Online CS Master's: Can You Change Campus?

An online computer-science master's does not automatically let you switch to the same university's campus program. Some programs prohibit transfers; others require a fresh application. Confirm both the admission route and credit recognition before enrolling on the assumption that you can move later.

A shared university name is not a transfer agreement

Penn Engineering says students cannot transfer between its online degree programs and on-campus degree programs. That restriction addresses a transfer route; it does not answer every possible question about a future independent application. Penn Engineering Online FAQ.

ASU's online Master of Computer Science page says an online-to-campus move requires a new application. Its 2025–26 CS/MCS handbook likewise requires MCS Online students seeking another MS or a PhD program to apply again, with admission not guaranteed. The two ASU sources use different credit-transfer limits. Do not budget a campus degree around a numerical cap taken from either page without written clarification for your exact starting and destination programs. The fresh-application rule is consistent; the credit calculation remains a separate question.

Check three steps before making the plan

1. Is the proposed move permitted? Name both degrees and their delivery formats. Ask specifically about online-to-campus movement; an answer about campus-to-online movement or switching between online degrees may concern a different process.
2. What admission process applies? Establish whether there is an internal request, a new competitive application, or no transfer route. Record the target entry term and required application materials.
3. Which completed work would count? Supply course codes, credits and grades. Ask which requirements they could satisfy, which limits apply, and when a formal credit decision can be made.

Our recommendation is to treat any unconfirmed credit recognition as a planning uncertainty, not a saving. Compare the cost and time of the campus program under the written answer you actually receive. If no binding determination is available before admission, keep that uncertainty in your decision.

Also ask whether you would still want the online degree if the campus application failed. If the entire plan depends on a move the institution has not approved, the initial enrollment deserves reconsideration.

Selecting the wrong target has its own procedure; check correcting a graduate program after submission before starting another file or assuming a portal edit is permitted.

Worked example: two online courses, then campus labs

Illustrative case: An applicant wants to start with two online CS courses and later move to campus for a different academic experience. They assume the university name on both programs makes this an administrative change.

At Penn, the published no-transfer rule means they should not build that plan around an online-to-campus transfer. Any question about an independent campus application needs a separate answer from the receiving program.

At ASU, the applicant should plan for a new application and a separate admission decision. They can send the exact proposed course codes and destination degree to the program and request written credit guidance, noting the differing public instructions. Completing the courses does not itself establish either admission or their eventual use toward the campus degree.

The example addresses the enrollment route. Access to a particular laboratory would still require its own confirmation; switching location alone does not establish a research place.
