France: Can Alumni Work on Five-Year Visas?
No. France's five-year alumni visa for eligible Indian graduates does not permit employment or job searching. It is a short-stay visa with extended validity. The post-study route for eligible French master's graduates is a different permission with different conditions.
Five-year validity does not mean five-year residence
Campus France India's alumni-visa guidance describes a multiple-entry short-stay visa with validity of up to five years. It explicitly excludes work and job searching. Eligibility includes a master's or higher degree and qualifying prior study in France; the degree need not necessarily have been awarded in France for this visitor provision.
The same official page separately describes post-study long-stay permission for eligible holders of a master's or higher degree obtained in France: one year, renewable once. It also describes applying from India within four years of obtaining the French degree. That application window is not four years of permission to remain.
France's general graduate residence guidance describes its one-year job-search or business-creation card and points to separate provisions for nationalities covered by bilateral agreements. Read the India-specific instructions alongside the relevant route; do not combine attractive numbers from different permissions into one supposed entitlement.
Compare purpose, validity and permitted stay
Use this original decision procedure when a course brochure advertises an alumni visa:

A useful comparison keeps those answers in separate cells. If a school says “five-year visa,” request the official route name before treating that claim as evidence of employment access. The relevant question is whether the permission supports your intended activity, not whether the number is larger than another country's graduate period.
Illustrative example, created for this guide: An Indian graduate completes a qualifying semester in France during a degree program and later obtains a master's abroad. They read that some alumni can apply for a five-year visitor visa and infer that they can relocate to France to search for work. The official visitor guidance does not support that inference. They need to investigate a route that actually authorises their proposed stay and activity.
