What Reviewers Look For in the Economics PhD Statement of Purpose

Whether the reasons for applying identify a usable economics research and training environment.
Mistakes We Flag
- Stating a broad social goal instead of a research question
- Saying you want to solve poverty or that economics explains everything does not show an economic relationship, behavior, institution, or allocation question you want to investigate.
- Listing tools without explaining your reasoning
- Naming software alone does not show an analytical decision. Claims about what a policy proved should match the comparison or evidence you describe.
- Calling yourself quantitatively prepared without examples
- A general label or course list does not explain what you learned to do. Use prior study, a project, independent work, or work-based learning to show how it prepared you for doctoral economics.
- Describing a team’s work without your role
- An employer, supervisor, publication, or group finding does not by itself show your contribution. Explain a decision, check, analysis, reading, data task, or other work you personally carried out.
- Using generic praise for the program
- Calling a department prestigious does not explain why it is useful for your research and training. Identify a field group, sequence, workshop, research center, or faculty connection, and make sure the statement names the correct institution.

Do I need a finished dissertation proposal or a settled research answer?
No. An exploratory research direction can be enough; a fixed dissertation plan or settled answer is not required.

No. Publications, a predoc, a named adviser, and prior contact are not universal requirements. Research experience can include a thesis, course project, independent inquiry, research assistantship, or predoc.
Must my statement include a particular research method?
No. Research reasoning may use empirical comparison, theoretical derivation, econometric analysis, or historical or institutional evidence. Theory applicants do not need data or causal identification, and empirical applicants do not need a novel theorem.
How long should my statement be?
There is no universal limit in this rubric. Follow the local program prompt: examples in the materials differ, and a program may have its own requirements.
