UIUC MSCS SOP and 250-Word Personal Statement

UIUC's MS in Computer Science asks for two statements: an Academic Statement of Purpose, "Generally … between one to two pages", and a Personal Statement of at most 250 words: it "must be within 250 words". Both are due with the application by December 1, 11:59 PM US Central for fall entry.

UIUC also prints what it grades the Academic Statement of Purpose on, and leadership is one of the four criteria. So leadership belongs in the SOP itself, not only in the short Personal Statement or the CV. This page quotes the rules, maps each criterion to a document, and shows both statements as constructed examples. When your draft is ready, a statement of purpose review against the CS rubric reads it for direction and evidence.

Every Siebel School page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. The deadline table prints dates without a year, so confirm the cycle in the application before you rely on it.

What UIUC CS asks for, verbatim

From the Siebel School's applications process and requirements page:

  • Academic Statement of Purpose (required). "This statement should include your goals and background as it relates to the field of computer science. It is good to include any past work history, your interests, and reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in computer science."
  • How it is graded. "Your statement will be evaluated for your conciseness, reasons for pursuing a graduate degree, leadership skills, and eloquence. Applicants to our M.S. or Ph.D. program will also be evaluated according to their scientific research interests."
  • Length. "Generally, the Academic Statement of Purpose is between one to two pages."
  • Personal Statement (required). "The Personal Statement is required for Computer Science admissions purposes." and "The Personal Statements must be within 250 words." The page prints no prompt for it.
  • CV. It "should address your education, job experience, research experience (M.S. or Ph.D. applicants), remarkable achievements, publications, organizations, awards, and leadership experiences."
  • Letters. "Applicants to the PhD and MS with thesis programs are required to have three letters of recommendation submitted." MCS applicants "must state relevant educational and work experience in their application in lieu of submitting letters of reference."
  • Nothing extra. "Please do not send additional materials (e.g. publications, photographs, videos, CDs, or portfolios). These items are not reviewed during the admissions process."

The five criteria, and where each one goes

UIUC names four criteria for every applicant and a fifth for MS and PhD applicants. Here is where we would put the evidence for each. The first column is UIUC's wording; the other two are our recommendation.

UIUC criterionWhat shows itWhere it goes
"conciseness"One to two pages that do not repeat the CVSOP
"reasons for pursuing a graduate degree"The problem you want to study and why a degree, not a job, gets you thereSOP; the Personal Statement can add the personal reason
"leadership skills"One episode where you led others to a result, with the result countedSOP for one episode; CV for the list
"eloquence"Plain, exact sentences a reader can follow on one passBoth statements
"scientific research interests" (MS and PhD only)A named area and a question inside itSOP

Our view: put one leadership episode in the Academic SOP. The basis is UIUC's own sentence: "Your statement will be evaluated for … leadership skills". That sentence sits in the Academic Statement of Purpose section, so the SOP is the document being graded on it. A leadership list in the CV does not answer it, because the CV is not the statement.

The countercase: if you have never led anything with a result you can name, do not invent one. Use the SOP space for research interests and preparation, which UIUC also grades, and let the CV list your roles. A made-up leadership claim fails "conciseness" and "eloquence" too, because it has nothing concrete in it.

Our reading of "eloquence": UIUC does not define it. For a writer in a second language, we read it as precision: short sentences, exact verbs, no idioms. Ornate English is not what the word asks for.

Constructed example: leadership in the SOP

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): a B.Tech computer science student who ran a peer-mentoring scheme in a college coding club. Weak version, 33 words:

I have strong leadership skills. As the head of the coding club, I organized many events and mentored juniors. This experience taught me teamwork and communication, which will help me in graduate school.

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Revised version, 63 words:

In my third year I set up a mentoring scheme in our coding club: twelve final-year students each met two first-year students weekly to review their code. I wrote the review checklist and tracked attendance. By the end of the semester, 19 of the 24 first-year students had submitted a working project. I want the same habit of code review in research teams.

The revision shows the leadership instead of claiming it: what was set up, the applicant's own part, and a counted result. Its last sentence ties the episode to graduate study, which also serves "reasons for pursuing a graduate degree". For where other activities belong, see our guide to extracurriculars in an MS SOP.

What goes in the 250-word Personal Statement

UIUC publishes two facts about the Personal Statement: it is required, and it "must be within 250 words". The department page does not print a prompt. That is unknown, not a rule, so read the prompt in the application before you draft.

For what international applicants can draw on for a personal statement, see the five kinds of material there.

Our recommendation if the prompt is open: use the 250 words for the one thing the SOP cannot carry, such as why computer science matters to you, a constraint you worked under, or a change of direction. Do not write a second list of achievements, and do not repeat the leadership paragraph. The countercase: if the application prompt asks a specific question, answer that question, even if it overlaps with the SOP.

