Can You Apply to Two PhDs at One School?

Sometimes you can apply to two PhD programs at one university; sometimes you must choose one. Check the graduate school's application limit and any narrower school rule before preparing separate applications or paying fees.

The university name does not tell you the rule

Princeton permits one academic degree program for one degree per year. Two plausible research homes do not create permission to submit two doctoral applications. Princeton application rules.

Berkeley permits one graduate or concurrent-degree program per admissions cycle. Its cycle includes summer, fall and spring; submitting for fall and then spring does not create two independent opportunities within that cycle. Harvard Griffin GSAS accepts up to three applications to different degree programs in a single year, each with separate materials and a fee. However, Engineering and Applied Sciences has a narrower rule: two SEAS applications are permitted only when one is for a PhD and one for a master's. These are application permissions, not evidence that applying twice improves your admission chances.

A fallback degree is a separate procedural question; check master’s consideration after a PhD rejection before assuming a doctoral application also requests an MS place.

Count programs before counting applications

Record the university, administering school, degree program and entry cycle for each submission:

1. Find the university-wide limit. Different start terms can share one year or cycle limit.
2. Read the narrower rule. Harvard's general allowance cannot override its SEAS restriction.
3. Identify the application unit. Harvard rejects multiple applications to the same program with different areas of study.
4. Verify each application's materials. Separate statements and recommendations may be required; permission to apply twice does not establish file sharing.

If the public instructions leave your combination unclear, ask admissions about the exact two degree names before submitting. A portal that lets you start another form is insufficient evidence of permission.

Selecting the wrong target has its own procedure; check correcting a graduate program after submission before starting another file or assuming a portal edit is permitted.

Build the application budget around the actual rules for PhD application fee waivers for international applicants, including request timing and what to do while a decision is pending.

Preparation planning also needs a test-by-test check; compare Physics PhD General and Subject GRE requirements for the intended entry year. If you change the entry term, verify whether graduate funding survives an admission deferral and obtain the new commitment instead of carrying the old amount into another calendar.

An illustrative neuroscience decision

Imagine a neuroscience applicant considering two departments for a project connecting neuronal signaling and molecular mechanisms.

With a one-program limit, compare supervision, methods and support for the research question. Choose the stronger training home instead of submitting duplicates.

At Harvard GSAS, two genuinely different eligible programs can fall within the general allowance. The applicant would still need a distinct, credible explanation of fit for each. If the proposed pair is instead two SEAS PhDs, the narrower rule stops that plan.

As an editorial planning test, state what training each program uniquely provides. If only the names differ, investigate further before paying twice.

For a fresh application rather than an existing offer, confirm whether a spring PhD intake is actually open before paying a fee simply because the portal lists spring.

Write for the program you actually select

For an applicant-written draft, the PhD SOP rubric and PhD statement review examine research direction and program fit. Harvard's linked instructions prohibit third-party or generative-AI development of application writing, while allowing help to “suggest minor edits or to identify grammatical errors.” The review product's availability does not change that policy.
