DO School Interview Formats by School (2026-2027)
DO school interview formats at 9 colleges, quoted Nov 7, 2026: panel or one-on-one, virtual or campus, and what interviewers see. None describes an MMI.
DO School Interview Formats by School (2026-2027)
None of the nine osteopathic medical school pages we checked describes an MMI. Four describe a panel, one describes three separate 30-minute interviews, one says only that you meet "several faculty members", and three publish no format at all. The details that change your preparation are file access and who sits on the panel: Rocky Vista's interviewers are "blinded to the applicants' grades and MCAT scores", while Idaho's interviews are "open file".
Advice pages for "PCOM interview questions" or "KCOM interview questions" rarely quote the school. This page quotes each school's own admissions page and says plainly where a school publishes nothing. If you are also applying MD, the MD schools that use the MMI table covers the allopathic side, and the medical school essays hub collects the rest of the application.
Every school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. Several state no cycle year for the interview; the table says so. Confirm the format in your invitation email.
The table
| School (page) | Who interviews you, and for how long | Virtual or campus | What the interviewers see | Cycle the page states |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PCOM | "a personal interview"; format not described | "a choice of either virtual or on-campus interviews" | Not stated | Materials deadline "March 1, 2027"; interviews "begin in the summer term and will be conducted through the spring term" |
| Rowan-Virtua SOM | "approximately 30-45 minutes and is typically a board panel interview with members of the Admissions Committee" (faculty, professional staff, third- and fourth-year students) | "All interviews will be conducted virtually for the entire 2026/2027 DO application cycle." WebEx | Not stated; you get "biographical information about your interviewer" by email first | 2026/2027 |
| ATSU-KCOM | "three half hour long individual interviews with a basic science faculty member, a clinician, and a member of the Admissions team" | Campus: the day includes "a demonstration of osteopathic manipulation, and a tour of the campus" | Not stated | No year; interviews "typically in October" to start |
| Rocky Vista (RVUCOM) | "approximately 30 minutes in length and conducted by a two-person panel" | "conducted virtually" | Personal statement, supplemental application and letters; "blinded to the applicants' grades and MCAT scores" | No year in the interview section |
| Midwestern AZCOM | "an interview panel selected from a volunteer group of basic scientists, administrators, admissions staff, students, and clinicians"; length not stated | Not stated | Not stated; panel rates you "on a standardized evaluation form" | 2026-2027 catalog |
| TouroCOM | "an informational presentation and a formal interview"; "candidates will meet with several faculty members" | "All interviews during the 2025-2026 admissions cycle will be conducted remotely"; nothing stated for 2026-2027 | "full access to an applicant's record" | Last cycle only |
| KCU-COM | Format not described | "conducted virtually or in-person" | Not stated | No year; "starts in August and typically ends in January" |
| Idaho (ICOM) | "two ICOM Faculty members interviewing one applicant for 30 minutes" | "all interviews virtually (via Webex Platform)" | "All interviews are open file" | 2026-2027 |
| LECOM | Format not described: "Applicant interviews will be conducted throughout the application cycle" | Not stated | Not stated | No year |
We also tried the admissions pages of Michigan State's college of osteopathic medicine and NYITCOM on November 7, 2026. One returned a bot-check page instead of content and the other returned HTTP 404, so neither school is in the table. For any DO school not listed, AACOM's admissions interview page says: "For a full list of interview styles for each medical college, visit [sic] their school specific page in the Choose DO Explorer". Then confirm it on the school's own page.
What the table shows, in our arithmetic: 4 of 9 describe a panel of two or more interviewers at once (Rowan-Virtua, Rocky Vista, AZCOM, Idaho). 1 describes separate one-on-ones (KCOM). 1 says you "meet with several faculty members" without saying whether together (TouroCOM). 3 describe no format (PCOM, KCU, LECOM). That is 9.
Decision timing, where the page gives it: PCOM "usually notified within four to six weeks of their interview date"; KCOM, for Early Decision applicants, "within two weeks of interview" (regular "Decisions are released according to when you interview"); AZCOM "within four weeks of their interview"; Idaho "usually within two weeks of the interview date"; TouroCOM "usually … within two months of the formal interview".
What each format means for your prep
Our view: prepare for a DO interview as a 30-minute conversation about your file and your reasons for osteopathic medicine, not as a scenario circuit. The basis is the table: no page here describes scenario stations, and the stated lengths are 30 to 45 minutes. The countercase: PCOM, KCU and LECOM publish no format, so for those schools you cannot rule out anything until the invitation arrives. Keep one or two ethics scenarios practiced for them.
- Panel (Rowan-Virtua, Rocky Vista, AZCOM, Idaho). One answer has to work for a scientist, a clinician and a student at the same time. AZCOM's panel mixes "basic scientists, administrators, admissions staff, students, and clinicians". Answer the person who asked, then bring the others in with your eyes before you finish. The open-file vs closed-file guide has a panel answer worked through.
