Different doctoral programs use different processes

Berkeley's Jurisprudence and Social Policy PhD instead conducts Zoom interviews with shortlisted candidates. Our recommendation: identify the process before interpreting the silence. Reports from a different department, degree or year cannot establish that your application has missed a mandatory stage.

Classify the process before checking your status

Place each program in one of three categories:

1. Explicitly no interviews: Use the program's statement as the governing expectation. An informal conversation with a professor is not automatically an unannounced admissions requirement.
2. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed: Read who receives invitations, what the interview covers and any published communication instructions. Do not invent an invitation schedule from another applicant's report.
3. No clear public rule: Check the admissions FAQ and applicant instructions. If the process remains unclear, ask the program whether interviews form part of admission rather than asking it to predict your result.

Then inspect the application portal for missing materials or official messages. Check the contact address and email folders used by the application. These are practical completeness checks; they cannot establish your position in an unpublished shortlist.

If the program publishes a notification window, use the current cycle's version to decide when a status inquiry is appropriate. A social-media spreadsheet may contain truthful individual reports while still omitting programs, dates or stages that matter to you.

Worked example: a communication applicant sees interview posts

Illustrative case: An applicant to USC Communication sees several students celebrating PhD interview invitations and assumes that receiving none means rejection.

The USC FAQ changes the interpretation: this program does not use interviews as part of admission. The applicant has no basis to classify the missing invitation as a failed step. Their official decision remains pending until the program issues it.

A Berkeley JSP applicant reading the same posts faces a different published process because JSP interviews shortlisted candidates. They should check that their application is complete and monitor the official channels. But the policy alone does not reveal whether all invitations have been sent or supply an individual rejection decision.

Neither applicant should infer admission odds from this comparison. The useful result is a clearer understanding of which stage actually exists and which source can communicate the outcome.
