Polytechnique MSc&T Statement of Purpose: 700 Words

École Polytechnique's MSc&T FAQ answers "How long should my statement of purpose be?" with "Minimum: approx. 700 words". You write it on a Personal Statement form that you download from the application platform. Round 2 closes 11 January 2027 at 11.59 AM (CET), and only rounds 1 and 2 can apply for a scholarship.

That is a minimum, not a cap, and it is the opposite of most European letters. A 500-word letter written for a one-page school, the format covered in the ETH Zurich and EPFL one-page motivation letter guide, is under the length Polytechnique asks for if you send it here unchanged. The other trap is the clock: the deadline is 11.59 in the morning, not at midnight. If you are drafting now, the UK and European master's motivation letter rubric reads a statement of this length for programme fit, evidence and future direction.

Every Polytechnique page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. They cover the Master of Science and Technology (MSc&T) programmes for the 2027 intake. The deadlines page says "APPLICATIONS for the 2027 intake will open on September 16th, 2026". Round 1 closed on 12 October 2026.

A minimum, on a form

The MSc&T FAQ gives the whole rule in two lines:

"How long should my statement of purpose be? Minimum: approx. 700 words Please fill out the Personal Statement form (you will be able to download it on the Application Platform)."

What the page does not say: a maximum, the form's questions, or whether the form has fields or one box. The form sits behind an account, and we did not open it. So keep three things apart:

What it covers
PublishedA minimum of "approx. 700 words"; the Personal Statement form from the platform
Our recommendation750 to 900 words, so "approx." never works against you
UnknownA maximum; the form's prompts or fields

Our view: write 750 to 900 words. "Approx." means a 690-word statement may be fine, but nothing on the page says so, and you gain nothing by testing it. The countercase: if the downloaded form shows its own prompts or a field limit, the form wins over this page. Answer its questions in its order, and use the word budget below only to fill them.

Rounds and the scholarship cut-off

From the MSc&T application deadlines and procedure page:

212 October 2026 – 11 January 2027, 11.59 AM (CET)Mid-to-late February 2027Early March 2027
311 January – 8 March 2027, 11.59 AM (CET)Mid-April 2027Early May 2027
48 March – 13 April 2027, 11.59 AM (CET)Late May 2027Early June 2027

The rules under the table:

  • "Please note that only students who apply in the first and second rounds of admissions can apply for a scholarship."
  • "The applicants selected by the admissibility jury will be invited to an interview conducted by academic directors and admission staff."
  • "Kindly note that you can only apply for each program once per year." You may apply to a different programme, and the FAQ adds that you "must pay an application fee for each application submitted."
  • "The application processing fee for Masters of Science and Technology is 95 euros." It is non-refundable.
  • "Please note that we do not offer spring term admission."
  • Two programmes run with HEC Paris, Data Science and AI for Business and the Data & Finance double degree, are "handled exclusively by HEC Paris". This page does not cover them.

What 11.59 AM means where you are (our arithmetic): CET is UTC+1 in January. So the Round 2 deadline is 4.29 PM in India (UTC+5:30), 6.59 PM in China (UTC+8), and 5.59 AM in New York (UTC−5) on 11 January 2027, a Monday.

Our view: if you need a scholarship, treat 11 January 2027 as your only remaining deadline, and plan to submit on 10 January. Rounds 3 and 4 still admit students, but the page bars them from scholarships. The countercase: if you are self-funded and your English test result or final grades will be stronger by March, Round 3 lets you apply once with the better file. You can apply to each programme only once a year, so use that one chance well.

Filling 700 words without padding

A one-page letter has room for a reason and a goal. Seven hundred words gives you room for the reasoning behind them. Spend the extra words on three things the short letter leaves out.

  1. One project in depth. What the problem was, what you did yourself, what method you used, what the result was, and what did not work. A full paragraph of 150 to 200 words on one project beats one line each on four.
  2. The programme's structure. The FAQ says "The academic year consists of three terms: the first term runs from September to December, the second term from January to March, and the third term focuses on internships." Say what you want from each, and especially what kind of internship the third term should be.
  3. A career plan with a first step. A first job title and sector, and why the specialization gets you there.

A budget that adds up to 800 words (our arithmetic):

PartWords
Opening: the specialization's name and your goal80
Academic preparation: courses and grades that matter here200
One project in depth200
Why this specialization: courses and the three-term structure150
Career plan, including the internship term120
Closing50

Two practical rules from the FAQ belong in your plan. Referees: "It is your responsibility to tell your referees about the deadline and make sure they fill out the form in time." If your referees write US-style letters, European vs American recommendation letters covers the differences. And French: "There is no required minimum level in French to be able to apply, but depending on your level (less than B2 according to the CEFRL), you will have to take French classes during the year." If your French is below B2, one sentence on how you will handle those classes is useful. It does not need a paragraph.

Constructed outline and excerpt

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Wei Zhang studied electronic engineering and built a soil-moisture sensor network for his final-year project. He applies to the MSc&T in Internet of Things: Innovation and Management (IoT), one of the specializations listed on Polytechnique's MSc&T pages. Bracketed text marks facts he must take from the programme page himself.

The outline, mapped to the budget above:

  1. Opening (80): the IoT specialization by name; the goal of building low-power sensor products for farms.
  2. Preparation (200): embedded systems and signal processing courses, with grades; one microcontroller course project.
  3. Project (200): expanded below.
  4. Why this specialization (150): [two named courses]; the management side the degree lacked; the three-term structure.
  5. Plan (120): a third-term internship at a sensor hardware company, then a product engineering role.
  6. Closing (50): what he will bring to group projects.

The weak project paragraph (32 words):

For my final-year project I built an IoT system for agriculture using sensors and wireless communication. It was a great learning experience and it improved my technical and teamwork skills a lot.

The revised project paragraph (110 words):

My final-year project was a network of 12 soil-moisture sensors for a 2-hectare university farm plot. I designed the sensor boards and wrote the firmware; two teammates built the dashboard. The first version drained its batteries in nine days, because each node sent a reading every minute. I changed the nodes to sleep between readings and send only when moisture moved by more than 3%, which stretched battery life to 47 days. What I could not solve was cost: each node cost more than the farm would pay. That gap is why I am applying to a specialization that teaches the business side of IoT products, not only the engineering.

Why the revision works: it separates what he did from what the team did. It gives a method, a measured result and a limit. And the limit leads straight into "why this specialization", so the project paragraph does two jobs. That is how 700 words fill up without padding.

Before you submit to Polytechnique

  1. The statement is at least about 700 words, and 750 to 900 by your own count.
  2. You have downloaded the Personal Statement form and answered any prompts it shows.
  3. It names the MSc&T specialization, not only "Polytechnique".
  4. One project is told in depth, with your part, the method, the result and the limit.
  5. It says what you want from each of the three terms, including the internship.
  6. Your referees know the deadline and the time: 11.59 AM CET.
  7. If you need a scholarship, you are applying in Round 2 at the latest.
