CRNA Interview Format and Timeline by Program

There is no single CRNA interview season. Program pages put interviews anywhere from late July (Iowa, Northeastern) to the winter and spring (University of New England). Where a program publishes a decision window, it runs from within a week (Iowa's committee) to within one to two weeks (Duke, Detroit Mercy).

Our view: build your calendar from each program's own cycle, not from a general season, because a June-deadline program may have filled its class before a December-deadline program sends its first invitation. Emory runs two rounds in one cycle: a June 1 deadline "with interviews scheduled for July/August" and a September 1 deadline "with interviews scheduled for October/November".

We read 21 program pages on November 7, 2026. Several pages mix cycles or give conflicting months; where they do, the table says so. Recheck each page before you plan travel. What the panel asks is on the sibling page, CRNA school interview questions and answers.

The table: when, how, what else, and how fast

"Not stated" means the page we read gives no answer. The page link is in the first column.

VillanovaPage says "interview invitations will be sent shortly"Invitation by emailNot statedWaitlist of "up to 15", told their "numerical position"

Three of these pages need a note. Detroit Mercy's page names three different interview months in three places, so ask the program which one applies to you. Villanova's page shows an application window of "June 1, 2027, through September 1, 2027, for admission into the Summer 2028 cohort" beside "Applications are under review", so ask which cohort the invitations are for. Northeastern's page dates its virtual interviews July 2027 and names no cohort beside them.

Written essays, knowledge checks and video assessments

Five programs on the table add something to the conversation:

  • On-site writing. UAMS asks applicants "to provide written responses to specific questions during their on-campus interview session". UTHealth says "writing samples may be required at the time of interview".
  • Writing review plus a test. Rutgers says writing "will be assessed prior to and during the interview through essay and short answer question review" and that candidates "participate in a short assessment tool and knowledge evaluations".
  • Competency questions. Keiser's interviews "can include questions on chemistry, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, dosing calculations, or other critical care competencies."
  • Recorded video. UTMB requires the Kira Video Assessment and calls it "integral to the admission process".

What to study for the knowledge portion is on CRNA interview clinical and pharmacology questions. For on-site writing, practice a 30-minute timed answer to one of your program's own essay prompts. The prompt wording by program is in CRNA essay prompts by program.

Is there a CRNA interview scoring rubric? None of the 21 pages we read publishes one. Augusta is the only one that says how the interview counts: "Interviews are a weighted component of the total application score." It does not publish the weight. A CRNA interview rubric you find elsewhere is not one these programs published.

How many applicants get interviews

Six program pages give an interview count against seats or applicants:

ProgramWhat the page says
USC"Program interviews are limited to approximately 60 qualified applicants to fill up to 28 seats."
Villanova"We interview approximately 50 to 60 qualified applicants for 36 seats in the Cohort."
KUMC"The top 60 applicants will be invited to interview each year."
UAMS"Generally, 2-3 times the number of applicants for the available spaces"
MUSC"more than 200 applicants each year. Approximately 60 candidates are invited for in-person interviews."
OtterbeinApplicants: "Over 100 applicants"; interviewed: "50-60 applicants"; admitted: "Up to 24 students"

At USC that is roughly two interviewees per seat, at Villanova between 1.4 and 1.7, and at Otterbein about 2.1 to 2.5 (our arithmetic). Admitted-student GPAs and ICU years for these and other programs are in the CRNA requirements table. Put the other way: at USC, Villanova and Otterbein, the published counts mean 40% to 72% of interviewees can be offered a seat (our arithmetic, seats divided by interviewees).

Does the CRNA interview matter more than GPA?

No program we read publishes the weights, so no one can give you a ratio. What the pages do say:

  • The interview is a required gate. Emory: "Applicants will not be admitted without an interview." UNE: "Interviews are a required part of the application process".
  • The file decides who gets that far. MUSC reviews applications "for critical care experience, GPA and GRE, leadership experiences, references, essays and other life experiences" before it "invites the most qualified candidates". Keiser says "Overall GPA should be 3.0 or higher to be considered for interview."
  • At Augusta the interview is scored. It is "a weighted component of the total application score".

Our view: GPA and ICU time get you into the room; once you are there, the interview is the part of the file you can still change. The countercase: at a program that ranks applicants on a total score (Augusta's wording), a strong interview may not fully offset a weak file, so a reapplicant with a low science GPA should fix the grade before the next cycle, not only the interview.

When invites go out and how to reply

Invitation timing follows each program's deadline. Georgetown says: "No invitations to interview will be sent before the priority deadline passes". Detroit Mercy says that "in early fall (September-October), we will notify applicants about interviews scheduled for November". Duke says qualified applicants "are usually notified on a rolling basis". Iowa notifies selected applicants "by mid-June" for interviews in late July and early August.

Reply the same day if you can, and keep it short.

Constructed example: interview invitation reply

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Context (invented): an invitation offering two dates by email.

Subject: Interview confirmation, Elif Arslan, DNP Nurse Anesthesia

Dear Ms. Reyes,

Thank you for the invitation. I accept the October 14 interview slot. Please confirm whether it is on campus or virtual, and whether there is a written portion I should plan time for. I don't need any accommodations. My phone number is in my application if anything changes.

Sincerely, Elif Arslan, RN, CCRN

The body is 5 sentences. It accepts one slot, asks the two format questions the table shows programs answer differently (on campus or virtual; written portion), and stops. If you do need an accommodation, say what it is in that sentence instead.

After the interview: decision windows and outcomes

The outcome words differ by program, and they mean different things:

ProgramOutcomes the page namesTiming
Duke"admitted, waitlisted, or declined""typically released within 1-2 weeks of the interview"
Detroit Mercy"accepted, accepted as alternates, or their application is denied"Goal "within two weeks after the interviews"
USCAn "alternate list is generated and utilized every year"; "The program does not disclose applicant rankings.""after all interviews are completed"
VillanovaWaitlist of "up to 15", with "their numerical position on the waitlist"Not stated
EmoryWaitlist; a waitlisted applicant not selected "will be required to reapply"Waitlist decisions "up to the first day of orientation"

Two rules limit how many tries you get. Oakland says "Applicants will only interview once per year." Emory says "Applicants will be limited to two interviews." Plan your list with those caps in mind.

What to send after the day is on thank-you email after a nursing school interview. If you are placed on a list, nursing school waitlist and alternate list covers what moves it. If the answer is no, rejected from CRNA school: feedback email and plan covers which programs give feedback.

Questions about CRNA interview timing

When do CRNA schools send interview invites?

After their deadline or on a rolling basis, depending on the program. Georgetown sends none before its priority deadline; Duke notifies on a rolling basis; Iowa notifies by mid-June for summer interviews.

How long after a CRNA interview do you hear back?

At the programs that publish a window, one to two weeks: Duke "within 1-2 weeks", Detroit Mercy "within two weeks", KUMC "a few weeks later". USC decides "after all interviews are completed".

Are CRNA interviews in person or virtual?

Both. MUSC, UAMS and Iowa interview in person; Northeastern and UC Davis are virtual; Augusta offers virtual only beyond 500 miles; Columbia uses either.

Is there a written exam at a CRNA interview?

At some programs. UAMS, UTHealth and Rutgers describe writing at or around the interview, and Rutgers adds knowledge evaluations.
