SOP When War or Crisis Interrupted Your Degree
Studies interrupted by war, displacement or an economic crisis? One dated SOP paragraph does it. Missing records go to admissions: 6 university policies.
SOP When War or Crisis Interrupted Your Degree
If a war, displacement or an economic crisis interrupted your degree, explain it in your statement of purpose (SOP) in one dated paragraph of three or four sentences: what happened, when, how your studies continued, and what you did with the time. Missing transcripts are not an SOP topic. They go to the admissions office through its own channel.
It is tempting to treat this paragraph as a chance to tell your story. Our view is narrower. The reader of a graduate SOP has one practical question: is this record complete, and is this applicant ready now? A dated, factual paragraph that ends on your work answers it. Testimony beyond that belongs in a second statement, and only where the program asks for one. UK universities call the document a personal statement; the same rule applies. When your draft is ready, open the graduate SOP review and choose the general MS SOP rubric.
This page is the graduate version of our guide to a college essay about war or crisis in your country. If a strike or a session backlog only made your degree longer, the shorter rule in degree took longer than four years is enough. Every university page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. Some were written in 2022 and may have changed since, so we date each row.
What the reader needs: dates, status, documents
A disrupted degree raises four questions the transcript cannot answer. Answer each one with a fact, not an adjective.
| The reader's question | What you state | What you leave out |
|---|---|---|
| When did it happen? | Month and year of each change | A history of the conflict or the crisis |
| How did your studies continue? | In person, online, transferred, suspended, or part-time | Who was to blame |
| Is the degree finished? | Completed, or the expected completion date | Hopes about when things will improve |
| What did you do with the time? | A job, a project, a course, a skill | "I never gave up" |
Published requirement, our recommendation and unknown are different things here. The universities below publish how they handle missing documents. None of the pages we checked says how an interrupted record is weighed in the admission decision. That part is unknown, so do not write as if your paragraph can change the weighting. It can only make your record readable.
Missing or delayed documents: what six universities publish
These are the document routes, quoted from each university. Read them as examples of how to ask, not as rules at your program.
| University | Scope and date | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Imperial College London | Applicants in situations of displacement; no year stated | "If official transcripts or degree certificates are unavailable or indefinitely delayed, we may be able to accept confirmation directly from your awarding institution." Cases without documents "may be reviewed by an Admissions Panel" |
| University of Bristol | Undergraduate and postgraduate taught; 2027/28 cycle onward | Accepts alternative evidence such as "Partial academic records" and "Highly Likely to Complete letters from the awarding institution"; applicants "must complete and submit the displaced applicant form" |
| Technical University of Munich | Applicants who fled Ukraine; no year stated | Upload every document you have, even if incomplete; without a transcript of records, prove your coursework "in anderer Form" (in another form) |
| University of Groningen | FAQ in its 2022 news archive; the version we retrieved is in Dutch | At application you may send an unofficial document, "zoals een screenshot van je cijferlijst" (such as a screenshot of your grade list) |
| University of Central Florida | Graduate FAQ; no year stated | "Applicants are able to be admitted using unofficial transcripts." |
| Wayne State University | Displaced students from Ukraine; news item of March 25, 2022 | "displaced students will not be required to submit official transcripts or documents at this time." |
The TUM and Groningen translations are ours. The full German sentence is: "Wenn Sie bereits in der Ukraine studiert haben aber kein Transcript of Records vorweisen können, dann belegen Sie bitte Ihre Studienleistungen in anderer Form."
Two things follow. First, every route runs outside the SOP: a form, an enquiry, a letter from your university. Imperial even names the enquiry category to choose, "Students in Situations of displacement". Second, the routes differ by university, so you have to ask each program yourself. Do not tell one school that another school's rule applies to it.
If your records exist but are not in English, our page on translating graduate transcripts yourself covers who may translate them.
Our view: keep documents out of the SOP entirely when the program has a form or an enquiry route. The countercase: if you are applying with partial records and the application has no other field, add one sentence: which records are missing, why, and what you have sent instead.
The paragraph formula
Write it in this order: when + what changed for your studies + how you continued + what you did that bears on the program.
End on the last part, so the paragraph's final sentence is about your work, not the war.
You also decide how much to disclose. Imperial's page tells displaced applicants: "You do not need to provide detailed personal information unless you feel comfortable doing so." That is a sensible line for an SOP too. Your family's location, your route out and your legal status are not needed to read your transcript.
Constructed example: engineering studies moved online during the war
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Taras Melnyk studied mechanical engineering at a university in Kharkiv. From his third year he studied online from Lviv, and he is applying for an MS in mechanical engineering.
