Columbia MS Personal Statement: SEAS Length, Format
Columbia's Computer Science MS FAQ describes one statement, a Personal Statement for the "Columbia Engineering community", and recommends 250 to 1,000 words. It also says outright that going over is fine: "Your application will not be negatively impacted should exceed this recommendation." The preferred format is double spaced, with your name on every page.
The name misleads applicants who also apply to UC Berkeley or Purdue, where a "personal history" is a second, separate document. The FAQ describes no second statement. Its suggested topics are statement-of-purpose topics: why this program, what you have done, what you plan. Write it as an SOP. When the draft is ready, the CS, AI and data SOP rubric is where a free review starts.
Every rule quoted below comes from the Columbia Computer Science MS application FAQ, checked on October 31, 2026. That FAQ points to Columbia Engineering's own admissions page for official deadlines; that page returned HTTP 403 to us on October 31, 2026, so recheck it in a browser before you submit.
What Columbia asks you to write
The FAQ states the purpose first: "The purpose of the Personal Statement is for you to share more about your past experiences and to discuss how these experiences have contributed to your personal and professional growth." Then it lists topics "that you may want to address":
- Describe how your background has prepared you to pursue an advanced degree in the field of engineering or applied science at Columbia University.
- Describe the reasons you are interested in this program and discuss any relevant past experience.
- If you have relevant work or research experience, please indicate how it helped you decide on your career path.
- What are your post-graduation plans or career goals?
- What do you hope to gain from this program?
- What about this program excites you?
- If there are any special circumstances that need to be brought to the attention of the Admission Committee, please include that information.
The FAQ prints this list twice; the first copy leaves out the opening "background" topic. Either way, every topic but the last is about your preparation, your goals or this program. Only the last asks about circumstances, and it is conditional: "If there are any".
Is the Columbia personal statement an SOP?
In content, yes. Our view: treat Columbia's Personal Statement as a statement of purpose and give the "special circumstances" topic one paragraph at most, only if it applies. The basis is the topic list above and the FAQ's description of who reads it: "Your application will be assigned to the faculty on the MS Admissions committee and pass through several stages of review."
The countercase: if something in your record needs explaining, such as a semester that does not match the rest, Columbia gives it a place inside this document. There is no separate optional essay on the FAQ, so the explanation goes here, briefly. A constructed example is below.
For how this differs from schools that ask for two documents, see SOP vs personal history statement for US MS programs.
How long: 250 to 1,000 words, and when to go over
The full rule, verbatim:
We recommend that your Personal Statement be between 250 and 1,000 words. Your application will not be negatively impacted should exceed this recommendation. Please do not email us to request permission to exceed this recommendation, no permission is necessary.
Our recommendation: aim for 700 to 1,000 words. Seven topics at 250 words leaves about 35 words each (our arithmetic), which is a list, not a statement. Above 1,000 words, ask of every paragraph whether a faculty reader would miss it if it were gone. Columbia removed the length penalty; it did not remove the reader's patience.
There is one case where going over earns its space. The FAQ says applicants from another field "are required to have completed at least four computer science courses covering foundations of the field and basic programming, and two mathematics courses." If you lack that coursework, it adds: "your qualifications should be clearly outlined in your application through your resume, statement, and reference letters." A mechanical or electronics graduate making that case may need more than 1,000 words, and Columbia has said that is fine.
For limits at other CS programs, compare the MS CS SOP word limits by university.
The preferred format, and the page count it produces
The FAQ introduces these with "If possible, the following format is preferred":
| Rule | Columbia's wording |
|---|---|
| Margins | "All margins should be at least one inch, and the left and right margins should be equal." |
| Spacing | "Text should be double spaced." |
| Font | "The preferred fonts are 10-point Arial or 12-point Times New Roman; however, any legible serif or sans-serif standard font may be used. Do not use script or ornamental fonts." |
| Name | "Your name should appear in the Header or Footer of every page." |
Columbia presents these as preferences ("If possible"), and they cost nothing to follow. Two of them catch applicants who reuse a file from another school. A single-spaced, one-page SOP becomes several pages here. And a file with no header has no name on pages two onward.
