PA School Interview Day: Format, Length, Attire

PAEA's sample PA interview days run a morning: its in-person sample schedules for programs run from 7:30 to 11:50 a.m. and from 8:30 a.m. to noon. In the panel sample, each applicant's panel interview is one 30-minute slot. The rest of the day is a welcome, a tour, breaks and a roundtable.

So stop rehearsing answers for four hours. PAEA's guide tells programs the day "allows for evaluation of the applicant's interaction with students, faculty, staff, committee members, and other program or institution personnel." The tour, the student panel and lunch are not scored interviews, but they are observed time. Prepare for the 30 minutes as an interview and for the rest as a working day with colleagues you have just met.

Every program and PAEA page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. Programs set their own formats, so read your invitation before anything here.

What PAEA's sample PA interview days look like

PAEA publishes a PA Program Admissions Resource (2023) for programs, not applicants; its statement of what an interview is for is quoted on the PA school interview questions bank. Its Appendix B gives three sample days.

PAEA sample (2023)LengthYour interview timeThe rest
Traditional (one interviewer, one applicant)7:30 to 11:50 a.m.Each interviewer has six slots between 8:05 and 11:30Welcome and program introduction at 7:30; "Closing Session & Next Steps" at 11:50
Panel (several interviewers, one applicant)8:30 a.m. to 12:00One 30-minute panel slotWelcome, campus tour, Q&A, two breaks, "Wrap-up & Roundtable w/program director"
Virtual MMI3-hour block, two sessionsSix 8-minute stationsSeparate sessions for a program overview and current students

Our arithmetic: the traditional sample runs 4 hours 20 minutes. In the panel sample, one 30-minute slot is one-seventh of the 3.5-hour morning. In the MMI sample, six 8-minute stations add up to 48 minutes.

A real program's day follows the same shape. West Chester University's PA admissions page says: "Interviews consist of a program presentation, Q&A session, campus tour, and individual interview with multiple members of the PA Program Admissions Committee." It says interviews "are typically scheduled August through February."

The formats themselves vary by program. In PAEA's CASPA Program Directory for 2026-2027, 215 of 333 program pages list traditional interviews, 131 group, 113 MMI, 73 panel and 37 a "Scenario Room" (programs can list several; our count of pages collected October 31 to November 6, 2026). Programs fill in these pages themselves. For the questions, see our PA school interview questions; for the group format, the PA school group interview activity guide.

On-site or virtual

197 of the 333 directory pages say an on-site interview is required; 134 say it is not, and two give no answer. "Not required" does not mean virtual only. Programs run both:

  • OHSU: "Interviews take place in the fall, both virtually and in person." (OHSU PA admissions)
  • USC Keck: "Interviews are conducted in Alhambra or virtually between September to March each cycle. Interviews are conducted on a rolling basis and are subject to cancellation if the cohort is fully seated." (USC PA admission)

USC's last sentence matters for scheduling. At a rolling program, a later date is a date on which there may be fewer seats left, or none. Our recommendation: take the earliest date you can prepare for, at rolling programs especially.

Scheduling and changing your date in CASPA

Some programs schedule through CASPA. The CASPA help center's Viewing Interview Requests page (last modified June 18, 2026) says programs may list interviews on your My Interviews page. If a program lets you choose, "click Schedule and select the date and time that works best for you. You must click Save for your selection to be recorded and shared back with the program."

Changes do not go through CASPA: "If you want to change the interview date or time that either you or your program selected, contact your program directly." The CASPA Admissions Code of Cooperation asks applicants to accept or decline interview invitations in a timely and considerate manner, so if you will not attend, tell the program as soon as you know. The PA school decline and withdraw email templates cover that email.

Writing stations and timed essays on the day

The directory has no field for an on-site writing exercise. Of the program pages we checked for this wave, Hardin-Simmons University lists one: its interview process includes a critical thinking writing assessment (Hardin-Simmons PA program). PAEA's guide also notes that some programs give situational judgment tests before or during interview day; the Casper guide quotes it. If your invitation lists a writing exercise, this is a plan for a 20-minute one.

Constructed example: a 20-minute on-site writing prompt

Constructed example, written by us, not a real program's prompt.

You have 20 minutes. A patient tells you she has stopped taking her blood pressure medication because she cannot afford it, and asks you not to tell the supervising physician. What do you do, and why?

A 20-minute plan:

  1. Minutes 0 to 3: name the two duties in conflict (her trust; her safety and the team's need to know). Write them as one sentence each.
  2. Minutes 3 to 6: decide. Pick an action and the reason before you write a paragraph.
  3. Minutes 6 to 16: write three short paragraphs: what you would say to her, what you would tell the team and how, and what you would do about the cost problem itself.
  4. Minutes 16 to 20: reread for one thing only: does every paragraph serve the decision you named in minute 6?

This is the same reasoning a Casper or MMI answer needs, in writing. Our Casper and one-way video interview guide and PA school MMI ethics questions cover it in those formats.

What to wear and bring

None of the program pages quoted here publishes an interview dress code. Our recommendation: business professional, in clothes you have already worn for a full day, and shoes you can walk a campus tour in. For virtual days, the same top half, a plain background, and nothing that moves on camera. For more on clothing, the medical school interview attire guide applies to PA days too.

Bring what the program asks for. USC, for example, says: "Interviewees are required to submit a passport-sized photo ID." Beyond that: a printed copy of your CASPA application, the program's mission statement, three questions you cannot answer from its website, a water bottle, and the program's phone number in case you are late.

Virtual interview setup

  • Camera at eye level, face lit from the front. Sit far enough back that your hands show when you gesture.
  • One sticky note, not a script. Three words you want to land. A script makes you read, and readers look down.
  • A fallback. Have the program's phone number and your phone charged. If the connection drops, call, then rejoin.
  • Test the platform the day before, with the same device, room and time of day.

Interview-day checklist

  1. Confirm the date, time zone and format in CASPA's My Interviews page or the program's email.
  2. Reread your CASPA application and any secondary for that program. Interviewers may have it.
  3. Prepare three questions using our list of questions to ask at a PA school interview.
  4. Plan the observed time: arrive early, learn the student ambassadors' names, and be the same person at lunch as in the panel.
  5. Write down the names of everyone who interviewed you before you leave. You need them for the PA school interview thank-you email.

Questions about PA school interview day

How long does a PA school interview last?

In PAEA's sample panel day, one 30-minute slot inside a 3.5-hour morning. MMI stations in its sample run 8 minutes each. Your program's invitation gives the real length.

Are PA school interviews virtual or in person?

Both. 197 of 333 directory pages say an on-site interview is required. OHSU and USC run both virtual and in-person interviews.

Can I reschedule a PA school interview in CASPA?

No. CASPA's help center says to contact the program directly to change a date or time.

Am I being evaluated on the tour and at lunch?

PAEA's guide tells programs interview day allows evaluation of your interaction with students, faculty and staff. Act as if you are.

Review the writing you send next

After the interview, the next thing you write is an update or a letter of intent. Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent against GradPilot's medical school letter of intent and interest rubric, the closest fit for a PA letter: it checks whether the letter ties a feature of the program to your own reason for attending. For news since you applied, the update letter rubric checks what changed and what it adds; if you are rewriting your statement for next cycle, use the CASPA personal statement rubric.
