PhD CV and SOP: List Papers Under Review?

You can describe an unfinished publication process without claiming a published paper. Where the application permits it, label the manuscript's actual status, distinguish it from accepted work, and keep that status consistent across your CV, statement and application fields.

What university guidance actually permits

Cornell Entomology's graduate-application instructions allow CV entries marked “in prep” or “under review” when work is not yet published. They also ask for all coauthors' names, with the applicant's name bolded. This is a concrete program example, not permission to enter unfinished work into every school's accepted-publications field.

Vanderbilt's scientific-vita guidance says to separate in-preparation and under-review work from published or in-press work. It also warns against inferring an in-press decision from encouraging reviews or an editorial letter. An explicit decision matters.

The distinction is evidence quality: a completed study, a submitted manuscript and an accepted paper describe different facts. You can explain the research you actually did at each stage.

Check the status before choosing a label

Use this procedure with your supervisor or corresponding author, then follow the application's categories:

Confirm the current title, author order and status before uploading. For pending work, a separate clearly labelled subsection can prevent a reader from confusing it with accepted publications. Never remove coauthors to make your contribution appear larger.

Whether to name a journal for pending work is a convention, not a universal rule. Vanderbilt advises against it while acknowledging differing views. Follow the target's instructions and your field's norms; a prestigious intended venue is not evidence of acceptance.

Worked example: describe the work and its status

GradPilot original example: An applicant designed a preprocessing comparison for a neuroscience study and contributed to a manuscript that has been submitted but not accepted.

An accurate statement sentence could be:

I compared two preprocessing pipelines and traced the apparent group difference to the exclusion rules. I contributed these analyses to a manuscript submitted for publication; it has not yet been accepted.

The CV should give the actual title, collaborators and matching status. The SOP sentence explains an individual research decision rather than substituting the venue's reputation for evidence. Do not use this example unless its facts match your experience; it is not a real applicant excerpt or an outcome claim.

What if the paper is accepted after I apply?

Check the department's rules for new material and the permitted channel. An available upload button does not establish that every update will be considered.
