What Reviewers Look For in the Nursing — ABSN Application Essays
This rubric reviews whether each answer directly addresses its exact question, uses relevant evidence, and clearly explains what the applicant did, learned, or plans to do. It also looks at whether the full set presents a consistent nursing purpose, realistic preparation for accelerated study, clear writing, and appropriately attributed sources or shared work.
What We Check
Whether the central claim and reasoning already present in each response unit fit the relationship its question asks the applicant to show.
Whether each answer uses evidence suited to the job actually asked.
Prior experience when a question asks for preparation, teamwork, judgment, accountability, leadership, resilience, or a reason for nursing, or when an answer offers experience as support.
Readiness for compressed prelicensure study when a question asks for it or the answer offers such a claim as support.
Contradiction, repeated evidence, and division of work within the submitted response set only.
Mistakes We Flag
- Delaying the direct answer
- Long background can crowd out the nursing motivation, experience, readiness, or judgment the question asks for. Lead with your answer, then keep only context that helps explain it.
- Listing roles instead of showing your part
- Titles, duties, credentials, hours, and settings do not by themselves show preparation or influence. Use a relevant example to explain your action, decision, observation, or learning.
- Using team results as personal results
- A team, unit, or organization outcome does not show what you personally contributed. Name your own assessment, communication, action, decision, or output while recognizing others’ roles.
- Calling the program fast without a learning plan
- Wanting to finish quickly is not the same as explaining why accelerated study fits you. Connect the format to a realistic study practice, accountability habit, response to feedback, or plan for managing competing demands.
- Repeating one story across every answer
- The same experience can become repetitive if it does not serve a different purpose in each response. Keep the fullest version where it best fits and use other evidence for other questions.

How long should each answer be?
Follow any current official limit supplied with the question. If no limit is supplied, there is no required minimum; up to 1,000 words per answer is a ceiling, and a brief complete answer is acceptable.
Can I refer to another answer instead of explaining something again?
Each answer should make its own local claim and support it. A phrase such as “as discussed above” should not replace the connection the current question asks you to explain.
What if I use research, guidelines, or another source?
Identify the source and explain which claim it supports and how it informs your interpretation or proposed change. Do not present a source’s conclusion as your own finding.
