Transfer Application Deadlines Fall 2027: 9 Schools

Fall 2027 transfer applications at the nine schools below are due between February 1 and March 15, except Columbia General Studies (rolling cycles from January 15 to May 15) and arts programs at USC and Michigan, due December 1 (USC prints the year: 2026). Most of these schools also set a second date for materials, midterm grades or course requirements.

That second date is the one to plan around. The application deadline is a form you control. The second date depends on a registrar, an instructor or a course you have not finished yet, and it lands in the middle of your spring semester. Cornell wants all other materials by April 15. UT wants supplemental materials by March 10. Georgia Tech wants every required course finished by May 30. Before you draft, check what each school asks you to write in our guide to the Common App transfer essay prompt and limits.

Every page below was checked on October 30, 2026. Only USC prints the year on its transfer dates. The other pages give a month and day without a year; for fall 2027 entry those dates fall in 2027 (our reading of each page, not a date the school printed). Recheck every date in the application before you rely on it.

Sources, all checked October 30, 2026: Michigan requirements and deadlines, USC transfer students, UNC transfer students, UT Austin transfer admission, Georgia Tech deadlines and fees, Columbia transfer applicants, Parsons how to apply, Cornell transfer applicants and GS admissions deadlines and decisions.

Two dates on this list disagree with their own neighbors. Georgia Tech's deadlines table says the fall application is available "January 18 – March 1", while its requirements page says "the fall application opens Jan. 15". Columbia says its dates "are based on typical admissions cycles and specific dates may vary in a particular year." Treat both as reasons to check again in January.

We also tried the transfer pages for UVA and NYU. Both returned a bot check to our requests on October 30, 2026, and the archived copies we found predate the fall 2027 cycle, so neither school is in the table.

The second date is where transfer files stall

The second dates share three features. They fall in March, April or May. They need someone else to act. And several need grades you do not have yet.

  • Cornell, April 15. "All other required materials" includes the College Report, which "confirms that an applicant is in good academic and disciplinary standing", and the Mid-Term Report. Cornell says not to submit the Mid-Term Report "until you have an official or estimated grade in each class you're taking for the spring." If you cannot give a grade, "you must provide a written explanation".
  • Georgia Tech, May 30. "All Applicants have until May 30 to complete course requirements by major and submit an official transcript." The same page says competitive applicants, "especially for the College of Computing and College of Engineering", will have those courses complete by that date. A spring course you drop can leave you short.
  • Columbia College, April 15. "A curriculum report with grades listed as 'in progress' or with no grades listed will not meet this requirement."
  • UT Austin, March 10 and UNC, March 15. Nine to 28 days after the application deadline. Short, but at least before midterms.

Our view: treat the second date as the real deadline and the application date as a checkpoint. Ask your registrar in January how long a College Report or official transcript takes. Ask instructors in February when midterm grades post. Put the course-requirement date on your calendar the day you register for spring.

The countercase: Columbia College says it "will accept supporting documentation from schools, including recommendation letters and curriculum reports, after the deadline without the need to request an extension", and Michigan does not require its college report or midyear report unless it asks. At those two, the application date really is the one that matters most.

December deadlines for arts transfer applicants

Portfolio and audition applicants work to an earlier clock:

  • USC: "December 1 is the final deadline for transfer students applying to" the School of Cinematic Arts BFA programs, the Kaufman School of Dance, the School of Dramatic Arts BFA programs and the Thornton School of Music. December 1, 2026 is a Tuesday, 32 days after we checked the page (our arithmetic).
  • Michigan: "Application Deadline for School of Music, Theatre & Dance Students Only" is Dec 1. The page gives no year.
  • Cornell: the portfolio or design supplement is due with the application on March 15, not with the April 15 materials.
  • Parsons: "we urge all students to submit their portfolio as soon as possible after receiving the link to do so." Parsons also says you "may not make changes to your portfolio once submitted."

If you are writing an artist statement or piece descriptions for one of these, the artist statement for a college portfolio guide shows what each art school actually asks you to write.