Double spacing changes the page count a lot. If your word processor fits about 23 to 27 double-spaced lines on a page with 1-inch margins, and each line holds about 11 to 13 words, 1,000 words fills roughly three to four pages (our arithmetic; check your own file). Columbia sets no page limit, so a four-page file is not a problem. Do not cut words to hit a page target Columbia never set. For the same rules at other schools, see SOP font, spacing and file format rules.
Columbia's authorship rule
The FAQ states it in two sentences, quoted in full:
It is integral to the admissions process that you write and submit this Personal Statement on your own. Any evidence of plagiarized materials may result in denial or revocation of admission.
That is the rule as published on the CS FAQ. If the application itself asks you to certify authorship, the certification inside the application is what you sign, so read it there.
Deadlines and what "complete" means
The FAQ lists, with no year stated:
| Entry | Deadline on the FAQ | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fall, 1st priority | January 15 | "We strongly encourage all applicants to meet the 1st deadline." |
| Fall, 2nd final | February 15 | Later applications are "reviewed on a rolling basis with later batches of applications and are less likely to be accepted." |
| Spring | October 15 | That date had passed when we checked on October 31, 2026 |
If these dates hold for Fall 2027 entry, January 15, 2027 is a Friday (our arithmetic). The time of day is not on the FAQ; it would be on the Columbia Engineering page we could not load.
"Complete" includes your letters: "A complete application consists of all application materials being uploaded and entered in the application system including reference letters." The recommendation section repeats it: "Your entire application, including recommendation letters, should be complete by the priority deadline." Reference requests go out only after you submit; the FAQ's step 2 reads: "After you submit the application, reference requests are sent to your recommendation providers." So submit early enough for letters to arrive by January 15. For other schools' dates, see MS CS deadlines for Fall 2027 in the USA.
On grades, the FAQ says: "While there is no minimum GPA requirement to apply for admission consideration, the program is highly selective. Successful applicants typically have a GPA of 3.5 or higher." For a 10-point CGPA, the FAQ sends you to the Graduate Student Affairs website for conversion, so use that page, not an online calculator.
Constructed example: a special-circumstances paragraph
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): an Indian B.Tech applicant to the Columbia MS in Computer Science whose seventh-semester grades fell.
The weak version, 50 words:
Unfortunately, my seventh semester was the most difficult period of my life due to a family emergency. Despite all the hardships, I never lost hope and continued to work hard. I believe my grades do not reflect my true potential, and I hope the committee will consider my situation sympathetically.
The revised version, 68 words:
One part of my record needs context. In my seventh semester my father had heart surgery, and I ran our family's shop for eleven weeks while attending classes. My semester grade average fell to 6.9 out of 10, against 8.6 across my other semesters. In my eighth semester I returned to 8.7, including the highest mark in my section in Compiler Design, while completing the project described above.
The revised version gives the dates, the cause in one clause, the size of the drop and the evidence of recovery. It asks for nothing. It also matches the topic's own wording: it is information that, in Columbia's words, needs "to be brought to the attention of the Admission Committee", not an appeal. It stays one paragraph inside a statement whose other paragraphs answer the program topics.
A Columbia checklist before you submit
- The statement answers the program topics: preparation, reasons for this program, goals, what you hope to gain.
- It is 700 to 1,000 words, or longer only because you are making a coursework case.
- Special circumstances, if any, take one paragraph with dates and evidence.
- One-inch equal margins, double spacing, a standard font, and your name in the header or footer of every page.
- You wrote it yourself, per the FAQ's rule above.
- You submit early enough for every letter to arrive by January 15, because "complete" includes letters.
Questions about the Columbia MS personal statement
Is Columbia's personal statement the same as a statement of purpose?
For Columbia CS MS applicants, yes in content. It is the one statement the FAQ asks for, and its suggested topics cover preparation, program fit and goals.
What happens if my Columbia personal statement is over 1,000 words?
Nothing, by Columbia's own rule: "Your application will not be negatively impacted should exceed this recommendation." You do not need permission.
Does Columbia require double spacing?
It is the preferred format, introduced with "If possible". Following it costs nothing.
Does this apply to the Columbia MS in Data Science?
We could not confirm. The MS in Data Science is run by Columbia's Data Science Institute, and its pages returned HTTP 403 to us on October 31, 2026, so we do not state its rules here. The SOP for MS in data science covers how to build that statement.
