ETH MSc: Does English-Medium Study Suffice?

An Indian English-medium bachelor's can satisfy ETH Zurich's English-test exemption conditions, but your assertion is insufficient. Obtain the specified official evidence before the application deadline. A professor's informal confirmation or a test scheduled afterward does not solve the documentation requirement.

The exemption depends on the whole degree

ETH's master's language requirements allow an exemption for a bachelor's program taught entirely in English with appropriate official confirmation. The proof must establish English as the only language of instruction for the entire program. Separate confirmation is not required for bachelor’s degrees from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the US. ETH also lists other exemption categories; use the one that actually applies to you.

An official transcript, enrolment confirmation or diploma supplement can supply that confirmation when it states the required information. Otherwise, ETH specifies confirmation from central university administration, such as the registrar, rather than a professor or teacher, with the required stamp and signature or certified electronic signature.

ETH also says language requirements must be satisfied by the application deadline; missing or invalid proof cannot be repaired by submitting a language certificate afterward. Check the deadline for your actual application route rather than relying on a date from another applicant's cycle.

Our recommendation: treat this as a document-production decision early in your preparation. Before deciding to skip testing, establish that your university can issue acceptable proof in time.

Audit the document, not your confidence in English

Use this four-part check on the actual document you intend to upload:

1. Coverage: Does it refer to the entire bachelor's program, rather than one module, project or final year?
2. Language: Does it establish English as the only instructional language, rather than saying merely that you are proficient in English?
3. Issuer: Is it an accepted official academic document or confirmation from the appropriate central administrative office?
4. Authentication: Does it have the required institutional authentication, and can you obtain the final version before the deadline?

If a statement is ambiguous, ask the issuing office whether it can accurately supply the missing information. Do not ask it to certify an English-only degree if that is not true. For mixed-language study or unusual documents, seek ETH's interpretation and check the recognized test route while time remains.

ETH's general application-document instructions distinguish official academic records from other required evidence, including language proof. They also require relevant documentation for studies still in progress. Possessing a transcript therefore does not settle whether that transcript establishes the language exemption.

If you need a test score, verify the date through which a graduate English score must stay valid before relying on its current availability.

An illustrative deadline problem

Illustrative case, created for this guide: An Indian applicant completed an English-medium bachelor's. A departmental lecturer has emailed that the applicant speaks excellent English, but the registrar has not issued confirmation. The applicant has booked an English test after the ETH application deadline.

The email does not establish the required degree-wide facts through the specified issuer. The later test date does not fix the deadline problem. The useful next action is to determine whether valid administrative confirmation can be issued in time, or whether an accepted test result can be available before the deadline.

Language proof belongs in the document checklist; motivation-statement wording cannot repair it.

Degree timing is separate from language evidence; check applying to ETH before completing your bachelor’s and distinguish unfinished requirements from a diploma awaiting issue.

Score format is another separate check; compare graduate-school acceptance of TOEFL MyBest scores before combining results from different sittings.