- Several one-on-ones in a day (KCOM). Three interviewers in a row will ask overlapping questions. Use the same true story more than once if it fits, but tell it from a different angle each time: what you did for the clinician, what you learned for the scientist, how you worked with others for the admissions team member.
- Blinded to grades and scores (Rocky Vista). The panel has your writing and letters, not your numbers. Do not open with your MCAT. Bring up academic context only if it explains something they ask about.
- Open file (Idaho, TouroCOM). Expect questions drawn from your secondary essays and activities. AACOM's advice applies directly: "Thoroughly review your application, essay, personal statement, and academic record prior to your interview day. Interviewers are likely to inquire about your background and accomplishments. Be certain of what you have written." Your DO secondary essays are fair game, so reread every one before the day.
- Format not published (PCOM, KCU, LECOM). Prepare the traditional set and a short scenario method, and read the invitation email closely.
School-specific questions to prepare
Only two pages in the table say what the interview covers, so those are the only school-specific claims here.
- Rowan-Virtua: "you should be prepared to discuss your Rowan-Virtua SOM DO application, your knowledge of and interest in osteopathic medicine, and how you believe your goals align with the mission, vision and values of Rowan-Virtua SOM."
- AZCOM: "Panel members assess applicants for their academic and personal preparedness for medical school, and their understanding of the osteopathic physician's role in the healthcare team."
- Idaho gives preparation advice in its FAQ rather than a list of questions: "Reflect on ICOM's mission, especially service, patient-centered care, and support for rural and underserved communities", "Practice behavioral questions ('Tell me about a time…')" and "Be prepared to discuss why osteopathic medicine and why ICOM."
Across all DO schools, AACOM's interview page lists what not to do, including "Try to guess what the interviewer wants to hear" and "Make excuses for past difficulties or challenges". For the hands-on side of "why DO", see OMM and OMT interview questions. For more question types, see DO school interview questions and answers.
Constructed example: answering "why osteopathic medicine" to a panel
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Jaden Vale is interviewing with a Rowan-Virtua-style board panel of a faculty member, a staff member and a fourth-year student.
The weak version (constructed):
I like that osteopathic medicine treats the whole person, mind, body and spirit. DOs are more holistic and focus on prevention. I also think OMM is a really useful extra tool, and I want to be the kind of doctor who listens.
The revised version (constructed, 99 words including the bracketed placeholder):
I first saw a DO work as a scribe in a family practice. A patient came in for back pain three times in two months. On the third visit, Dr. Ames asked about his job, found he was lifting at a warehouse after a layoff, and used OMT, then changed the plan to fit his shifts. That visit is why I applied DO. I want training that treats the structure of the body and the patient's situation as one problem, and [one program or value named on this school's own page] is where I would start doing that here.
Why the revision works: the weak version repeats phrases any applicant could say and claims DOs are "more holistic", which compares rather than explains. The revised version gives one observed visit, names what the physician did, and ends on a feature of the school. The bracket is deliberate: fill it with something the school's own page states, such as Rowan-Virtua's "mission, vision and values".
Questions about DO school interview formats
Do DO schools use the MMI?
None of the nine DO school pages we checked on November 7, 2026 describes an MMI. That does not cover every DO school. Check the school's page or the Choose DO Explorer for any school not in the table.
What is a DO panel interview like?
At the schools that describe one: Rowan-Virtua's is "approximately 30-45 minutes and is typically a board panel interview with members of the Admissions Committee", Rocky Vista's is "approximately 30 minutes" with "a two-person panel", and Idaho's is "two ICOM Faculty members interviewing one applicant for 30 minutes".
Does the DO interviewer see my MCAT?
At Rocky Vista, no: interviewers "will be blinded to the applicants' grades and MCAT scores". At Idaho, interviews "are open file". At TouroCOM, "Faculty members will have full access to an applicant's record". The other pages do not say.
Are DO interviews virtual for 2026-2027?
Rowan-Virtua and Idaho say all interviews are virtual for 2026-2027. Rocky Vista says interviews "will be conducted virtually" without a year. PCOM and KCU offer virtual or in person. KCOM describes a campus day. TouroCOM's page still describes only the 2025-2026 cycle.
Can I interview at more than one TouroCOM campus?
No. TouroCOM's page says: "You can only interview at one TouroCOM campus."
What if I need to cancel a DO interview?
AACOM says: "If for any reason, you must cancel, reschedule, or withdraw from an interview, contact the school promptly, courteously, and honestly. If you decide to cancel, the college will use the opportunity to invite another candidate".
Review the writing you send next
After a DO interview, the next document is usually a letter of intent to your first choice or an update letter with something new. Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent to check that it ties a stated feature of the college to your reason for attending, or review your update letter to check that it names what changed since you applied.
