What computing programs publish about non-CS applicants, which ones built a bridge degree, and how to write the switch as coverage instead of apology.
ECE to CS: How to Explain the Switch in Your Statement of Purpose
If your degree is in electrical, electronics or computer engineering — or in physics, mathematics or mechanical engineering — and you are applying to a computing master's, the statement of purpose is where most applicants decide to apologise. The advice encourages it: bridge the story, explain the passion, account for the gap.
The programs say close to the opposite. They publish what a non-CS applicant has to show, several built an entire degree for your case, and one department tells you not to apply. That published record, not a narrative, is what your switch paragraph answers. For CS statements generally, start with what MS and PhD applications actually ask.
What programs actually say about a non-CS background
The ones that say yes, with conditions
Stanford's CS master's FAQ says it is "not required that a student have majored in CS but it is important that you have strong quantitative and analytical skills." Georgia Tech writes that students holding a bachelor's degree in something other than computer science "are encouraged to apply as well, with the understanding that they may be required to complete remedial course work." Texas A&M asks them to show "adequate preparation… through work experience, training or non-traditional education," NC State writes that "many prospective applicants successfully make up gaps in their preparation," and Boston University welcomes "students with gaps in their CS background but strong academic records overall."
The ones that publish a preferred background
Michigan's CSE department says "most successful applicants have a degree in computer science, engineering, physics, or mathematics" — engineering named second. Duke goes further and names your degree: "students with degrees in Math or ECE and a strong background in CS often do very well." On the published record, ECE is one of the best-positioned non-CS origins there is. That is worth knowing before you write a paragraph explaining it away.
The one that says no
McGill's computer science department writes: "If you do not have the background described, please do not apply. We do not offer any qualifying program…" No amount of writing fixes that; it is a targeting decision, not a statement problem. Read the pages before you pay the fees.
The ones built for switchers, with their own prompts
Switching in is a funded product category, and its applications are not the application you were about to write.
Northeastern's Khoury College calls Align "our unique, inclusive approach to graduate education for non-tech majors," and it does not ask for a statement of purpose at all: you answer two of three essays at 250 words each, one of them "What drives your transition into tech?" UPenn's MCIT Online asks for a 1,000-1,500 word essay against seven published questions, with an eighth for reapplicants, including one no other program asks: "Given that the program is designed for people without a CS background, if you feel that your resume could be perceived as overqualified, please explain why MCIT Online is right for you." Columbia runs a dedicated CS@CU MS Bridge Program with its own two essays and a two-page limit. NYU Tandon runs the NYU Tandon Bridge Program, an online course whose completers receive a "Certificate in Core Computer Science Principles," and UBC publishes three named bridge pathways.
The practical consequence: a compressed version of your general statement is the wrong answer to a 250-word transition question.
The prerequisite list is the actual specification
Where programs name prerequisites, the list is what your paragraph has to answer. UIUC's professional MCS names object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, linear algebra, and statistics or probability, and encourages non-CS bachelor's holders to apply. Cornell's MEng names five prerequisite areas and advises self-taught applicants to document their self-study and obtain professional attestation letters. UC San Diego considers other-discipline degrees with the minimum CSE courses completed. Pull your program's list and mark each item covered, partly covered, or not covered.
Writing the switch: three moves
Coverage, not apology
The switch paragraph maps your transcript and your built work onto the published prerequisite list, item by item, and says which item is not yet covered and what you are doing about it. An applicant who names the gap is easier to read than one who leaves the committee to find it. The same move runs in the other direction for computing graduates moving into the life sciences: from CS to computational biology.
The adjacency is evidence, not an excuse
Most of an ECE transcript is CS preparation under a different course code: computer architecture, embedded systems, digital design, signals work one step from machine learning, firmware that is operating systems by another name. Name the course or project as preparation for a specific thing, with the outcome attached.
One sentence on the seam, where the program invites it
Columbia's application FAQ says: "If there are any special circumstances that need to be brought to the attention of the Admission Committee, please include that information." A switcher excerpt, annotated
The pair below is a constructed example — switcher track — written by GradPilot for this page. It is not a real applicant's statement and carries no admissions outcome.
Weaker: Although my bachelor's degree is in electronics and communication engineering rather than computer science, I have always been passionate about software and have worked hard to teach myself programming. I am confident I can handle the coursework despite my different background.
Stronger: My degree is in electronics and communication engineering, which covers four of the five areas on your prerequisite list: I took data structures and algorithms in my second year, linear algebra and probability in the core sequence, and wrote the scheduler for a real-time sensor board in C for my final project. The gap is formal object-oriented design, and I am completing the university's Java sequence this term.
What a reader notices: the second version answers the published list rather than the applicant's feelings about it, and the sentence naming what is missing is the one that makes the rest credible. Every item in it is checkable against a transcript.
Mistakes specific to a switching statement
Apologising for the degree you have. Duke and Michigan publish that engineering backgrounds do well. Lead with the coverage.
Claiming coverage the transcript does not show. An overstated prerequisite turns a background question into a credibility question.
Listing projects without your specific input. "Worked on an embedded systems project" is invisible. Name what you wrote and what it had to do.
Sending a general statement to a bridge program's prompt set. Align's 250-word transition question and MCIT's seven-question set are their own documents.
Treating a MOOC or bootcamp as equivalent to for-credit coursework. Georgia Tech's OMSCS publishes that non-credit courses "are rarely considered sufficient" and that "Work experience and industry certifications are rarely relevant as well." Say which kind of course it was.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get into an MS in CS from an ECE or another engineering degree?
Yes, at most programs. Stanford, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, NC State and Boston University all publish that a CS degree is not required, several with remedial coursework attached. Check each department's page: a minority publish a preferred background, one publishes a refusal.
Do I need to explain why I am switching, or just show I can do the work?
Show the work first. A short, specific reason helps a reader place you, but the paragraph that changes decisions maps your preparation onto the program's prerequisite list.
Should I apply to the bridge version or the regular MS?
Read the prerequisite list. Cover most of it and the regular program is usually the better application; cover little of it and a bridge degree is built for exactly that, with its own questions. Northeastern routes non-CS applicants to its bridge program itself. US programs only here: the UK conversion master's is a separate system.
Do I need research experience for an MS in CS?
No — most computing master's programs are coursework degrees. See writing a statement with no research experience; a documented self-study path counts at programs like Cornell that ask for attestation.
Is this the same as a career change?
