Indian Master’s Graduates: Australia 485 Stay
Indian nationals have specific Australian 485 stay periods for master’s and PhD graduates. Check degree type and the remaining eligibility conditions.
Indian Master’s Graduates: Australia 485 Stay
Indian nationals can receive three years after an eligible Australian master's under the 485 Post-Higher Education Work stream, including coursework degrees. The published Indian-national period for PhDs is four years. These durations do not waive the other visa requirements.
Nationality changes the duration comparison
Home Affairs' current 485 page, checked September 12, 2026, lists the following graduate stay periods:
| Australian qualification | General period | Indian-national period under AI-ECTA |
|---|---|---|
| Master's by coursework or extended master's | Two years | Three years |
| Master's by research | Three years | Three years |
| PhD | Three years | Four years |
The India-specific periods come from the Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement arrangements identified on that page. Other nationality exceptions also exist; this table is a master's/PhD comparison for Indian applicants, not a complete list of every 485 case.
The period starts when the visa is granted. Home Affairs also makes clear that you must find your own employment. Temporary work permission does not promise a job, employer sponsorship or permanent residence.
Our recommendation: use the nationality-specific rule when comparing countries, then investigate the eligibility conditions independently. Reading a generic “two years after an Australian master's” chart can understate the relevant period for an Indian national. Reading “three years” as an unconditional entitlement creates the opposite mistake.
Check the degree before calculating the benefit
Work through this procedure for the exact program you are considering:
- Record the qualification and nationality used for the application. Living in India, holding an Indian degree and being an Indian national are different facts.
- Confirm the course and study requirements. The route requires an eligible degree and the Temporary Graduate visa study requirement. Admission to an Australian university does not settle that assessment.
- Check application-time eligibility. Review age, current and recent visa history, completion timing, English evidence, health insurance and character requirements on the official page.
- Connect the course to actual work you want. Identify the skills and project experience you need. Keep a potential later skilled-work or residence application as a separate decision.
The 485 age-limit check is particularly important for applicants returning to education after several years of employment. India's longer graduate stay is not an additional age exemption.
Illustrative comparison
Imagine an Indian national and an applicant covered by the general duration rule completing the same eligible coursework master's. Assuming both meet every other requirement, the published duration table treats them differently: three years for the Indian national and two under the general rule.
Now imagine the Indian applicant choosing a shorter course whose study arrangement has not been checked. The nationality rule still cannot establish eligibility. Before comparing the extra year with another country, the applicant needs confirmation of what their actual study satisfies.
These are invented examples of the decision process, not visa outcomes or claims about a named university.
