MBA English Waiver After an English-Taught MS

A completed English-taught master's can remove an MBA English-test requirement at some schools. The result depends on the school's exact rule, whether the degree is complete, and what documentation it requires. It does not automatically waive the GMAT or GRE.

Stanford and Wharton describe different processes

Stanford requires English testing if undergraduate courses were taught partly outside English, excluding foreign-language classes. Its stated exception is a subsequently completed graduate program taught exclusively in English. An English-speaking job is not the graduate-degree exception described by that rule. Wharton's application guide says testing may be waived for applicants who earned a degree at an institution where English was the language of instruction. Its admissions FAQ adds a procedural requirement: include a waiver-request letter and documentation of English-language education in the application. Read the exemption and its documentation together. A degree that appears to meet the academic condition does not make every required application action disappear.

Build a degree-language chronology

Create one line for each completed degree, then a separate line for any program still in progress. Record the institution, award, completion date and language of instruction. Distinguish the language used in your degree from the language used by the country or your employer.

Next, answer three questions for each MBA application:

1. Which education does the rule examine? Some wording refers to undergraduate study; other wording recognizes a later completed degree. Do not stop reading after the bachelor's clause.
2. What does the language condition require? Stanford's graduate-program exception says exclusively English. A program partly taught in English should not silently become an all-English program on your worksheet.
3. What action establishes the exemption? Follow the application's waiver field, requested letter or supporting-document instructions. Keep an unresolved request separate from an approved waiver.

If your transcript does not identify the teaching language, ask what institutional confirmation the program accepts. Do not assume an applicant-written explanation will substitute for required university documentation.

If you need a test score, verify the date through which a graduate English score must stay valid before relying on its current availability.

An illustrative completed-MS exception

Imagine an applicant whose bachelor's included courses taught outside English. They later completed a master's taught entirely in English and are preparing Stanford and Wharton applications.

At Stanford, the completed graduate program is directly relevant to the published exception. The applicant should accurately report the degree and follow the application instructions for establishing that background.

At Wharton, the applicant should prepare the requested waiver letter and evidence of English-language education. They should not merely leave the test field empty because another school describes an exemption differently.

Now change one fact: the master's is still in progress. The applicant no longer has the completed graduate program named in Stanford's exception. They should clarify how their completion timing affects the application instead of assuming expected graduation is identical to a completed qualification.

A second change also matters: if only some master's courses were taught in English, the applicant must preserve that distinction when checking Stanford's exclusively-English condition. Neither an employer reference nor a strong GMAT score changes the wording of that exception.

Keep testing and essays as separate tasks
