Virtual Medical School Interview and Virtual MMI Tips
Virtual medical school interview tips quoted from schools' own pages: camera, light, device, video rounds, MMI timing, and a dropped-connection email.
Virtual Medical School Interview and Virtual MMI Tips
Of the 18 medical school interview pages we checked, 14 say interviews are virtual, and 2 more offer a virtual option. The schools have already written the setup checklist: Rowan-Virtua tells you to "Raise device so your screen is at your hairline", and Georgia tells you to "Have other tabs closed on your computer".
What no school writes for you is the first minute after your connection drops. That is an email, and you should write it before interview day, not during it. This page gives the schools' own setup rules, the timing of virtual MMIs and recorded video rounds, and a constructed email and rejoin line you can adapt. For how each school structures its day, see the MD schools that use the MMI table and the medical school essays hub.
Every school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. Several pages give no cycle year; the table says so.
Who is virtual this cycle
| School | What its page says | Cycle the page states |
|---|---|---|
| NYU Grossman | "conducting all multiple mini interviews for the 2026 admissions season virtually" | "2026 admissions season" |
| NYU Grossman Long Island | "All interviews are conducted virtually" | No year |
| UC Davis | "Interviews are conducted virtually" | No year |
| UC San Diego | Emails "instructions on how to join the virtual MMI setting" | No year in the interview section |
| Kaiser Permanente Tyson | "virtual format from September 2026 through February 2027" | 2026-2027 |
| OHSU | "remote for the current admissions cycle" | "current admissions cycle" |
| Zucker Hofstra/Northwell | "The virtual interview day" | No year |
| University of Georgia | "virtual, closed Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) Process"; "via Zoom" | No year in the interview section |
| Arizona, Tucson | Recorded first round "through the AMP portal", then "a full virtual Applicant Visit Day" | No year in the interview section |
| Wayne State | "all virtual and mandatory"; "Interviews are virtual through AMP" | "Effective date: July 2025" |
| Wake Forest | "requiring invited applicants to complete a virtual interview" | No year in the interview section |
| Rowan-Virtua SOM (DO) | "All interviews will be conducted virtually for the entire 2026/2027 DO application cycle." | 2026/2027 |
| Rocky Vista (DO) | "Applicant interviews will be conducted virtually" | No year in the interview section |
| Idaho (DO) | "ICOM conducts all interviews virtually (via Webex Platform)" | 2026-2027 |
| PCOM (DO) | "a choice of either virtual or on-campus interviews" | Materials deadline March 1, 2027 |
| KCU (DO) | "conducted virtually or in-person" | No year |
| TouroCOM (DO) | "All interviews during the 2025-2026 admissions cycle will be conducted remotely" | Last cycle only |
That is 17 rows. The 18th school we checked, Virginia Tech Carilion, does not say whether its day is virtual. Our tally of the 18: 14 say virtual (the 11 MD schools from NYU Grossman to Wake Forest, plus Rowan-Virtua, Rocky Vista and Idaho), 2 offer a choice (PCOM, KCU), 1 describes only last cycle (TouroCOM) and 1 does not say (Virginia Tech Carilion).
Only Kaiser Permanente, Rowan-Virtua and Idaho tie the virtual format to the 2026-2027 cycle in so many words. For every other school, confirm the format in your invitation.
Schools' own setup checklists
These rules come from the schools, not from us. Rowan-Virtua's list is the longest; the others add to it.
