NZ Master’s: Six Points Still Need a Job

An eligible New Zealand master's can now provide six Skilled Migrant Category qualification points. It does not remove the requirement for a qualifying skilled job or job offer from an accredited employer. Six points are one part of residence eligibility.

What the August change actually does

Immigration New Zealand's qualification changes took effect on August 24, 2026. Under the current SMC rules, checked September 12, a New Zealand Level 9 master's can provide six points when it includes at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand and the applicant also holds a bachelor's degree.

The current table awards five points when the New Zealand master's does not meet those conditions. Doctoral degrees receive six qualification points. An old chart assigning five points to every master's misses the changed treatment of qualifying New Zealand study.

The same SMC page requires a skilled job or offer from an accredited employer, with the applicable hours, pay and employment conditions. Applicants must also meet age, English, health and character requirements. The age ceiling is 55. An expression of interest and the subsequent application process still have to be completed.

This is an SMC Resident Visa pathway. A later Permanent Resident Visa is a separate application with its own requirements; receiving an academic qualification is neither document.

Our recommendation: investigate the qualifying job as seriously as the degree. If your comparison stops at six points, it stops before one of the hardest practical questions.

Check qualification and employment separately

Make two evidence folders rather than one optimistic points total.

Qualification folder: record the awarded level, bachelor's evidence, full-time enrollment and weeks actually studied in New Zealand. If the program involves transferred credit, use the master's enrollment-week check before assuming the timetable answers every immigration question.

Employment folder: identify the actual employer, accreditation, duties, contracted hours, pay and duration. Compare those details with the current SMC job requirements. A familiar title such as “analyst” does not establish how the role is classified.

Then run this decision procedure:

1. Confirm whether your qualification evidence supports six points or a different result.
2. Identify whether you have a qualifying job or only a plan to find one.
3. Check the remaining personal and application conditions.
4. Reassess the plan if one folder remains incomplete. A stronger statement cannot replace missing eligibility evidence.

Illustrative missing-job case

Imagine an Indian applicant with a bachelor's degree who completes a qualifying New Zealand master's and can support the six-point qualification claim. Their only offer is a twenty-hour-per-week role.

The current skilled-job requirement includes at least 30 hours per week. In this invented example, the points do not convert that offer into a qualifying job. The applicant needs to assess an eligible employment situation and the remaining conditions before treating residence as achievable through this route.
