Australia Master’s: Check the 485 Age Limit
Planning an Australian master’s at 33? Check your age when applying for the 485 visa, degree classification and the effect of a delayed completion.
Australia Master’s: Check the 485 Age Limit
At 33, calculate your age when you would apply for Australia's 485 visa, not just when the master's starts. The ordinary limit is 35 or under at application. Research master's and PhD applicants have a different published age exception.
The graduate application date controls
Home Affairs' Post-Higher Education Work rules, checked September 12, 2026, state the ordinary application limit as “35 years of age or under.” They allow applicants to be under 50 when using a research master's or PhD to meet the study requirement. Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders have a separate exception.
The wording should not be casually rewritten as “under 35.” Equally, it is not a rule about the maximum age for admission to a master's. It governs this graduate visa application.
India's particular 485 stay periods do not add another age exception. An Indian coursework master's applicant must still examine the ordinary age requirement alongside the other eligibility rules.
Our recommendation is to test the calendar before choosing a course or paying a deposit. A program can be academically appropriate while the expected graduate-work route is unavailable by the time you finish it.
Stress-test your completion calendar
Use the passport date of birth and the university's actual course dates. Create a normal-completion version and a delayed-completion version; label both as planning assumptions.
- Record your age at commencement. This establishes the starting point, not the final eligibility answer.
- Ask when successful completion can be documented. The final teaching date, graduation ceremony and evidence of completing the degree are different events. Do not assume the first lets you apply immediately.
- Estimate the graduate application window. Check the current completion, visa-history and other requirements. Do not schedule an application before you could satisfy them.
- Add a realistic delay scenario. Consider a deferred intake, repeated subject or extended project. The point is to see whether your plan relies on everything finishing exactly on time.
- Verify the degree classification. A coursework degree containing a dissertation should not simply be relabelled a research master's to claim an exception.
Illustrative timeline
Suppose an applicant starts at 33 and expects to complete at 35. Their planning sheet needs the actual dates for completion evidence and the intended application, not just “a two-year master's.”
Now suppose a deferral and project delay would make the applicant 36 when applying. That revised scenario falls outside the ordinary 35-or-under rule. A longer Indian-national stay period does not repair that age issue.
This invented case deliberately uses a clear age-36 comparison. If your application would fall close to a birthday or involve unusual visa history, have the exact dates and applicable rule checked before relying on the route.
A research-degree exception is relevant only when you genuinely want, and can qualify for, that research training. Choosing a PhD solely to solve a visa-calendar problem can leave you pursuing the wrong academic commitment.
