What Reviewers Look For in the Study Permit Letter of Explanation — Canada

This rubric looks at whether your letter gives a clear, current reason for your proposed study, connects it to your academic or professional path, and explains why the specific program and designated learning institution fit that need. It also reviews your funding plan, your plan to follow permit conditions and leave when required if no further status is granted, and whether the letter is truthful, consistent, and easy to follow.

What We Check

1
Present Study Purpose and Student Responsibilities

Whether the response explains a present, programme-shaped reason to study in Canada and shows what the applicant understands they must do as a student.

2
Academic and Professional Progression

Whether the response traces a visible line from prior education or work to the proposed study and a bounded next use.

3
Programme and DLI Specificity

Whether the response identifies the designated learning institution and proposed programme through accurate features tied to the applicant's study needs.

4
Financial Source, Coverage, and Duration

The internal completeness of financial claims the response chooses or is instructed to discuss; do not treat prose as proof of funds.

5
Temporary Compliance and Lawful Future Intent

Whether the response states a lawful plan for the end of the authorized stay and a bounded use of the Canadian study.

6
Answering Concerns and Staying Consistent

Mistakes We Flag

Relying on general praise of Canada
Saying Canada offers a strong education or that you have always wanted to study abroad does not explain what you need to learn. State the program, the capability or question it addresses, and why this is the right next step now.
Listing your background without making connections
Degrees, jobs, and dates alone do not show why you chose this study. Link a prior course, task, or experience to the preparation, gap, or problem that the program addresses.
Naming the school and program without explaining the fit
The institution name, rankings, location, or a list of features are not enough by themselves. Choose a real program feature and explain how you will use it for a stated learning or career purpose.
Making vague funding claims
Do not simply say that funds are sufficient or that family will support you. Explain the funding source, who is providing support if applicable, what costs it covers, and how later study periods will be funded when relevant.
Assuming future immigration status or hiding relevant information
A possible future work permit or status must be described as conditional, with a plan to comply with the end of authorized stay if it is not granted. Never fabricate, alter, misrepresent, or conceal information; use truthful correction and lawful disclosure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should the letter explain about my study plans?

Explain your present purpose for study, the proposed program, and the capability, question, or next step it serves. Also show that you understand student responsibilities, such as progressing in the program and respecting permit conditions.

Can I apply in a different field from my previous education or work?

Yes. A field change, level change, or gap is not automatically a problem, but your letter should explain the bridge: the trigger for the change, transferable preparation, or a new problem that makes the move logical.

How should I discuss my plans after study?

Name a bounded post-study use for what you learn, such as a role, task, responsibility, opportunity, problem, or audience in a particular location. If you mention possible future status in Canada, make clear that it is conditional and that you will comply with the authorized end of stay if no further status is granted.

Is there a required length for this letter?

IRCC does not publish a universal required length for every letter of explanation. Follow any current instruction from IRCC, the application portal, an officer, or a local office.
