What to Wear to a Medical School Interview (2026)

Wear business professional clothes: a suit, or a blazer with trousers, a skirt or a dress. That is the whole rule on the pages we could check. AACOM says "Be neatly and appropriately dressed in professional business attire," and UGA's MD page says "Attire is business professional." Neither sets a color, a cut or a different rule by gender. Idaho COM goes one step further: "Business formal is recommended".

We checked 17 official pages on November 7, 2026: AACOM's interview guidance and 16 MD and DO school admissions pages. Four say anything about clothing. The other 13 say nothing at all. If a school sends its own dress note with your invite, follow that note over anything here.

Our view: stop shopping once you own one business outfit you can sit, walk and be on camera in. The published guidance fits in one sentence, and none of the pages we checked lists clothing among what it assesses. The hours are better spent on your answers, starting with the questions you will be asked.

The countercase: if your only suit no longer fits, or you have nothing that reads as business professional, buy or borrow one outfit. Fit and comfort matter more than brand, because you may wear it for a full day.

What the official pages say

SourceWhat it says about clothing
AACOM (DO, all schools)"Be neatly and appropriately dressed in professional business attire."
UGA School of Medicine (MD, virtual MMI)"Attire is business professional." On Zoom: "Use a neutral background that does not blend in with what you are wearing."
Idaho COM (DO, virtual for 2026-2027)"Professional interview attire is expected. Business formal is recommended"
Rowan-Virtua (DO, virtual for 2026/2027)"Dress appropriately! Dress as though you were in an in-person interview (cover all of you not just the top half)"

The 13 school pages with nothing on clothing were Stanford, Wake Forest, Kaiser Permanente Tyson, OHSU, UC Davis, NYU Grossman, Virginia Tech Carilion, PCOM, TouroCOM, KCU, ATSU-KCOM, Rocky Vista and Midwestern's AZCOM catalog. AAMC's applicant pages returned HTTP 403 when we tried them on November 7, 2026, so this page quotes nothing from AAMC.

What "business professional" means for any gender

The pages above give one standard for everyone. Any of these meets it:

  • A matching suit (jacket and trousers or skirt) with a shirt or blouse.
  • A blazer over a dress, or over trousers or a skirt that are not denim.
  • Closed shoes you can walk in, such as dress shoes, loafers or low heels.

Choose by fit and comfort. None of the pages mentions a tie. Religious and cultural dress, such as a hijab, turban or kippah, fits inside business professional; none of the pages sets any rule against it.

Virtual interviews

Several schools on these pages interview virtually in 2026-2027. Rowan-Virtua says "All interviews will be conducted virtually for the entire 2026/2027 DO application cycle," and UGA runs its MMI "via Zoom". Three published rules change what you wear on camera.

  • Dress fully. Rowan-Virtua: "cover all of you not just the top half". If you stand up for a technical problem, you are still in an interview.
  • Contrast with your background. UGA: "Use a neutral background that does not blend in with what you are wearing." A navy jacket against a navy wall disappears on video.
  • Set the camera, then dress for it. Rowan-Virtua says "Raise device so your screen is at your hairline" and "Place soft bright lighting behind your computer facing you". Check your outfit in that framing, not in a mirror.

Our virtual medical school interview tips covers the camera and platform setup in full.

In-person days and shoes

An in-person day can be long and include walking. ATSU-KCOM's afternoon group runs from "around 11:45 am" to "around 4:45 pm", with "a tour of the campus" and "a tour of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine". Virginia Tech Carilion asks interviewees to "reserve time from 7:45 a.m. until approximately 3:30 p.m. (EST)".

Our recommendation: wear shoes you have already walked in for a full day. Bring a coat if the tour may go outside in winter.

Two interview days compared

The same applicant needs different choices for these two days (constructed scenarios based on the school pages above).

What to bring

Only a few items are in the official guidance:

  • Water. UGA: "Have water on hand during the interview."
  • A silenced phone. UGA: "your phone on silent". Rowan-Virtua: "Silent all cell phones and other devices".
  • Time. AACOM: "Arrive 10-15 minutes early for your scheduled appointment."

Our recommendation, beyond those: a folder with a copy of your application and the questions you plan to ask, and a pen. Our list of questions to ask at a medical school interview helps with the second.

The night-before checklist

  1. Read your invite again for any dress or platform instructions. They override general guidance.
  2. Lay out one business professional outfit, tried on that week.
  3. Virtual: check the outfit on camera against your actual background and lighting.
  4. In person: choose broken-in shoes and a layer for outdoor tours.
  5. Pack water, a pen and a folder, and plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early.

Questions about what to wear

Do I have to wear a suit to a medical school interview?

No page we checked requires a suit. AACOM and UGA ask for business professional attire, which a suit meets and so does a blazer with trousers, a skirt or a dress. Idaho COM recommends business formal, so wear a suit there if you own one.

What should women wear to a medical school interview?

The same standard as everyone: business professional. None of the 17 pages sets a separate rule by gender.

What do you wear to a virtual medical school interview?

The full outfit you would wear in person. Rowan-Virtua says to "cover all of you not just the top half", and UGA asks for a background that "does not blend in with what you are wearing."

What should I wear to a DO school interview?

AACOM's rule for DO interviews is "professional business attire". KCOM-style days with tours need comfortable shoes.

Review the writing you send next

What you wear is settled in one evening; what you write after the interview is read by the committee. Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent against GradPilot's medical school letter of intent and interest rubric, which checks whether the letter ties a stated feature of the school to your own reason for attending. For news since you applied, the update letter rubric checks that the letter names what changed.
