UC Application vs Common App: What Changes
UC is not on the Common App. Compare essays, letters, tests, fees, deadlines and early decision, and what Common App applicants must change for UC.
UC Application vs Common App: What Changes
The University of California is not on the Common App. It uses its own application, filed October 1 to November 30, 2026 for fall 2027. It asks for 4 of 8 personal insight questions at 350 words each. It takes no letters, no SAT or ACT, no counselor report and no transcript at the start, and it has no early decision.
Our view: the UC application removes the parts of the Common App you are leaning on. Letters, the counselor's school report, test scores and an early round are all gone. A Common App applicant who treats UC as "four short supplements" under-builds the only evidence UC reads: self-reported grades, the activities list and four PIQs. When your PIQs are drafted, a UC personal insight question review checks each one against its question.
Every UC, Berkeley, USC and Common App page quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. This page covers the mechanics. For how the writing differs, see UC PIQs vs Common App essays.
UC application vs Common App, side by side
The Common App column describes the platform. Each member college sets its own deadlines, fees, test policy and letter rules, so we use USC, a large California private university on the Common App, as the worked example.
| UC application | Common App | |
|---|---|---|
| Writing | 4 of 8 PIQs, "a maximum of 350 words" each | One personal essay from 7 prompts, which "remain the same" for 2026–2027, plus each college's own questions |
| Letters | "UC does not require (nor read) letters of recommendation at the time of application" | "Many colleges ask you to include letters of recommendation" |
| School report | None | Counselors "submit several different forms, including your transcript" |
| Grades | You self-report from your transcript | Your school sends the transcript |
| SAT/ACT | "UC will not consider SAT or ACT test scores when making admissions decisions" | College by college; USC accepts them from "students who submit test scores" |
| Activities | Six categories, from "Award or honor" to "Work Experience" | Renamed "Activities and experiences" for 2026–2027 |
| Fee | "$80 for each UC campus ($95 for international and non-immigrant applicants)" | Set by each college |
| Deadline | November 30 | College by college; USC: November 1 (early), January 10 (most majors) |
| Early rounds | None | Many colleges; USC has binding Early Decision and Early Action |
| Decisions | March 1–31; "Some campuses may release decisions prior to March" | USC early decision: "by mid-December" |
Sources for each row: UC's apply page, filling-out page, PIQ page and dates page; Common App's 2026–2027 essay prompts, 2026–2027 update deck and recommendation handout; USC's first-year page.
Two rows need a footnote. UC's fee page for international applicants says "international students enrolled in a U.S. institution may qualify for the $80 application fee." UC fee waivers cover "up to four campuses" and are only "for United States citizens, permanent residents, and applicants eligible for AB540 benefits." And UC's test rule has an odd tail: "SAT and ACT scores may only be reported in your application post-submission." They may be used for eligibility or course placement, not for admission decisions.
What a Common App applicant must change for UC
- Write four answers, not one essay. No Common App essay transfers as is. Each PIQ answers its own question in 350 words or fewer.
- Put your context in the application. No counselor will describe your school. Use the additional comments field, which UC says "shouldn't be an essay, but rather a place to note unusual circumstances or anything that might be unclear in other parts of the application."
- Enter every grade yourself. UC asks you to "report all of your schools, courses and grades exactly as they would appear on official transcripts." Berkeley says that if you are admitted and enroll, "the official transcripts are checked against what the student reported in the application."
- Re-sort your activities. UC's list uses its own six categories, including "Educational preparation programs" and "Other coursework." Our activities list examples show the Common App version.
- Drop the test-score plan. A strong SAT does nothing for a UC admission decision.
Do you need a Common App essay if UC is your only list?
No. UC never sees a Common App essay. If every school on your list uses the UC application, you write four PIQs and no Common App personal essay. You can reuse a story, but not the text: the writing comparison explains why a Common App opening wastes PIQ space.
Early decision elsewhere and UC
UC's review page says "campuses do not consider where you've applied or your admission status to other campuses." UC has no early round, so there is nothing at UC for an early decision application to conflict with. Berkeley's dates page puts it plainly: "UC Berkeley does not offer applications for early admission or early decision."
The binding rules come from the other school. USC's page:
ED is binding. Students may not apply ED to any other college or university and, if admitted, must enroll at USC and withdraw any outstanding applications to other schools.
USC early decision applicants hear "by mid-December." Your UC application was due November 30. So an early decision admit elsewhere means withdrawing a UC application you already paid for. UC says "you are expected to pay for all your campus choices, even if you cancel your application at a later date. The application fees are non-refundable."
Our recommendation: submit UC by November 30 anyway. If the early school defers or denies you in December, the UC deadline has already passed. If it admits you, follow its agreement and withdraw. The countercase: if the UC fees would strain your family's budget, apply to fewer UC campuses rather than skipping UC; fee waivers cover up to four. International applicants weighing early rounds should read early decision for international students.
One application, every campus
UC's filling-out page calls it "just one application" and warns: "Submit only one application per term… Duplicate applications will be canceled." You pick campuses and a major for each campus inside it, but there is one PIQ section. The same four answers go to every campus you choose. Write them for any UC reader, not for one campus.
A few programs add campus forms after you submit. Examples are UCLA's arts, music, film and theater majors (see UC arts supplemental deadlines) and three Berkeley Haas business programs. Letters work the same way: UC says "A campus may ask for them later as part of a supplemental review." Our page on whether UC requires letters of recommendation covers who gets asked.
After you submit
A submitted UC application is mostly frozen. UC's filling-out page says "very few changes can be made after submission." Berkeley's applicant checklist is specific. You may update "your email address, telephone numbers, mailing addresses, or exam scores," but "No changes to academic information, extracurriculars, and personal insight questions will be accepted." Berkeley emails applicants "in early December" with portal login details.
So treat November 30 as final for every word. If you find an error after submitting, see what to do about a UC application mistake after submitting.
Deadline and time zones
UC's pages say to "submit it by November 30." None of the UC pages we checked states the cutoff hour. UC's counselor Quick Reference Guide (August 2026) lists the UC Application Center's hours for "Nov. 29–30: Sunday–Monday" as "7 a.m.–midnight PST." Those are support hours, not a stated deadline time.
Our recommendation: submit by Sunday, November 29, 2026, in your own time zone. That holds whether you are in California, New York or Seoul, and it leaves a day for payment problems while the help line is open. If you need the exact cutoff, check the notice inside your own UC application.
Questions about the UC application and the Common App
Is the UC application on the Common App?
No. UC has its own application at UC's admissions site. One UC application covers every UC campus you choose.
Does UC have early decision or early action?
No. UC has one filing period, October 1 to November 30, for all fall applicants.
Can I apply early decision somewhere else and still apply to UC?
Yes. UC campuses do not consider where else you applied. If the early school admits you, its agreement controls, and USC's requires you to withdraw other applications.
Can I edit my UC application after submitting?
Very little. Berkeley accepts updated contact details and exam scores, but no changes to academic information, extracurriculars or PIQs.
Do UC campuses see different PIQs?
No. Every campus you choose sees the same four answers. For the California private schools on many UC lists, see which UC PIQ material fits Stanford, Caltech and Pomona.
