TOEFL Expiry: Application or Enrollment Date?

Your TOEFL does not always need to remain valid until enrollment, but some universities require exactly that. Check the receiving institution's date rule and the ability to deliver an official report. A score usable today may still be too old for your intended start.

Universities anchor validity to different dates

Stanford's published English-test table for Autumn 2027–28 entry lists September 1, 2024 as the earliest valid test date. ASU instead requires the English exam to have been taken no more than two years before the student's start date. A score that will be older by then may require updated testing or another accepted way to demonstrate proficiency. Individual programs can impose higher requirements or restrict accepted tests. Our recommendation: record a date, not just “valid for two years,” beside every university. The phrase is incomplete until you know the event against which those years are measured.

Build a four-date check

For each target, record:

1. Test date: Use the date on the actual report. Do not substitute the date you downloaded it or received a copy.
2. Official-report delivery: Check whether the testing provider can still send the required report and when the university needs it. A stored PDF and an official electronic report are different records.
3. Institution's cutoff: Identify whether the rule specifies application opening, submission, deadline, an explicit earliest test date, or enrollment. Save the relevant entry-year instructions.
4. Intended start: Add the actual term you plan to enter. If the start changes, run the check again rather than carrying forward an earlier conclusion.

Then check the department's test requirements separately. Passing the date check does not establish that the score, test format or other conditions meet the program's requirements.

If the university's table appears to accept a score that may no longer be deliverable when you apply, ask about the reporting problem before the result expires. Do not assume a university's acceptance window extends the testing provider's reporting availability.

Worked example: one test, two different outcomes

Illustrative case: An applicant took TOEFL in October 2024, submits applications in September 2026, and intends to begin graduate study in autumn 2027. They arrange any required official report while it remains available.

The test date is after Stanford's published September 1, 2024 cutoff for Autumn 2027–28. It therefore passes that particular date check, although the applicant still must satisfy the program's other requirements and reporting instructions.

For an autumn 2027 ASU start, the same October 2024 test is more than two years old. Submitting before it reaches two years does not resolve ASU's start-date rule. The applicant should determine whether updated testing or another listed proficiency route applies.

This comparison does not convert scores between TOEFL scales or establish eligibility for either program. It shows why one retake decision cannot safely be copied across the shortlist.
