purpose of the degree.
Avoid resigning from a useful role simply to manipulate an assumed count. You may sacrifice income and experience without changing how the program evaluates your background. Clarification is a better first action than an irreversible career move.
What to do when the school's pages disagree
Check both the current application requirements and the program FAQ, then compare them with the portal for your intake. Ross' current application requirements say three or fewer years of full-time work after undergraduate study, while its MM FAQ has carried a two-year limit. Confirm the rule for your intake with admissions, especially if you fall between those thresholds.
If you encounter a genuine conflict, do not average the rules or silently select the more favorable one. Identify the disagreement in a short message and ask admissions to confirm the rule for your intended intake. Include both URLs and your dates.
You can use the current application instructions for provisional planning while still treating a borderline case as unresolved until the school confirms it. A search snippet, saved screenshot or forum answer may describe a different cycle.
Save the response with the date and program name. If the application portal later presents a different attestation, resolve that discrepancy too. An old email should not be stretched into permission to submit something inaccurate.
Check the undergraduate-degree rule separately
Meeting an experience limit does not settle all eligibility questions. Ross' current requirements describe a program for non-business backgrounds and generally exclude business degrees, while offering a process to request an exception review.
An applicant with a BBA can therefore face a different question from an engineering graduate with the same work history. Do not assume every MiM has the same background policy, or that one school's exception process applies elsewhere.
For a business graduate who is eligible at a particular school, the next issue is what the program adds. Our MiM value guide separates curriculum, recruiting and opportunity cost. Repeating familiar coursework may still serve a purpose, but that purpose needs evidence.
For non-business applicants, limited commercial exposure is not the same as having nothing to contribute. Academic projects, part-time responsibilities and community work can show initiative and collaboration when accurately described.
Eligibility is not the same as career fit
Even with written confirmation that you can apply, ask whether the program's recruiting model fits the experience you will bring. A degree aimed at early-career entrants may not support the seniority you expect after several years of work.
Conversely, lack of full-time experience does not automatically make you unprepared for a program that is designed for recent graduates. The question becomes what you have learned through the experiences available to you and why business study is the next useful step.
Constructed example: a graduate with several undergraduate internships might have strong evidence of teamwork and informed career interest while having little postgraduate work under a particular school's definition. Another candidate with two years in one job may have deeper responsibility but an unresolved eligibility date. Neither can be assessed by the raw number alone.
The right application explains the evidence honestly. It does not hide experience to appear younger or inflate internships to sound more senior.
How to write about limited experience
Choose examples in which you made a decision, took responsibility, learned from feedback or worked with other people toward a result. Explain the context and your contribution rather than relying on a title.
An essay can show readiness through a project without pretending it was a professional engagement. Label academic work as academic. Distinguish a volunteer responsibility from employment. Clear boundaries make the evidence easier to evaluate.

Questions applicants ask
Does a gap after graduation count as work experience?
A period without work is not automatically professional experience. But some programs also care about how recently you graduated. Record both the graduation date and the employment timeline, then check the exact eligibility wording.
Do part-time work and family-business work count?
Do not assume one universal treatment. Provide dates, hours, responsibilities and the relationship to your studies when asking the program. Describe the work consistently across the application and resume.
Can I get the essays reviewed once eligibility is clear?
Yes. The MiM and MMS written-response review uses your application questions and answers. It does not determine admissions eligibility or assess video interviews. The graduate review overview explains the service and the distinction between application writing and program requirements.
Do your answers show why this management degree fits?
Paste your program’s questions and your draft answers. Get feedback on the goals, experience and contribution each question actually asks for.
