Medical Schools That Use the MMI: 2026-2027 Table
MMI formats at 11 US MD schools, quoted from each school's interview page on Nov 7, 2026: stations, minutes, extra interviews, virtual or not.
Medical Schools That Use the MMI: 2026-2027 Table
Eleven US MD schools we checked describe a multiple mini interview (MMI) on their own admissions pages, and the formats run from six closed 8-minute stations at Georgia to five stations plus two separate 25-35 minute interviews at Wayne State. The label "MMI school" tells you less than the table below.
Most MMI lists that rank for this search are forum threads or UK prep pages that name schools without quoting them. We went to each school's interview page instead. The result: 7 of the 11 schools add a traditional-style conversation to the MMI, so an "MMI school" usually means you prepare both formats. For the wider picture of medical application writing, start at the medical school essays hub.
Every school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. Several pages state no cycle year for their interview section; the table says so where that is the case. Recheck the page and your invitation email before your day.
The table
"Traditional-style" means a conversation about you and your application rather than a scenario. "Not stated" means the page does not say.
| School (page) | MMI as the page describes it | Also on the day | Virtual? |
|---|---|---|---|
| NYU Grossman | "eight virtual stations", about 7 minutes each; "Two of these stations are 'rest' stations"; whole process "about an hour and fifteen minutes" | An "open-station" that "lasts 14 minutes" and is "similar in format to that of a traditional one-on-one interview" | Yes: "all multiple mini interviews for the 2026 admissions season virtually" |
| NYU Grossman Long Island | Scenario stations, "a station where you are observed having a nonclinical interaction with a standardized patient" and "a limited traditional interview station"; "about an hour" | "an interactive group activity to evaluate their teamwork and collaboration skills", also about an hour | Yes: "All interviews are conducted virtually, beginning in September and continuing through early December" (no year stated) |
| UC Davis | "Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format"; station count not stated; "closed-file (blinded)" | Not stated | Yes: "Interviews are conducted virtually", "Typically on Mondays and Fridays" |
| UC San Diego | "8 different rooms"; "2 minutes to read the vignette"; "8 minutes at each station" | "approximately 90 minutes of 'down time'" while the other group interviews | Yes: an email 2-3 days before explains "how to join the virtual MMI setting" |
| Virginia Tech Carilion | "Applicants rotate through scenario interview stations"; "No prior medical knowledge is required for the MMI" | "one traditional interview station"; day runs "7:45 a.m. until approximately 3:30 p.m. (EST)"; "A welcome event is held the night before" | Not stated |
| Kaiser Permanente Tyson | "a hybrid interview model"; station count not stated | "a traditional one-on-one interview with a faculty member" | Yes: "virtual format from September 2026 through February 2027" |
| OHSU | "a virtual Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) circuit"; "multiple 8-minute-long interviews" | "a longer one-on-one interview with a member of the admissions committee", "scheduled separately" | Yes: "remote for the current admissions cycle" |
| Zucker Hofstra/Northwell | "8 interview stations": 7 scenario stations of 2 minutes to read and 6 to discuss; "Approximately 90 minutes" in total | "1 open (traditional-style) interview station": 2 minutes to prepare, 14 to talk | Yes: "The virtual interview day" (no year stated) |
| University of Georgia | "a virtual, closed Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) Process"; "six stations", each "two minutes for reviewing the prompt and six minutes for responding" | Not stated | Yes: "via Zoom" |
| Arizona, Tucson | "two minutes to prepare" per station; "The MMI typically lasts approximately 60 minutes"; station count not stated | Before the MMI, a "first-round admissions interview" of "two timed video responses" | Yes: "During the virtual MMI" |
| Wayne State | "up to five Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI) stations", "one minute to read a scenario and 5 minutes to respond"; 35-45 minutes | A faculty or alumni interview and a medical student interview, each 25-35 minutes | Yes: "all virtual and mandatory" (page "Effective date: July 2025") |
What the table shows, in our arithmetic:
- MMI only, as published: 3 of 11 (UC Davis, UC San Diego, Georgia). Arizona adds a recorded first round before its MMI. The other 7 of 11 put a traditional-style conversation on the same day or schedule it separately.
- Total station time differs widely. Georgia's six stations at 8 minutes are 48 minutes of interviewing. Wayne State's five stations at 6 minutes are 30 minutes, but its two other interviews add 50-70 minutes. Hofstra's seven scenario stations (56 minutes) plus the open station (16 minutes) make 72 of its roughly 90 minutes.
- Read time runs from zero to two minutes. At NYU Grossman "your interviewer will verbally present an open-ended question as your prompt", so there is no reading screen. Wayne State gives one minute. Hofstra, UC San Diego, Georgia and Arizona give two.
- Kaiser Permanente is the only page here that dates its virtual window to this cycle in months and years (September 2026 to February 2027). NYU Grossman says "the 2026 admissions season". OHSU says "the current admissions cycle". The others state no year in the interview section.
