Dental School Waitlist Letter of Continued Interest

Dental waitlists move after the March 1 hold report and into August. What UF, Columbia and Kentucky say, what to send, and a constructed letter.

Dental School Waitlist Letter of Continued Interest

Send one letter of continued interest after you are placed on a dental waitlist, then send each new result as it lands, and nothing on a schedule. Dental waitlists move on other applicants' decisions: ADEA has schools report every held seat by March 1, 2027, and the University of Florida says that, historically, most of its waitlist offers arrive "by the end of July."

At a ranked waitlist, a letter that only repeats your interest gives the committee nothing to re-rank. The University of Florida says so in plain words: "You have the ability to change your rank; therefore, it is important to notify us immediately of any recently completed work." This page shows what the schools publish, when the list moves, what actually moves you, and a constructed letter you can adapt. If you want a check before you send, the letter of intent and interest rubric is the closest rubric for this letter.

Every ADEA, Liaison and school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. School pages change between cycles, and several still show last cycle's text, which we flag where it matters.

Waitlist, alternate, hold: the words schools use

ADEA's guidelines for dental schools set offer dates and response periods. They do not define a waitlist, so each school's own page is the rule you are working inside.

SchoolWhat its page says about the waitlistLetters or updates
University of Florida (page written for the class entering Fall 2026)"Waitlist is Ranked"; "we will NOT disclose a candidate's position on the waitlist"Email final grades, degree verification, new DAT scores and "Letters of Interest" to the admissions office
Columbia"you will need to respond within seven (7) days to inform us know [sic] that you are interested in being considered as an alternate"Not stated
University of Kentucky"If not offered admission, candidates may be waitlisted or declined.""If waitlisted, candidates may submit updates and letters of intent."
UICNo waitlist wordingNo transcripts, extra letters or other documents after AADSAS submission "unless requested by the Admissions staff"
PittA "deferred enrollment list" for admitted applicants who deposit after seats fillNot stated

Two of these are not what they look like. Pitt's "deferred enrollment list" is for people who were already admitted and deposited too late: "Seats for the incoming class will be filled in the order in which deposits of individuals who have been offered admission to the University are received". It is not a waitlist you can write your way up. And Columbia's seven-day reply is a condition of staying on its list at all, so answer that email first; the letter comes second.

Our view: treat "alternate" and "waitlist" as the same status unless the school's page says otherwise. UF uses them together ("alternate/waitlisted candidate"), and no ADEA rule separates them.

When dental waitlists move

The ADEA guidelines create three moments when seats come loose. The 2026-27 dates below are our arithmetic from ADEA's rules and its 2026-27 important dates, which list "Dec. 15, 2026 | 2026–27 dental school acceptance notification date".

WhenWhat ADEA's guidelines sayWhat it means for a waitlist
Tue, Dec 15, 2026 to Sun, Jan 31, 2027Applicants offered a seat get "the minimum response period of 30 days"First offers go out
From Mon, Feb 1, 2027"the minimum response period may be reduced to 15 days"Later offers can carry 15-day deadlines
Mon, Mar 1, 2027Schools "report to ADEA AADSAS by March 1 the names of candidates who hold a position in their entering class"After March 5, schools learn who holds more than one seat and give them "a minimum 15-day notice to affirm their position in the class or to withdraw"
After Thu, Apr 15, 2027"Notification times may be shortened after April 15."Offers can come with short deadlines
After Sat, May 15, 2027"The response period may be lifted after May 15, or two weeks before the beginning of the academic year, whichever comes first."The school sets the response time

The schools' own pages fill in the tail. Columbia says "Waitlist candidates will be considered in the months of February through July" and lists "March - April: Waitlist is utilized to fill the class". UF says "Historically, most waitlisted candidates who receive offers of admission are notified by the end of July" and that the list "will officially close after all students have checked in to orientation in August."

Columbia's page also still says first offers go out "on December 1st in accordance with ADEA traffic rules." ADEA's own 2026-27 date is December 15, so read the Columbia line as unrevised text. The December 15 ADEA rules page covers the offer calendar in full, and holding multiple dental school acceptances covers what the March 1 report means if you hold a seat yourself.

For Texas dental waitlists through TMDSAS, none of the four schools' pages states a letter policy, so ask first.

What actually moves a ranked waitlist

UF's page is the most specific public statement we found of what a dental school re-ranks on. Its list of "recently completed work" to email:

  • "Final Grade reports"
  • "Degree verification"
  • "New DAT scores"
  • "Letters of Interest"

It then adds: "We strongly advise you to take advantage of the ADEA AADSAS Academic Update period." Three of the four items are new evidence; the letter is the fourth. That ordering is the case for sending one letter and then results.