The weak version (78 words):
The war changed everything in my life. When the invasion began, my city was under constant attack and my family had to flee, leaving everything behind. It was the hardest time of my life, and I saw things no student should ever see. Despite the terrible conditions, I never gave up on my education and continued studying with all my strength. This experience made me resilient and taught me that nothing can stop me from reaching my dreams.
The revised version (83 words):
In March 2022 I moved to Lviv, and I completed my third and fourth years online while my university's Kharkiv campus was closed. Laboratory courses were replaced by simulation assignments, so I taught myself finite-element analysis in open-source software to complete them. I graduated in June 2024. Since then I have worked as a design engineer at a Lviv firm that repairs damaged bridges, where I model load paths for temporary supports. That work is why I want your program's structural dynamics courses.
The weak version gives no dates, no study mode and no outcome; a reader cannot tell whether the degree is finished. The revised version answers all four questions in the table and ends on a job and a course. It is also calmer, and that makes it easier to believe.
Economic crises: work, part-time terms and closures
An economic crisis can leave a different mark on a transcript: lower grades in some terms, a part-time load, or a semester off while you worked. The same formula applies, with one change. Give the work a number the reader can picture, such as hours a week and the months it lasted, and show the terms after it.
Constructed example: working full time through a crisis
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Valentina Soria studied industrial engineering in Argentina. When her family's shop closed in 2023, she worked 30 hours a week for a year, and her grades fell in two terms.
The weak version (51 words):
The crisis in my country destroyed my family's savings. Like everyone around us, we struggled to survive, and I had to work instead of focusing on my studies. My grades suffered, but this was not my fault. The crisis was caused by bad government decisions that hurt ordinary people like me.
The revised version (63 words):
From March 2023 to March 2024 I worked 30 hours a week as a warehouse scheduler after my family's shop closed, and my grades fell in those two terms. I went back to full-time study in 2024 and averaged 8.6 in my last three terms. The scheduling job also gave me my thesis topic: reducing idle truck time at a regional distribution center.
The weak version spends its words on national politics and blame, and asks the reader to accept a claim about everyone around her. The revised version dates the work, names the effect on grades, shows the recovery and turns the job into the thesis. Use your own grade scale and your own terms; the 8.6 here is invented.
Where the rest of the story goes
Some programs ask for a second statement about your background. UC Berkeley's application requirements ask for a Statement of Purpose and a Personal History statement, which "describes how your own background and life experiences influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree." Duke's Graduate School asks every applicant for a Life Experiences Statement of no more than one page single spaced, which "highlights the unique life experiences that have shaped your personal and professional identity and prepared you for graduate work."
If your program asks for a statement like these, that is where the fuller account goes, and the SOP keeps its one paragraph. Our wave guides to the SOP versus the personal history statement and to the personal history statement for international students show how to split the material.
Our view: if the program asks for no such statement, do not add one, and do not stretch the SOP paragraph to make up for it. The countercase: if your field is about the crisis, such as reconstruction engineering or humanitarian logistics, the experience can open your SOP as the reason for the degree. The same discipline applies: dates, facts and your own work.
If the interruption came after your degree, a gap rather than a broken degree, see how to explain a gap year in your SOP.
Check your paragraph
- Every change has a month and year.
- The study mode is stated: in person, online, transferred, suspended or part-time.
- The degree's status is stated: completed, or the expected date.
- The last sentence is about your work, a skill or the program.
- There is no politics, no blame and no claim about other people's experience.
- Nothing about missing documents is in the SOP if the program has a form or enquiry route for it.
- Anything longer is in a second statement that the program actually asks for.
Questions about a war or crisis interruption
Do I have to mention the war in my SOP?
Only if it shows on your record. If your dates, grades or study mode changed, one paragraph helps the reader read them. If nothing on your transcript changed, you do not need to mention it.
Should I write about what I lived through?
You choose. The SOP needs dates and effects, not testimony. If the program asks for a personal history or life experiences statement, the fuller account can go there.
My university cannot issue an official transcript. What do I do?
Ask each program's admissions office before the deadline. The six universities above handle it in different ways, from accepting unofficial records to panel review, and your program may have its own route.
Will online semesters or an interruption hurt my application?
No university page we checked says how it weighs them. What you control is whether the reader can understand your record, and the paragraph formula does that. If your question is how to state a Ukrainian average, see Polish, Romanian, Ukrainian grades for grad school.

Get a free Quick Review of your statement of purpose against GradPilot's general MS statement of purpose rubric. It reads whether your statement explains your academic interests, preparation and goals, and whether your experiences support your plans. If your program also asks for a background statement, the personal history statement rubric reads whether each part of your context connects to a choice you made and to your readiness for graduate study.