How to check a school not in the table
No forum list replaces the school's own page. This takes ten minutes per school:
- Open the school's MD admissions pages and find the interview section. It is often a step on a "how to apply" page (UC Davis, Kaiser Permanente, OHSU) or a page of its own (NYU, Hofstra, Wayne State).
- Search the page for "MMI", "multiple mini", "station", "traditional", "one-on-one", "closed", "blinded", "virtual", "remote" and "Zoom".
- Write down the year the page states. If the interview section gives no year, record "no year stated" and confirm the format from your invitation email. UC San Diego sends joining instructions "Approximately 2-3 days before your scheduled interview date".
- Read the update policy on the same page. It decides what you can send after the interview. UC Davis says "No application updates are accepted after submission", with exceptions for major changes such as "citizenship status, nationally recognized award recipient".
- Check what the interviewer can see. Some schools publish it; the open-file vs closed-file interview guide sorts the published rules by access level.
If the page says nothing about format, the honest entry in your notes is "format not published", not a guess from a forum.
MMI vs traditional: what changes in your prep
Our view: at an MMI school, prepare a traditional answer set as well, unless the school's own page shows an MMI-only day. The basis is the table: 7 of the 11 pages add a traditional-style conversation, and Arizona says its MMI prompts "may include traditional interview questions (e.g., 'Why do you want to become a physician?')". The countercase: at UC Davis, UC San Diego and Georgia the published format is MMI only, so scenario practice deserves most of your hours there. Even then, keep a short answer to "tell me about yourself" ready; it costs little.
Use the format components on your schools' pages to set the prep:
| If the day includes… | Practice this | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Scenario stations with read time | Read a prompt for 1-2 minutes, then talk for 5-8 without notes running out | Hofstra, UC San Diego, Georgia, Arizona, Wayne State |
| A spoken prompt with no read time | Start answering within a few seconds of hearing the question | NYU Grossman |
| An open or traditional station | A 60-90 second tell me about yourself answer, why medicine, why this school | NYU Grossman, NYU Long Island, VTC, Hofstra |
| A separate one-on-one or faculty interview | A full traditional interview of 25 minutes or more | Kaiser Permanente, OHSU, Wayne State |
| A recorded video round | Timed responses with no interviewer reacting | Arizona |
| A group or standardized-patient station | Talking with a team or an actor, not about a scenario | NYU Long Island |
For the scenario stations themselves, the MMI questions and sample answers guide works through the question types. If your day is on screen, the virtual medical school interview tips cover the setup each school asks for.
What the schools say they are looking at. None of these pages asks for medical facts; all of them ask for visible reasoning. The qualities each school names are compared in what medical school interviewers look for.
Texas and DO schools
Texas schools that admit through TMDSAS are covered separately in Texas medical school interview formats by school. Osteopathic schools are different again: none of the nine DO school pages we checked on the same day describes an MMI. They describe panels and one-on-ones; see DO school interview formats by school.
Questions about medical schools that use the MMI
Which medical schools use the MMI in 2026-2027?
The 11 MD schools in the table describe an MMI on their own pages, checked November 7, 2026. They are NYU Grossman, NYU Grossman Long Island, UC Davis, UC San Diego, Virginia Tech Carilion, Kaiser Permanente Tyson, OHSU, Zucker Hofstra/Northwell, Georgia, Arizona Tucson and Wayne State. This is the set we checked, not every MMI school in the country. Use the five-step check above for any school not listed.
How many stations are in a medical school MMI?
It depends on the school. Among the pages that state a number: Hofstra and UC San Diego list 8, NYU Grossman lists 8 including two rest stations and an open station, Georgia lists 6, and Wayne State lists up to 5. UC Davis, Kaiser Permanente, OHSU and Arizona do not state a count.
How long is a medical school MMI?
The stated totals are "about an hour and fifteen minutes" at NYU Grossman, "about an hour" at NYU Long Island, "Approximately 90 minutes" at Hofstra, "approximately 60 minutes" at Arizona and 35-45 minutes at Wayne State. Individual stations run 6 to 10 minutes including read time.
Is the MMI virtual this cycle?
At 10 of the 11 schools in the table, the page says the MMI or the whole interview day is virtual. Virginia Tech Carilion's page does not say. Only Kaiser Permanente gives months and years for this cycle.
Do MMI interviewers see my application?
At UC Davis and Georgia, no: both call the MMI closed. At Wayne State the MMI "Rater has name of applicant". At Hofstra, the open station's "Interviewer has access to your full application". Other pages do not say.
Do I need medical knowledge for the MMI?
No, at the schools that address it. Virginia Tech Carilion says "No prior medical knowledge is required for the MMI". Arizona says its MMI "is not intended to evaluate scientific or clinical knowledge", and adds that "familiarity with current issues in health care may be helpful".
Review the writing you send next
After an MMI day, the next thing you write is usually a letter of intent to your first choice or an update letter where the school accepts one. Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent to check that it ties a stated feature of the school to your reason for attending, or review your update letter to check that it names what changed since you applied.