Constructed example: a 250-word Personal Statement

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): the same applicant. 181 words, inside UIUC's 250:

I learned to program on a shared family computer that my father used for his textile shop's accounts in the evenings. My hours were before school, from six to seven. That limit shaped how I work. I planned what to write on paper the night before, so that the hour went to running and fixing code rather than starting it.

When the shop moved its stock records from paper to a spreadsheet, I wrote small scripts to check the totals each week. They caught errors my father had been finding by hand. That was the first time code I wrote changed someone's working day, and it is still the reason I care about software that people trust.

At college I had a laptop and more time, but I kept the paper habit. I still sketch a design before I open an editor, and I have taught the same method to the first-year students I mentor. Graduate study is my chance to learn this kind of careful design properly, from people who build systems at a scale I have only read about.

This statement carries context the SOP does not: where the applicant's working habits came from, and why trustworthy software matters to them. The SOP can then spend its pages on preparation, research interests and the leadership episode. For how US programs divide two statements in general, see our SOP vs personal history statement guide.

MS CS or MCS: is it the same statement?

Both programs ask for the Academic Statement of Purpose, but they are read differently:

  • MS in Computer Science: fall entry only, deadline December 1. Three letters are required. MS applicants "will also be evaluated according to their scientific research interests", so the SOP must name a research area.
  • MCS (Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, Online): fall deadlines of May 1 on campus and June 15 online, per the deadline table. No letters; applicants state their educational and work experience in the application instead. The research-interests criterion is not listed for MCS.

So an MS statement without research interests misses a criterion UIUC states, while an MCS statement does not need one. For choosing between the two degrees, see UIUC MCS vs MSCS.

Deadline, transcripts and grade rules

  • Deadline. "Posted deadlines are for 11:59 PM U.S. Central Time Zone." December 1, 11:59 PM Central Standard Time is 11:29 a.m. on December 2 in India (our arithmetic: Central time is UTC−6 in December, India is UTC+5:30).
  • No late files. "Late applications will not be accepted, and incomplete applications will be subject to denial." UIUC also recommends submitting "one month before the deadline".
  • Grading scale. "Scanned transcripts must include all grade records and the grading scale used by the institution. (If the grading scale is on the back of the transcript, a separate scanned page should be included.)" If your university prints the scale on the back of the marksheet, scan that page too.
  • Locked PDFs. "Do not upload password-protected transcripts."
  • GPA rule. The university "requires applicants to hold at least a 3.0/4.0 or higher GPA in the last two years of their undergraduate study to be eligible for graduate studies on this campus."
  • Three-year degrees. "Applicants whose undergraduate degree is a three-year program may not be eligible for graduate-level admissions consideration at the University of Illinois. Eligibility depends on the country where the applicant received their degree".

Whether a CGPA or class rank belongs in the statement itself is covered in should you mention CGPA, GRE and rank in an SOP.

UIUC ECE is a separate application

UIUC's Electrical and Computer Engineering department runs its own process. Its requirements page lists "Statement of purpose submitted." in its checklist, plus a Preferences Form that MS and PhD applicants "may access … two days after they have submitted their application". Its dates page, on October 31, 2026, printed "January 15, 2026 for admission to the fall semester (with a priority deadline of December 15)" and said materials are due "by midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST)". That year has already passed, so confirm the current ECE deadline with the department before you plan around it.

Before you submit to UIUC CS

  1. The SOP is one to two pages and names a research area (MS applicants).
  2. One leadership episode in the SOP has your own part and a counted result.
  3. The Personal Statement answers the application's prompt in 250 words or fewer and does not repeat the SOP.
  4. The CV lists the remaining leadership roles and activities.
  5. Every transcript scan includes the grading scale, with no password.
  6. You have not attached publications or portfolios, which UIUC does not review.
  7. You submit before December 1, 11:59 PM Central, ideally a month early.

Questions about the UIUC MSCS statements

What is the UIUC CS SOP word limit?

There is no word limit for the Academic Statement of Purpose. UIUC says it is "Generally … between one to two pages". The Personal Statement has a firm limit: "must be within 250 words".

Can the Personal Statement repeat my SOP?

UIUC does not say. Our recommendation is no: with only 250 words, repeating the SOP wastes the one place for context that the SOP cannot hold.

Does UIUC CS accept late applications?

No. The deadline table says "Late applications will not be accepted".

Should I send my publications separately?

No. UIUC says additional materials such as publications "are not reviewed during the admissions process." Describe them in the SOP and list them in the CV.
