ETH MSc: Can You Apply Before Graduating?

Yes. ETH allows applications before completing the bachelor's, but says you must receive the degree certificate by the start of lectures. Submit the required evidence for your current study status; an unfinished degree and a completed degree awaiting its diploma are different cases.

Application timing and completion timing differ

ETH's international-bachelor application instructions explicitly address applicants whose bachelor's is not finished when they apply. They must ensure the degree certificate will be available by the time lectures begin. Required application documents still need to be submitted on time; permission to apply while studying is not permission to leave the application incomplete.

ETH's general-document guidance distinguishes ongoing study from completed programs whose diploma has not yet been issued. For ongoing study, it requires the transcript and enrolment confirmation. For completed study, it requests the final academic record and degree certificate, accepting a provisional certificate or graduation confirmation at application if the final certificate is not yet issued.

Our recommendation: verify both your academic-completion schedule and your university's document-issuance schedule. They can differ, especially where final results and a graduation ceremony occur in different months.

Use the correct status and evidence

Your actual positionEvidence identified in ETH's guidance
Still completing the degreeCurrent official transcript plus enrolment confirmation showing study dates and expected degree.
Degree completed, final certificate not issuedFinal academic record plus provisional degree certificate or graduation confirmation at application.
Degree completed and certificate issuedFinal academic record and degree certificate.

For enrolment confirmation, ETH specifies personal data, the start and prospective end dates, the program and the expected degree title. Ask the responsible university office for a document that accurately describes your position rather than substituting an informal prediction.

Then make a timeline with four milestones: remaining academic work, final result confirmation, document issuance and ETH's lecture start. Add the application deadline separately. A later enrolment milestone does not automatically move the earlier document-submission deadline.

If the schedule is uncertain, ask your home university when each record can actually be issued. Where ETH's accepted evidence or timing remains unclear, seek clarification from its admissions office before relying on an assumed exception.

An illustrative final-year comparison

Illustrative case, created for this guide: Two Indian applicants do not yet have their final bachelor's certificates. One still has an examination and a required project assessment outstanding. The other has completed all requirements, with final results confirmed, but is waiting for the university to issue the diploma.

The first is still studying and needs evidence appropriate to that status. The second can investigate the provisional-certificate or graduation-confirmation route described for completed study. Both lack the same piece of paper, but the underlying academic facts differ.

Neither should report that the degree is completed merely because classes have ended. Equally, a delayed ceremony does not by itself tell you whether an official provisional document is available. Establish the facts with the university office that issues the records.

If required work or documentation will run beyond ETH's stated timing, do not assume an extension. Clarify the position before building plans around that intake.

Keep other application requirements separate

Your degree status does not settle the language requirement. The ETH English-medium proof guide covers that distinct evidence question.

For a compatible full SOP requested by your target, use the general master's SOP rubric and graduate statement review to examine how clearly you explain academic preparation and fit. Follow the program-specific prompt and limit. Review does not verify degree completion, validate certificates or extend a deadline. The graduate application hub provides related writing guidance.

A course planned for autumn also raises a timing question: check updating fall grades after a graduate application before assuming the final result will enter review.
