Wrong Grad Program: Can I Fix a Submitted App?

Contact the graduate admissions office promptly if you submitted to the wrong program. Some changes can be handled through the office; a different program may require another application. Keep the existing file intact until you receive instructions about the correct process.

Universities distinguish different kinds of changes

Ohio University directs applicants seeking certain modality, same-degree concentration or same-program degree-level changes to the Graduate College. Applying to a different program requires another application through the applicant portal. Its retained transcripts can attach to a new application within one year of the initial submission. Albany tells applicants who have not yet received a decision to contact the Graduate School when requesting a program or entry-term change. That supplies a contact process; it does not guarantee that any requested change will be approved. Albany application instructions.

Our recommendation: describe the exact correction before asking whether your “application can be changed.” A concentration inside one degree and a different degree program may have different administrative routes even if both appear in the same dropdown menu.

Send a precise correction request

First save the submitted application and its confirmation. Then give the designated office these facts:

1. What you submitted: Identify the current program, degree level, delivery format, entry term and application reference through the office's appropriate channel.
2. What you intended: State the exact destination program and which field was selected incorrectly. Avoid abbreviations that could refer to multiple degrees.
3. Where the file stands: Say that it has been submitted and whether a decision has arrived. A pre-decision correction process may not apply after admission or rejection.
4. What needs confirmation: Ask whether the office can change the existing file, whether a new application is required, and what happens to existing supporting materials.

Check the destination's deadline and document requirements immediately. While awaiting a reply, you can prepare missing materials and revise program-specific writing. That useful preparation does not require withdrawing the existing application or creating an unauthorized duplicate.

After the office acts, verify the program and term displayed in the portal and ask about any remaining checklist items. Do not assume that transferring one transcript also transfers recommendations, statements or supplemental questions.

Worked example: a wrong program after payment

Illustrative case: An applicant submits and pays, then notices that the selected degree is different from the master's they intended. They are tempted to cancel the file and start over immediately.

At Ohio, they first determine whether this is a related change covered by the Graduate College process or an application to a different academic program. For the latter, the published instruction calls for a new application. Its transcript-retention provision may help with that document, but does not remove the application step.

At Albany, before an admission decision, the applicant contacts the Graduate School with the correction request. They should wait for the office's instructions about handling the file rather than treating that contact route as automatic permission to change programs.

The correction request should be factual and brief. It need not become a long explanation of admissions anxiety, and it should not claim that an office promised a change before it has done so.
