TOEFL MyBest: Will Graduate Schools Accept It?

Some graduate schools accept TOEFL MyBest scores, while others require scores from one test sitting. Do not combine section results yourself and assume the total qualifies. Check the university's reporting rules and the department's evaluation requirements separately.

Receiving MyBest does not settle its evaluation

Stanford accepts MyBest, which combines the highest section scores from eligible test dates within the preceding two years. It makes received TOEFL scores, including MyBest, available to the admissions committee; the committee decides how to evaluate them. Stanford TOEFL reporting instructions.

UW–Madison states that it does not accept scores compiled from multiple tests to meet its English-proficiency requirement. A combined report that resolves a weakness on paper therefore does not satisfy that particular instruction. UW–Madison graduate requirements.

Our recommendation: distinguish an accepted report, a satisfied requirement, and an admissions evaluation. A university's willingness to receive MyBest is not a promise that every department will treat it identically or that a qualifying result produces admission.

Audit the report before booking another sitting

Use this sequence:

  1. Identify the official result you have. Keep each test sitting and the testing provider's MyBest report distinct. Do not create a replacement report by copying your highest sections into a new total.
  2. Read the receiving institution's policy. Mark MyBest accepted, not accepted, or unclear. If unclear, ask specifically about MyBest rather than whether the school accepts TOEFL generally.
  3. Check the program's minimums. Record any overall and section requirements and ask how they apply to the permitted report. Avoid treating a university-wide minimum as the full departmental rule.
  4. Follow the self-report instructions. Enter dates and scores using the application's prescribed method. Then arrange the official report where required.

For Stanford, one permitted self-report method uses a single MyBest entry with the report's “as of” date; another lists the contributing TOEFL sittings. Its instructions for IELTS instead prohibit entering a self-created superscore. Permission for one test's reporting method should not be carried over to another test.

Also check score validity separately. A report type can be accepted while the underlying testing falls outside the applicable date window. Do not rely on a test-preparation forum to settle either condition.

Worked example: improvement across two attempts

Illustrative case: An applicant's first sitting meets a target's speaking requirement but misses its overall requirement. Their second improves the overall result but misses the speaking requirement. The provider's MyBest report meets both hypothetical thresholds; neither individual sitting does.

At Stanford, the applicant has an accepted reporting route to investigate, subject to the actual program's standards and committee evaluation. At UW–Madison, combining the two sittings does not meet the published no-combination rule. The applicant must check another accepted basis for proficiency or consider a new test; this example establishes no waiver.

Keeping the case qualitative avoids mixing score scales or suggesting that a particular section combination guarantees success. The decision is whether the receiving program permits the evidence you intend to submit.

Prepare the separate academic essay

Our English-medium evidence guide addresses a different route: documenting an exemption rather than choosing a score report.

When your statement is ready, see the general master's statement rubric and review your master's statement. Explain academic preparation and purpose there; the review does not determine test eligibility. The graduate essays hub has related application guidance.
