From CS to Computational Biology: The SOP

Do not apologise for having no bench work. Computational biology programs say in writing that wet-lab experience is not required; what they ask for is quantitative preparation attached to a biological question you have worked on.

The programs say it themselves

UNC's bioinformatics and computational biology program (a doctoral program admitting through UNC's BBSP umbrella) answers it directly. Its committee "is used to seeing students from a range of backgrounds (eg, math, economics, physics, biology, etc) that often do not include any wet lab experience. Experience in a wet lab is not at all required." What it wants instead: "typically competitive applications show coursework and/or experience in both biological/chemical/biomedical science and quantitative subjects" (admissions).

Stanford's biomedical data science program publishes the fullest prompt in the field — "tell us how your schooling, work, research, and life experiences prepare you for study at DBDS, describe your current research interests and career goals, and explain how our training program will enable you to achieve them" — caps it at "1-2 pages", and shuts a door computing applicants reach for: "Please do not append class projects, research proposals, draft manuscripts, published papers, posters, or other ancilliary materials" (prospective students).

Read together, the shape is clear: your repository is not an exhibit, and the statement has to carry the work in prose. Across nine bioinformatics and computational biology master's programs read in September 2026, not one asked applicants to name a principal investigator inside it. Where faculty interest is collected at all it is a form field — UNC's doctoral program tells applicants to "list 'Computational Biology' in the Areas of Interest section," not to argue it in an essay.

Put the engineering onto a biological question

The failure mode here is a skills inventory with a biology sentence bolted on. The fix is one project, told as biology.

  1. Pick the work where the data fought back — not the biggest system you built, the one where a biological fact broke an assumption.
  2. Name the biological question, then the method, then what changed. The question is what makes it computational biology rather than data engineering.
  3. Map your preparation to the published prerequisites — calculus, linear algebra, probability, the programming sequence — and date what is outstanding.
  4. Skip the apology. No sentence beginning "although I lack wet-lab experience."

Weaker: Although I do not have a biology background, I am proficient in Python, C++ and distributed systems, and I have recently become interested in applying machine learning to genomics.

Stronger: I built the deduplication service for a logging pipeline, then ran the same idea over a public variant set and found that most of my "duplicates" were a reference-build mismatch, not repeated records. Working out why cost me a fortnight and a genomics course, and it is why I now read a dataset's provenance before its schema. I want to keep working on how reference choice propagates into downstream calls.

What a reader notices: real engineering doing biology, a mistake the applicant found and explained, and a direction that follows from the work rather than from a faculty list. Nothing is appended; the evidence is in the prose.