| Rule (quoted) | School |
|---|---|
| "Raise device so your screen is at your hairline" | Rowan-Virtua |
| "Look at the camera lens to maintain eye contact (to avoid looking at how you appear on the video chat, click and drag the video of you to the top-center directly beneath the camera lens)" | Rowan-Virtua |
| "Place soft bright lighting behind your computer facing you" and "avoid any direct overhead lights" | Rowan-Virtua |
| "Choose your preferred device and practice on this device only to ensure its reliability" | Rowan-Virtua |
| "Join using a laptop or desktop computer (not a phone)." | Idaho |
| "Turn off and close all other applications or programs" | Rowan-Virtua |
| "Have other tabs closed on your computer, your phone on silent, and conduct your interview in a quiet space." | Georgia |
| "Use a neutral background that does not blend in with what you are wearing." | Georgia |
| "Dress as though you were in an in-person interview (cover all of you not just the top half)" | Rowan-Virtua |
| "Avoid swivel chairs and avoid distracting body movements" | Rowan-Virtua |
| "Test all the above again on the day of the interview" | Rowan-Virtua |
| "REMEMBER TO CONFIRM TIME ZONE DIFFERENCES" | Rowan-Virtua |
| "Log in 5–10 minutes early in case tech support is needed." | Idaho |
If your internet or equipment is the problem, Rowan-Virtua says so directly: "Interviewees with limited access to internet and/or technology should feel free to contact the Office of Admissions". Ask early. A school can solve a known problem in advance; it cannot solve it at 8:55 on the morning of your interview.
Our view: use the platform the school names, on the device you will use, at the time of day you will interview. Rowan-Virtua names WebEx, Georgia names Zoom, Idaho names Webex, and Wayne State and Arizona use their AMP portal. A practice call on a different platform tests the wrong thing. The countercase: if the school has not yet told you the platform, practice on any of them for camera height, light and eye line, which carry over, and repeat the full test once the link arrives.
Recorded video rounds
Arizona Tucson adds a step most interview advice skips. After the secondary, applicants complete a "first-round admissions interview" that "consists of two timed video responses". The page says: "For each question, applicants will have a total of four minutes to review the prompt, prepare their response and record their video." It must be done "within the designated two-week time frame", and it "is not intended to assess specific scientific knowledge". Hackensack Meridian's interview rule also covers "asynchronous (recorded) interviews".
Four minutes covers reading, planning and recording, so the split is yours. Our recommendation: spend about 45 seconds reading and planning, record for about two and a half minutes, and leave the rest as a margin so the recording does not cut you off mid-sentence. Practice it like this:
- Write ten prompts on cards: five "tell us about" questions and five short scenarios.
- Set a timer for four minutes. Turn a card over and start the timer.
- Read, jot three words, then record on your phone or laptop.
- Stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence. Watch it back once.
- Repeat until you finish with time to spare on five cards in a row.
There is no interviewer to nod or ask a follow-up, so your answer has to carry its own structure: the point first, one example, what it shows.
Virtual MMI specifics
The on-screen MMI differs by school in ways that change your practice:
- Read time. Georgia and Hofstra give two minutes to read and six to answer. UC San Diego gives "2 minutes to read the vignette" and "8 minutes at each station". Wayne State gives "one minute to read a scenario and 5 minutes to respond". At NYU Grossman, "your interviewer will verbally present an open-ended question as your prompt", so there may be nothing to read.
- Notes. OHSU says "Before the 8-minute interviews, you will have time to read over the prompt, prepare and take notes." Keep paper and a pen in reach and off camera if your school allows notes.
- Rest stations. At NYU Grossman, "Two of these stations are 'rest' stations." Stay in frame and stay quiet; the next station starts on its own clock.
- Neutral raters. At Wayne State, MMI raters are "People from the community who are trained in MMI rating", and the "Rater will remain neutral and not provide response or feedback." On video a neutral face can look cold; at Wayne State it is the stated format.
- Waiting time. UC San Diego splits applicants into two groups, which leaves "approximately 90 minutes of 'down time'". Plan food, water and a charger for the whole window.
The question types are covered in MMI questions and sample answers, and the stations with an actor in MMI role-play stations.
