Does Canadian MASc Funding Cover Tuition?
A Canadian MASc funding package does not automatically mean tuition is paid separately. Some departments expect students to pay tuition and fees from their stipend. Compare the money remaining after those charges, together with the guarantee's duration and conditions.
Two funding descriptions can mean different things
UBC's School of Biomedical Engineering makes the distinction explicit: “Students pay tuition and fees from their stipend.” It also conditions support on satisfactory academic and research progress and the supervisor's continued grant support. Those details matter more to a budget than the word stipend alone.
Waterloo Electrical and Computer Engineering states that incoming full-time MASc students receive guaranteed annual funding for two years. Its FAQ separately says the guarantee does not apply to the coursework MEng. However, a funding headline alone is insufficient to calculate your after-fee living budget. Obtain the breakdown for your offer and fee status.
These are department-specific examples. Neither supports a universal claim that Canadian research master's degrees are free, or that every MASc funding package works like a US tuition waiver.
For a US assistantship, compare fees left after a graduate tuition waiver and the appointment conditions before treating a tuition waiver as a zero bill.
Compare offers using one ledger
For each offer, record the same categories:
| Item | How to treat it |
|---|---|
| Confirmed cash support | Record the annual amount, payment dates and guarantee period. |
| Tuition or fees explicitly waived or paid separately | Keep this apart from cash; establish exactly which charges are covered. |
| Tuition and compulsory fees you must pay | Subtract these from cash support unless already covered separately. |
| Possible teaching work or an undecided award | Keep outside the guaranteed budget until confirmed. |
| Renewal conditions | Record what must remain true for support to continue. |
If a package includes teaching income, ask whether the stated amount already includes it. Adding the same assistantship a second time creates money that is not there. If you win an external award later, ask whether it adds to the package or replaces another component.
If you change the entry term, verify whether graduate funding survives an admission deferral and obtain the new commitment instead of carrying the old amount into another calendar.
Work through the actual remainder
Illustrative example, created for this guide; these are not university prices: Offer A provides CAD30,000 in annual cash support. Tuition and compulsory fees of CAD10,000 are payable from it. The remainder is CAD20,000 before housing, food, transport and other personal costs.
Offer B provides CAD25,000 in cash, with tuition and compulsory fees explicitly paid separately. Its cash available for those personal costs is CAD25,000. The smaller headline cash award leaves more available after university charges in this example.
Neither calculation establishes whether the amount is enough to live on. That requires the relevant city, your housing choices and your circumstances. It also does not answer whether either program offers the right research training.
Check the second year separately. A strong first-year package can conceal a shorter guarantee, changed fees or support that depends on an unconfirmed appointment. Ask the graduate coordinator for a year-by-year explanation rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.
Resolve funding, then explain your research fit
A useful email asks: “For my fee status, which charges are paid separately, which come from the package, and how much support is guaranteed in each year?” The answer should identify conditions as well as totals.
The distinction between research and coursework master's statements helps with the next application step. For a compatible MASc SOP, consult the master's statement rubric or try a graduate statement review. That review addresses the writing, while the department must confirm financial commitments. Find other application decisions in the graduate guides.
Indian applicants should resolve UBC’s conditions for Indian three-year bachelor’s degrees separately from the statement and funding documents.
If a doctorate is the goal, work backwards through Canadian MEng-to-PhD thesis and entry requirements before deciding that a degree title preserves the route.