Academic Update. Liaison's Academic Update page gives the second window as "December 1, 2026 and February 5, 2027", with updates sent "no later than 11:59 PM ET on February 5, 2027." Two rules shape your timing: "you can only update your grades once during the Academic Update period", and "Academic Update is an optional process; check with your programs to determine if they require it." So wait for fall grades to post, submit once, and tell the school in one line that the update is in. The dental update letter and Academic Update guide walks through the mechanics.

A new DAT. The ADA's DAT 2026 Candidate Guide says "Candidates must wait 60 days between testing attempts on the DAT" and "If a candidate has tested more than once, a history of all testing attempts is reported." Results reach schools "within three to four weeks of the testing date". A retake in March reaches a waitlist in April at the earliest, and the school sees both scores. Retake only if the new score will be clearly higher.

What does not move a ranked list: a second letter that restates the first, a recommendation letter the school did not ask for (UIC says it cannot accept one after submission "unless requested by the Admissions staff"), or a monthly check-in.

How often to write

The published requirement: Columbia requires a reply within seven days of the waitlist notice. UF asks you to report "recently completed work" "immediately." Kentucky allows "updates and letters of intent." No school page we checked sets a frequency.

Our recommendation: one letter of continued interest within two weeks of the waitlist notice, then one short email per real new result (final grades, a degree conferred, a new DAT score, a new role that changes your file). If nothing new happens, send nothing. The basis is UF's own list: every item on it is a result, and UF explains that "we regularly receive updates and adjust rank scores accordingly".

The countercase: a school whose page says it accepts no documents after submission, like UIC. There, send nothing unless the admissions office asks, and put your energy into the schools that read updates.

Unknown: whether any school's committee counts the number of contacts. No school we checked publishes that.

Never call a school your first choice in more than one letter. "First choice" and "I will enroll" are promises; they go to one school. The dental school letter of intent guide covers that letter on its own.

Constructed letter of continued interest

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Bartholomew Nkemelu interviewed at a state dental school in October, was placed on its ranked waitlist in February 2027, holds no other seat, and has a new fall grade and a new clinic role to report.

Subject: Letter of continued interest, Bartholomew Nkemelu, AADSAS ID 00000000

Dear Admissions Committee,

Thank you for placing me on the waitlist for the class entering in 2027. I still want a seat in this class, and I want to share two things that have changed since my October interview.

First, my fall grades are final. I earned an A in Biochemistry, and I submitted them through the ADEA AADSAS Academic Update on January 12.

Second, in December I started as a part-time sterilization assistant at a community health center that sees mostly Medicaid patients. Last month a seven-year-old came in with four untreated cavities, and the dentist spent ten minutes showing his mother how to brush a child's back molars before she touched a handpiece. That conversation is the part of dentistry I want to learn first, and it is why [the community clinic rotation named on the school's own website] matters to me more than any other feature of your program.

I will send my spring grades when they post in May. Thank you for your continued consideration.

Sincerely, Bartholomew Nkemelu

The letter is 166 words from "Thank you for placing" to "consideration." Here is why each part is there:

  • "I still want a seat in this class" states interest, not a promise. It is not "first choice" or "I will enroll", so it can go to every school where Bartholomew is waitlisted.
  • Two dated facts, each new since the interview. The grade points to the Academic Update, so the school can verify it.
  • One scene with a person and an action in place of adjectives about passion. A reader can picture it.
  • One school feature in brackets. Replace it with a real program from the school's pages. A letter that names nothing about the school fails the first test the rubric applies.
  • One promised next step that matches UF-style practice: the next result, not a next letter.

Cut from the first draft: a paragraph re-telling the personal statement, a list of the school's rankings, and "I would be honored", which says nothing a waitlisted applicant would not say.

Waitlist decision procedure

  1. Reply to the waitlist notice within the window the email sets (seven days at Columbia).
  2. Read the school's page. If it says it accepts no documents after submission, stop here for that school.
  3. Send one letter of continued interest within two weeks, with your new facts and one real school feature.
  4. Submit the Academic Update once, after fall grades post and by 11:59 PM ET on February 5, 2027.
  5. Email each new result the day it is official: grades, degree, DAT score.
  6. If you accept a seat elsewhere and stop wanting this one, withdraw in writing. UF says "written notification via email is required." The dental school decline email guide has the wording.
  7. If the list closes without an offer, the reapply, DAT retake or essay guide covers what to change before you reapply.

Questions about dental school waitlists

Is a dental school waitlist ranked?

At some schools. UF's page says "Waitlist is Ranked" and that it will not disclose your position. The other four schools in our table do not say either way.

Should I send an update letter while on a dental school waitlist?

Yes, where the school accepts one. UF and Kentucky invite updates; UIC says it cannot accept documents after submission unless requested.

How late can a dental waitlist offer come?

Into August. UF says offers "can be extended from December through Orientation in August every cycle."

Can I ask for my waitlist position?

You can ask, but UF says it "will NOT disclose" it. Spend that email on a new result instead.