Who writes for you, and by when

Transfer recommendations work differently from first-year ones. Several schools want a college instructor, and some want nothing unless they ask:

SchoolRecommendationsOther forms from your college
CornellAcademic Evaluation from an instructor who taught you "in a full-credit college course"; a personal or employer letter if you have been out of school two or more yearsCollege Report; Mid-Term Report
Columbia College and EngineeringTwo, from "college professors who have taught you in a college course"; optional third from an advising dean or adviserTransfer Report; Curriculum Report
Columbia General StudiesTwo, "from academic and/or professional sources"None listed
UNC-Chapel HillOneNone listed
ParsonsOne, "from a professor with whom they have studied"None listed
UT AustinUp to two; "not required but are encouraged"None listed
USC"Not required unless specifically requested by your intended academic department or major"None listed
MichiganNot required unless requestedCollege report and midyear report, only if requested

Georgia Tech's requirements page lists no recommendation. Columbia adds that letters "should not come from high school teachers, employers, research supervisors or family members." The transfer College Report, Mid-Term Report and recommendations guide covers how those forms are filled in.

Spring 2027 entry: mostly closed

If you hoped to transfer for spring 2027, most published windows at these schools have passed:

SchoolSpring deadline on the pageStatus on October 30, 2026
UT AustinSep 1 (supplemental Sep 8)Passed
Georgia TechApplication available Aug 1 to Sep 15Passed; decisions listed for Oct 30
MichiganWinter term: Oct 1Passed
Columbia General StudiesSep 1, Oct 1, Nov 1Regular Decision Nov 1 still ahead
Parsons"Extended to November 1"Still ahead, but transfers placed as first-semester sophomores "cannot begin in the spring"
Cornell, Columbia CollegeFall onlyNot offered

Cornell says "Transfer applications are considered for the fall semester only." Columbia's FAQ answers "May I transfer for the spring semester?" with "No."

Month-by-month plan for a fall 2027 transfer

These dates come from the tables above. Dates without a printed year are read as 2027 (our reading).

  1. November 2026. Build your list. Open each school's application and copy every essay prompt and limit. Ask your instructors for letters now. Arts applicants: finish the USC or Michigan Music, Theatre and Dance application for December 1.
  2. December 2026. Draft your reasons-and-goals essay. Request any foreign credit evaluation Georgia Tech needs for courses taken abroad.
  3. January 2027. Check that fall grades are posted. USC says: "We need to review your most recent fall-term grades, so be sure your current school has posted them before transcripts are sent." General Studies Priority Early Action is January 15.
  4. February 2027. Michigan on February 1. USC and UNC on February 15.
  5. March 2027. UT, Georgia Tech, Columbia, Parsons and GS Early Action on March 1. UT supplemental materials March 10. Cornell and UNC supporting materials March 15. Georgia Tech documents March 16.
  6. April 2027. Cornell materials and Columbia's curriculum report by April 15. Send midterm grades as soon as they post.
  7. May 2027. Georgia Tech course requirements and transcript by May 30. GS Regular Decision May 15.
  8. June and July 2027. Decisions from UT (June 30), Columbia (by June 1) and USC (end of May, or mid-July if spring grades were requested).

Questions about fall 2027 transfer deadlines

When are transfer applications due for fall 2027?

At the nine schools we checked, between February 1 (Michigan) and March 15 (Cornell). Columbia General Studies runs rolling cycles from January 15 to May 15. USC arts programs are due December 1, 2026, and Michigan's Music, Theatre and Dance applicants also face a December 1 deadline.

Is the Common App transfer deadline the same for every school?

No. Common App for transfer has no single deadline. Each college sets its own, and Columbia College does not use Common App for transfer at all.

Can I submit transfer materials after the deadline?

Sometimes. Cornell's materials are due April 15, a month after the application. Columbia College accepts school documents after March 1 without an extension request. Georgia Tech gives course requirements until May 30.

Do I need my spring grades before I apply?

No, but several schools ask for them later. Cornell's Mid-Term Report and Columbia's curriculum report need midterm grades, and USC may request spring grades before deciding. Cornell's March 15 application includes a college-specific supplement; the prompts are in our Cornell transfer essays guide.

Michigan's February 1 application carries three character-limited essays; the prompts are in our Michigan transfer essays guide.

UT Austin's one required transfer essay is decoded in UT Austin transfer essay (Topic A).

If you will transfer from a university abroad, Cornell's March 15 aid date is final for international students; see the essay and rules for a transfer from a university abroad.
