Can You Add Fall Grades After Applying?

Fall grades can enter some submitted graduate applications. Compare Harvard’s portal, JHU’s departmental request and Berkeley Physics’s cutoff.

Can You Add Fall Grades After Applying?

Submit by the application deadline using the record the program requests; do not assume you can wait for fall grades. After submission, some programs accept updates, some consider requests individually, and others explicitly refuse updated transcripts.

Find the update rule before planning around a grade

Harvard Griffin GSAS permits a submitted application to be updated through the Fall Grade Report in its Applicant Portal. Some programs may require fall grades. It does not accept application transcripts by email or post. Harvard transcript instructions.

Berkeley Physics takes a different position: its current Fall 2027 admissions page says applications will not be updated after the deadline with transcripts showing fall grades. An available letter-upload route does not override the transcript rule. Berkeley Physics admissions.

Johns Hopkins Mechanical Engineering tells applicants to submit their current transcript even when current-semester grades are missing. The department considers other application-update requests individually, although central admissions generally does not accept updates beyond letters and official exam scores. JHU Mechanical Engineering application instructions.

These are program examples, not university-wide permissions to change every application after submission.

Use a three-route update plan

For each application, record the submission deadline, the date your grade will become official and the permitted update channel. Then classify the result:

Published positionYour next action
Portal update availableUse the designated update function and check any program-specific requirement.
Department considers requestsAsk through that department's stated channel; distinguish a request from approval.
Post-deadline transcripts excludedSubmit the required current record and plan on its contents being the academic evidence available.

An update is not a second application. Select the genuinely new academic information, identify what changed and follow the requested format. Sending the same transcript to several offices creates uncertainty about which version, if any, belongs in the file.

For JHU Mechanical Engineering, the published channel for an exceptional update request is the department at me-academic@jhu.edu, with the new item attached; it asks applicants to use this option sparingly. That channel should not be copied into a plan for unrelated departments.

Selecting the wrong target has its own procedure; check correcting a graduate program after submission before starting another file or assuming a portal edit is permitted.

An illustrative January result

Illustrative case: A student applies during December while finishing a fall mathematics course. The official grade will appear in January. The student is comparing applications governed by the three policies above.

The December transcript should accurately show the current record. The student must not report an expected high grade as an achieved result or let the application deadline pass while waiting for it.

When the grade arrives, a Harvard applicant can use the specified Fall Grade Report. A JHU Mechanical Engineering applicant can follow its case-by-case request route. A Berkeley Physics applicant should not send a replacement transcript against the published no-update instruction.

The same achievement therefore has three administrative paths. None establishes how much weight a committee will give the grade. If a course is essential to your preparation, treat the possibility that its result will arrive too late as a real planning constraint.

Keep degree status and statement writing separate

Applying before graduation is another question: the ETH final-year application guide distinguishes unfinished study from missing final certificates.

If a master's application on your list requests a compatible full SOP, use the general master's SOP rubric through graduate statement review. It examines the academic narrative, not transcript processing or whether an update will be reviewed. The graduate application hub provides related guidance.

If you are applying again, verify which graduate application files carry into a new cycle instead of assuming a saved recommendation or transcript completes the new application.

Official sources checked September 11, 2026; Berkeley's example uses its published Fall 2027 admissions instructions.
