Choose a question within TUM Informatics’ published topics that you can examine with scientific evidence in approximately 1,000 words. Prefer a bounded argument you understand over a sweeping survey. Keep the essay separate from your personal statement of reasons.
Finding the topic list is only the first step. An umbrella subject can accommodate many different questions, and choosing one does not yet establish what your essay will argue or what evidence it needs.

Find the current task before choosing a subject
TUM’s Informatics programme page, checked September 16, 2026, publishes the topics in its scientific-essay section. Its current list ranges across AI, social networks, data platforms, machine thinking and digitalization. Check that list for your intended application rather than treating a former applicant’s topic as current authorization.
The requested essay is approximately 1,000 words in English, with an introduction, discussion and reasoned conclusion supported by scientific literature and relevant data. Sources belong at the end. The separate statement of reasons is an English document of at most two DIN-A4 pages about your qualification, commitment and connection to the programme.
A historical Informatics applicant’s question illustrates the discovery problem: they could not locate the prescribed topics. Replies speculating about when topics might change are not official instructions. Use the programme page itself as your starting point.
Choose the question you can examine, not the grandest theme
Our recommendation is to make a short planning note for two plausible questions before committing. This is a decision exercise, not TUM’s scoring system and not a formula for admission.
Each note should answer four questions:
- Which published umbrella topic does this question belong to?
- What precise relationship, choice or disputed claim would I examine?
- Which scientific sources do I understand well enough to use accurately?
- What finding or objection could make my initial conclusion narrower?
A question is not ready merely because it sounds technical. If the title names several technologies, three social outcomes and a prediction about the future, you may have chosen a literature-survey project rather than a short essay question.
The better option is often the one for which you can state a boundary without losing the point. “Under these conditions” can be a useful beginning to an argument. “In every setting” creates a much larger evidentiary burden.
Do not narrow by simply adding a country, industry or fashionable application to a broad title. The boundary should change what evidence you need and what conclusion you could responsibly reach.
Two constructed scope choices
Imagine an applicant interested in the published theme concerning data platforms. These are original hypothetical planning cases, not recommended conclusions or submission-ready essay content.
Choice A: compare every major platform feature. The applicant proposes to discuss storage, processing, cost, security, usability and organizational adoption across several kinds of platform. Their outline is a list of categories, each requiring definitions and a separate body of evidence.
That scope would leave little room to assess anything. Shortening each category to two sentences would make the document briefer but would not give it an argument. We would reject this plan unless the applicant can identify one consequential comparison within it.
Choice B: examine one tradeoff under a stated workload. The applicant considers row-oriented versus column-oriented storage for repeated aggregation queries over a dataset receiving new records. Their question is how the comparison changes when query response time and the delay before new records become available both matter. This identifies two approaches and observable conditions without claiming which performs better. Their reading must establish whether published evaluations can support that particular comparison.
This is a more manageable starting point because the evidence can bear on a defined question. It is still only a starting point. The applicant must verify that suitable scientific sources exist, understand their assumptions and decide what position those sources support. Naming a workload does not establish a technical result.
The second plan may also fail. Perhaps the available studies use incompatible conditions, or the applicant cannot yet explain the methods. In that case, change the question or choose another topic. Do not cover a lack of understanding with more technical vocabulary.
A useful final scope test is to describe what the essay will deliberately leave outside its argument. If every exclusion destroys the proposed conclusion, the conclusion is probably larger than the evidence can support.
Build a reading ledger before an outline
A list of references is not yet a basis for an argument. For each potentially useful source, record what it actually establishes and the limits on using it.

This ledger is our planning method. It is not an additional TUM attachment. Its purpose is to prevent references from becoming decorations added after the argument has already been written.
For example, a hypothetical source might compare two approaches on a fixed dataset. The applicant should record that boundary rather than citing the paper as proof that one approach is superior in every environment. Another source may discuss a broader tradeoff without testing the same comparison. Both could be useful, but they do different evidentiary work.
Read enough of a source to understand the claim you intend to make from it. An abstract, promotional summary or another writer’s citation may help you find relevant work; it does not automatically give you the context needed to describe its result accurately.
If the most interesting paper contradicts the conclusion you wanted, keep it in the ledger. That disagreement may improve the essay by exposing the condition under which your original view needs to change.
Make room for reasoning, not just definitions
Once the evidence is understood, sketch the argument in plain sentences. State the question, the position you can support, the main reason, a serious limitation and the conclusion that remains after considering it.
Then ask which background the reader actually needs. A short definition may be necessary to distinguish the approaches being compared. A long history of the field may be interesting without advancing this particular argument.
For a constructed allocation exercise, suppose an outline spends nearly half its space introducing technology and only its final paragraph comparing evidence. We would cut background until the comparison becomes the centre of the essay. Adding citations to the introduction alone would not resolve the imbalance.
An objection should change something: the scope of the claim, the circumstances in which it applies, or the confidence of the conclusion. A token paragraph acknowledging that disadvantages exist is less useful than a specific limitation that the reasoning actually confronts.
You do not have to pretend that a short application essay resolves the whole subject. A limited conclusion can be substantive if the route to it is clear. The goal of this planning process is an argument you can defend, not the strongest-sounding sentence you can place at the end.
References, word counts and a different university’s task
Keep source details as you read so that every borrowed claim can be traced back accurately. Do not invent a minimum number of papers or assume that more citations necessarily strengthen the work. Several references making the same peripheral point may contribute less than one source you analyze carefully.
The programme page does not state a bibliography-count exemption or a required citation style. Do not treat “approximately” as permission for a substantially longer essay. If a counting ambiguity materially affects your submission, seek a precise clarification rather than importing another programme’s convention.
This is also different from selecting an existing academic paper for a university that requests a writing sample. Keep authorship and the personal case distinct
TUM’s linked programme page requires the essay and statement of reasons to be your own work, written “without any assistance,” and reserves authorship and unauthorized-tool checks.
