Fulbright Colombia Essays: The Published Weights
Fulbright Colombia master's essays: two English pages each, no university names. Of the objective's 30 points, 20 are for relevance and impact.
Fulbright Colombia Essays: The Published Weights
Fulbright Colombia's J. William Fulbright Program (master's) asks for two essays, a Study/Research Objectives essay and a Personal Statement, each at most 2 pages, in English, with no university names. The commission publishes the weights: each essay is worth 30 of 100 points in the academic evaluation.
Colombia publishes how the essays are marked. The detail that should change your draft: 20 of the objective's 30 points go to "Pertinencia e Impacto de la propuesta en el área de estudio y para Colombia" (relevance and impact of the proposal for the field and for Colombia). An objective that is excellent about data science but vague about a named Colombian problem leaves most of those 20 on the table.
The rules below come from the commission's terms of reference for cohort 2027 (version 2, March 4, 2026) and its FAQ for the 2026 call, checked on October 31, 2026. That call closed on May 15, 2026, and the program page still showed it when we checked, with no newer call posted. Read the next call's terms when they appear; weights and formats can change. Eligibility, the grade floor and the benefits are on that page.
The two essays and their format
| Rule | Study/Research Objectives | Personal Statement |
|---|---|---|
| Length | "No debe superar las 2 páginas" | "No debe superar las 2 páginas" |
| Format | English; Times New Roman 12; 1.5 spacing "entre líneas y párrafos"; 2.5 cm margins on all sides | Same |
| Same rule |
| Weight in the academic evaluation | 30 points | 30 points |
How much fits in 2 pages? By our arithmetic, Times New Roman 12 at 1.5 spacing with 2.5 cm margins gives about 35 lines per A4 page and 13 to 14 words per line, so 2 pages hold roughly 800 to 900 words once you allow for paragraph breaks. The terms do not name a paper size, so check your own template.
The terms give guiding questions for each essay (our translations follow):
- Objectives: "¿Cuál es la motivación detrás de su elección de programa de maestría y cómo se alinea con sus objetivos académicos y profesionales?" (What motivates your choice of master's program, and how does it fit your goals?) and "¿De qué manera planea aplicar los conocimientos y habilidades adquiridos para contribuir al desarrollo de su país al finalizar sus estudios?" (How will you apply what you learn to your country's development after your studies?)
(What makes you an ideal candidate, and how does your profile serve Fulbright's mission?) and "¿Cómo imagina su trayectoria profesional a su regreso y qué impacto espera generar en su campo de acción/área de estudio?" (How do you see your career after you return, and what impact do you expect?)
Why you cannot name universities
Our reading: the FAQ explains why. "La Comisión Fulbright Colombia aplica por usted y junto con nuestra agencia especialista en EE.UU." (The commission applies for you, with its US partner agency.) The application plan "incluirá entre cuatro y cinco universidades, tres de ellas sugeridas por la agencia" (will include four or five universities, three of them suggested by the agency). Another answer in the same FAQ says the commission applies to up to four master's programs. Your essays may reach universities you did not choose. An essay that names one of them reads wrong at the other three. Describe the program type instead: a thesis track, a methods sequence, a field the program is organized around.
The published weights, and what they mean for your essays
The academic evaluation is 70% of the final mark, judged by "al menos dos pares académicos" (at least two academic peers). The interview is the other 30%.
| Stage | Criterion (the terms' words, shortened) | Weight in the stage | Share of final mark (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Academic evaluation | Objectives essay: relevance and impact for the field and Colombia | 20 | 14% |
| Academic evaluation | Academic and professional record | 25 | 17.5% |
| Academic evaluation | Recommendation letters | 15 | 10.5% |
| Interview | Leadership 40, impact 30, resilience and adaptability 30 | 100 | 30% |
Our arithmetic: each academic-evaluation weight is out of 100 and the stage is worth 70% of the final mark, so 20 points become 14% (20 × 0.70). The terms say interview panels mark each criterion from 0 to 5 and weight it.
Read the table this way. By our arithmetic, the two essays together carry 42% of the final mark, more than twice the 17.5% for your academic and professional record. That is the commission's own weighting, and the case for spending your time on the essays. The countercase: you reach the essays only if you clear the technical review, and you reach the interview only if your academic-evaluation mark meets the commission's minimum, which the terms do not publish.
