National Service and US College: Essays and Timing
National service and US college: Singapore will not defer NS for a degree, so apply and defer or apply while serving. Deferral rules and essay limits.
National Service and US College: Essays and Timing
Decide the timing before the essay. Singapore's Central Manpower Base says: "Deferment will not be granted for degree courses, even if you have already begun the course." So you have two routes: apply in your final school year and ask the US college to hold your place, or apply while serving. Harvard, Cornell and Syracuse all publish deferrals of up to two years for required military service.
Our view: once the timing is settled, the essay is easy to get wrong in one direction. Write about one judgment you made in uniform, not the uniform. A reader does not need your unit, your camp or how conscription works. They need to see how you decide under orders. When you write it up, the free activities list review checks that your service entry shows the work you did.
Every government, college and Common App page quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. Service rules change, and each college decides its own deferrals, so confirm both before you commit.
Country rules at a glance
| Country | What the official source says | Checked |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore | CMPB: "Deferment will not be granted for degree courses, even if you have already begun the course." (page last updated 13 April 2026) | October 30, 2026 |
| Singapore | LifeSG: "If you are applying to an overseas university, you will have to check with the university if they are able to reserve a place for you until you have completed NS. If not, you will have to submit your university application at a later date, such as while you are serving NS." (page last updated 8 October 2025) | October 30, 2026 |
| Israel | We found no official English page we could quote on studying at a US college around service. Check with the Israeli military authorities directly | Not verified |
| South Korea | The Military Manpower Administration's English site loaded, but we found no page we could quote on deferring service for a US undergraduate degree. Check with the Administration directly | Not verified |

We left out Israeli and Korean specifics on purpose. Rules about ages, deferral and travel for conscripts are exact and change, and a wrong line here could cost you a year. If you are from either country, get the rule in writing from the authority before you plan your applications.
LifeSG also describes disruption, a different thing from deferment: "You may apply for disruption from NS to start university if you enlisted for NS later than your peers in the same academic cohort." Read that page if it applies to you.
What US colleges say about deferring for service
| College | What it says (verbatim) |
|---|---|
| Harvard | "Deferrals for two years are also considered for such purposes as military or religious service or under other unique circumstances, and subject to the approval of the admissions committee." |
| Cornell | "Cornell will typically defer a student's offer of admission to permit them to complete required military service." |
| Syracuse | "An exception may be made for students who must complete two years of mandatory national military service. In these cases a two-year deferment will be permitted." |
Read the small print too:
- Aid may not carry over. Syracuse says: "Need-based financial aid may not be deferred. Students must reapply for financial aid by the deadline listed below." For how aid affects the decision itself, see need-aware financial aid for international applicants.
- No college classes during the deferral. Harvard says: "you may not enroll as a degree or diploma candidate in a university or secondary school during your interval year." Service is not enrollment, but a part-time degree course during NS would be.
- Deferral is a request after admission. Cornell tells an admitted student wishing to defer that "you can submit an official request" through the applicant portal. "Typically" and "considered" are not promises.
These are three colleges, checked on one day. Every college on your list sets its own policy, so find each one's deferral page before you apply.
Apply before service and defer, or apply while serving
| Apply in final school year, then defer | Apply while serving | |
|---|---|---|
| Your results | Predicted grades | Final results in hand |
| Recommenders | Teachers who taught you this year | Teachers you left a year ago |
| Your counselor | At school, easy to reach | Must be contacted by email |
| Essay material | School-year experiences | Service experience as well |
| Time to write | School timetable | Limited free time and leave |
| Main risk | The college refuses the deferral, or aid does not carry over | Deadlines fall during training |
Our view: if the colleges you most want publish a service deferral like the three above, apply in your final school year and defer. Your teachers, counselor and school routine are all in place, and the deferral rule is already public.
The countercase: if your predicted grades undersell you, or your list includes colleges with no published service deferral, apply while serving. Final results are stronger evidence than predictions, and the application can include what you did in service. Reapplying to US colleges in a gap year covers the same "final results as new evidence" logic.
Keep three things separate. The published requirement is each country's service rule and each college's deferral policy. Our recommendation is the table above. The unknown is whether a given college will approve your specific request.
Logistics while serving
- Recommenders. Use school teachers who know your academic work. Common App supports Counselor, Teacher, "Other recommender" and Advisor types, per its international counselor deck, and "Advisors do not submit forms". Add a commander as an Other recommender only if a college says it accepts one.
- School forms. Your school still completes the School Report. Princeton's international page says that "if you have already graduated, your counselor or school official does not need to submit a Midyear Report", and, where leaving exams are part of graduation, asks your school official to "submit predicted or achieved results as they become available."
- Interviews and tests. LifeSG says time is set aside in training schedules for local university interviews and tests, and that outside these periods "you can request time-off or apply for leave to do so, based on your training schedule." Plan around your leave, and ask for a video interview if a college offers one.
- Email. Use a personal email you can check while in camp. Deadlines do not move for training.
Writing about service
What to leave out, in our recommendation:
- unit names, camp names, locations and dates of exercises or operations
- weapons, equipment or procedure detail
- names or ranks of anyone else
- patriotic or political framing, and any view on whether conscription is right
- a paragraph explaining how national service works
The reader needs one sentence of context. Then they need you.
Constructed example: one judgment as a section leader
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): a conscript who led a section of eight. No unit, place or date is named. The excerpt is 150 words, our count.
On the third night of the exercise, one of my eight men stopped talking. He was walking, carrying his load, answering when spoken to. He had just stopped talking.
The plan said we would reach the next point by two. I could make it if we kept the pace. I halted us for ten minutes behind a ridge instead, and sat next to him, and asked about his dog. He talked for nine minutes. Then he stood up first.
We arrived at two-forty. My platoon sergeant asked why. I told him. He wrote something in his book and did not say whether it was good.
I still do not know whether it was the right call. I know what I was weighing: a time on a plan against a person I could see. I want to study psychology because I want to know what I was looking at that night.
Why it works: the service is the setting. The essay is about a decision, its cost (forty minutes) and an honest uncertainty. Nothing in it could identify the unit or another person.
Constructed example: the service entry in your activities
Common App's 2026–27 update deck says the section is now "Activities and experiences", the "position/leadership" field becomes optional, "Time commitments for post-high school experiences can be reported more accurately", and "Character limits for activity names, roles, and descriptions will not change." The printable application's grid has a "PG (Post-graduate)" column for grade level.
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement.
Position: Section leader, full-time national service
Grade level: PG · Hours: 60 per week · Weeks: 52
Description: Led 8 conscripts through training; ran daily checks, welfare reports and fitness program; trained 2 new section leaders.
The description is 120 characters, our count. Use the live form's limit. For more entries like this, see Common App activities list examples. Where else a year away from school goes on the application is covered in gap year college essay: examples and where it goes.

Questions about national service and US college
Can I defer a US college offer for Singapore national service?
Some colleges publish that they do. Harvard considers two-year deferrals for military service, Cornell "will typically defer", and Syracuse permits two years for mandatory national military service. Each college decides, after admission.
Should I apply before or during national service?
Apply before and defer if your target colleges publish a service deferral. Apply during service if your predictions undersell you or your colleges do not publish one.
Should I write my college essay about national service?
It can work if the essay is about one decision you made, not about the service itself. Leave out every operational detail.
Can my commander write my recommendation?
Use school teachers for the required letters. A commander can be an Other recommender only where a college accepts one.
Do alumni interviews still happen if I am serving?
Interview rules vary by college. Plan your leave around them; see do alumni interviews matter. Applying to graduate school after service instead? See military service gap in a graduate SOP.