If the connection drops
Our view: draft a two-line rejoin sentence and a three-sentence email the night before, and save the coordinator's phone number where you can see it. The basis: schools publish contact details and troubleshooting time, but none of the pages we checked tells you what to say. Wayne State's day starts with a 10-minute welcome session that "Contains logistical and troubleshooting information for the session". Idaho asks you to log in early "in case tech support is needed". Rowan-Virtua lists a phone number, 856-566-7050, for interview questions. Wayne State says: "If you have concerns or would like to request a re-interview, contact the Office of Admissions at mdadmissions@wayne.edu or call 313-577-1466." The countercase: if your school's pre-interview email gives its own instructions for a lost connection, follow those instead of this script.
Before the day, find three things in your invitation or orientation email: the coordinator's email, a phone number that is answered on interview day, and whether there is a backup link or dial-in. If any is missing, ask for it when you confirm your slot.
Constructed example: the rejoin line and the email
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's message.
If you get back into the room within a minute or two, say one sentence and continue (constructed, 24 words):
I'm sorry, my connection dropped. I was saying that the family needed the decision explained in plain language first. May I continue from there?
If you cannot get back in within about two minutes, call the number you saved, then send this (constructed, 3 sentences):
Subject: Connection lost during 9:40 a.m. MMI — Noa Vale, application ID 00000000
Dear Ms. Odhiambo,
My internet connection dropped at 9:46 a.m. during station 3 of my MMI today, and I have not been able to rejoin the link. I am available by phone at (555) 010-0199 and can rejoin immediately on a new link or reschedule the remaining stations, whichever works for your team. Thank you for your help.
Noa Vale
Why it is built this way: the subject line lets a busy coordinator find your file in seconds. The first sentence gives the time and the station, which is what they need to match your slot. The second gives one way to reach you and leaves the choice to them. There is no apology paragraph and no explanation of your router. If the drop cost you a station, Wayne State's page shows that some schools name a re-interview route; ask for one by name only where the school offers it.
Generative AI during interviews
At least one school states a rule. Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine's admissions page says:
"To protect the integrity of this process and ensure fairness for all applicants, the use of generative Artificial Intelligence tools to assist in answering interview questions is prohibited and applies to all forms of interviews, including live virtual interviews, in-person interviews, and asynchronous (recorded) interviews. Any applicant found to have violated this direction may be disqualified from the admissions process. If a violation is discovered after an offer of admission has been extended, that offer may be rescinded."
The same page has a separate rule for its secondary application. Other schools' rules on AI are collected in health application AI policies compared.
Questions about virtual medical school interviews
Are medical school interviews virtual in 2026-2027?
At most of the schools we checked, yes. 14 of the 18 pages say interviews are virtual, though only Kaiser Permanente, Rowan-Virtua and Idaho state that for the 2026-2027 cycle. PCOM and KCU offer a choice. Your invitation email is the final word.
What should I wear to a virtual medical school interview?
The same as in person. Rowan-Virtua says "Dress as though you were in an in-person interview (cover all of you not just the top half)". Idaho says "Business formal is recommended". More on attire in what to wear to a medical school interview.
Where should I look during a virtual interview?
At the camera lens, not the screen. Rowan-Virtua says "Eye contact is everything, stay focused on the camera lens on your device and not how you appear on screen".
Can I use my phone for a virtual interview?
Idaho says no: "Join using a laptop or desktop computer (not a phone)." Rowan-Virtua lists phones as possible but says "we highly recommend using a computer".
What happens if my internet cuts out during a virtual medical school interview?
Rejoin if you can and finish your sentence. If you cannot, call the coordinator and send a short email with your name, ID, the time and the station. Use the constructed email above as a starting point.
Review the writing you send next
After a virtual day, the next document is usually a letter of intent or an update letter, and you send it the same way you interviewed: through a portal or an email. Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent to check that it ties a stated feature of the school to your reason for attending, or review your update letter to check that it names what changed since you applied.
If you have not replied to your invitation yet, start with how to reply to a medical school interview invite. Your setup has to last the whole day, not only the interview: see what a virtual medical school interview day includes.