Writing the 20 points: a named problem with a multidisciplinary angle
The terms ask that objectives be "relevantes para el desarrollo de Colombia, definiendo una problemática o situación en específico con enfoque multidisciplinar" (relevant to Colombia's development, defining a specific problem or situation with a multidisciplinary approach). They also ask you to "describir el programa de interés y explicar cómo este se enmarca dentro de su experiencia" (describe the program you want and explain how it fits your experience).
The call also names priority areas. Its program page lists: artificial intelligence, machine learning, technology and data science; STEAM; territorial planning and water management; food security and biotechnology; entrepreneurship, business and internationalization; security and peace; and the fight against drugs. Among the terms' common reasons for non-selection is "La propuesta académica no está enmarcada en las áreas patrocinadas o priorizadas por el programa." (The proposal is not framed within the program's sponsored or priority areas.) So the objective should make its area obvious in the first paragraph.
A four-part plan for the objectives essay that follows the terms' own order:
- The problem. Where, in which sector, and who it affects. One paragraph.
- The angle. Which two disciplines meet in the problem: that is the "enfoque multidisciplinar".
- The program type. What a US master's gives you that you lack, described as features, not as a university.
- The return. What you will do with it in Colombia, at what scale, in which institution type.
Parts 1, 2 and 4 serve the 20 points. Part 3, and the links between parts, serve the 10 points for coherence.
The personal statement as a short biographical narrative
The terms say the personal statement "debe ser una corta narrativa biográfica relacionada con usted y sus aspiraciones en relación con el Programa Fulbright al que se está postulando y no debe ser un registro de los hechos ya enumerados en otros requisitos." (It must be a short biographical narrative about you and your aspirations for this Fulbright program, not a record of facts already listed in other requirements.) It invites "su historia, su familia, obstáculos que haya superado, propósitos, metas" (your story, family, obstacles overcome, purposes, goals) and "cómo espera retribuir al país" (how you expect to give back to the country).
Its one criterion is coherence and clarity of your reasons for applying to Fulbright. Our view: the strongest test of coherence is that the personal statement ends where the objective begins. The return obligation itself, 730 days in Colombia, is set out in the terms; the Fulbright personal statement guide shows how to turn it into a concrete job rather than a promise.
CV, letters and the disqualifiers that touch your writing
The CV "Debe estar escrito en inglés en máximo 4 páginas" and "no debe incluir ninguna foto de la persona" (English, at most 4 pages, no photo). The terms add that a CV "no suele tener más de 2 páginas" (does not usually exceed 2 pages), and that 4 is for applicants with extensive experience and publications.
Section 16 of the terms lists the most common reasons for non-selection. These touch what you write:
- "Los ensayos y/o el curriculum vitae fueron escritos en español." (The essays or CV were written in Spanish.)
(Two recommendation letters are found to have the same content.)
(It is verified that the applicant generated their entire application with GenAI.)
The terms also include a declaration that the information you and your recommenders provide "es correcta, completa, y verídica" (is correct, complete and truthful). (The applicant declares that they have not used artificial intelligence in the application and undertakes, if selected, not to use it in the placement process; breaching this results in disqualification.) Read both declarations in the application before you submit.
If you draft in Spanish first, the risks of a translated SOP apply here too. How Colombian grades read on the separate US university side is covered in Latin American grades for US grad school.
Constructed example: the objective's first paragraph, before and after
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement.
Context (invented): Camila Rojas, an agronomist at a departmental agriculture office, applying for a master's in agricultural and food economics under the food-security priority area. The office, the local market pattern and the school-meal program are invented.
Before (63 words):
Colombia is a country with enormous agricultural potential, but it faces many challenges in food security. I want to pursue a master's degree in the United States to deepen my knowledge and contribute to the development of my country. The United States has the best universities in agriculture, and I am sure this experience will help me become a leader in my field.
After (93 words):
In my department, small farmers sell most of their harvest in the two weeks after it comes in, when prices are lowest, because they have no storage and no credit against stored crops. I work in the agriculture office that runs the purchase program for school meals, and I have watched it buy from intermediaries instead of those farmers. My objective is a master's in agricultural and food economics with training in market design and impact evaluation, so I can design a storage-and-credit pilot that lets the school-meal program buy directly from farmers.
How the revision earns the points:
- Relevance and impact (20): a named problem (forced early sales), a place (her department), an affected group (small farmers) and a public program that could change. It sits in the food-security area.
- Multidisciplinary angle: agronomy meets market design and evaluation, which is what the terms ask for.
- Coherence (10): problem, then her role, then the training, then the pilot. Each sentence leads to the next.
- No university name, no ranking, and no claim that the United States has "the best" anything.
