Fulbright Chile Magíster: The Three English Essays
Fulbright Chile's master's award asks for three English documents of up to 2 pages each: personal statement, study objective and retribución.
Fulbright Chile Magíster: The Three English Essays
The Beca Fulbright de Magíster asks for three English documents, each with a "Extensión máxima de 2 páginas en formato PDF": the Personal Statement, the Study Objective and the Retribución del postulante al país. A missing document, or one in the wrong format or length, can put the whole application "fuera de bases".
Do not write one essay three times. The commission's bases give each document a different job, and the third one, the Retribución, asks for things the other two do not. This page splits one goal across the three documents so that no paragraph repeats, and it uses the commission's own wording. The Fulbright program for foreign students is run country by country (see the Fulbright Foreign Student study/research objective guide for how the general prompt works), so Chile's rules below apply to Chile only.
Every rule quoted below comes from the commission's bases for the 2026 call and its magíster page, both checked on October 31, 2026. That call was for study starting in August 2027 and is closed. The next call was not posted when we checked, and bases can change between calls, so re-read the new bases when they appear.
The three documents and their limits
The bases list 16 required items. Items 12 to 14 are the essays, and all three must be in English. The CV form and the academic certificates are marked "castellano", and the three recommendation letters are requested "preferentemente en inglés".
Not every commission asks for English essays: Fulbright Spain's first-round project is written in Spanish, 1,000 to 1,500 words.
| Document (bases item) | What the bases ask for, verbatim | Limit |
|---|---|---|
They do not set a font, a font size or a word count. Two pages is the only limit, so a dense page in 9-point type is not ruled out, and it is still a bad idea for a reader who interviews you later.
One more line matters for planning. Among the benefits, the commission offers "Asesoría académica individual en las postulaciones a universidades estadounidenses, incluyendo los ensayos “personal statement” y “study objective”." So these two documents will be rewritten later for US universities. Write the Fulbright versions for the commission, not as university drafts.
Eligibility in numbers: nota, ranking, TOEFL
Check eligibility before you write anything. The 2026 bases set these rules:
- Degree: a licenciado degree, or a professional title that includes the licenciado degree, "en carreras de al menos 8 semestres de duración".
- English: TOEFL iBT or iBT Home Edition, minimum 95. The certificate must still be valid at the close of the call.
- Academic excellence: at least one of three alternatives.
| Alternative | Rule in the bases |
|---|---|
| A | nota ≥ 5.0 + ranking ≥ 30% |
| B | ranking ≥ 15% |
| C | nota ≥ 5.5 |
The nota is the simple average of undergraduate grades on the 1 to 7 scale, "excluyendo las notas de la práctica profesional, examen de grado y tesis". The ranking is your place in your graduating cohort ("Estar dentro del 30% superior de su promoción").
Our arithmetic, on two constructed cases. An applicant with a 5.3 average in the top 40% fails all three: A needs the top 30%, B needs the top 15%, and C needs 5.5. The same 5.3 in the top 25% passes A. So check the ranking certificate before you assume a 5.3 is too low.
The 2026 call was also limited to seven areas, from "Arquitectura, urbanismo y diseño" to "Seguridad", and it planned "hasta 6 becas". If your field is not on the list in the next bases, the essays do not matter.
Study objective: "carácter creativo e innovador" is a claim you must back
The Study Objective has three jobs in one sentence of the bases: why the US, which program, and "la relevancia de su área de estudios para Chile y el carácter creativo e innovador de la propuesta".
A national statistic alone does not answer this. The bases ask for more: the proposal itself must be creative and innovative. That is a claim about your plan, not about your field. Back it with three things:
- A named gap in Chile that your field addresses, stated in one or two sentences.
- The US program type and the courses, lab or method in it that you cannot get at home. The bases do not say whether to name universities; the Study/Research Objective guide sets out what to do when a commission is silent.
- What is new about your plan: a method no Chilean program teaches yet, a combination of two fields, or an application nobody in your sector runs.
The selection committee's published criteria include "Relevancia de los objetivos de estudio" and "Motivación y claridad de propósito". How each document is weighted is not published. The bases say "no se entrega información respecto del proceso de selección a los postulantes". So write each document as if it is read on its own.
Personal statement: family history without a sob story
The Personal Statement is the only document that asks for "historia familiar". Two easy mistakes are to skip it or to turn it into a hardship story. The bases list family history beside "las razones por las cuales quiere estudiar un magíster" and "planes profesionales futuros", so it belongs in the statement as a cause of the goal.
Our view: give family history one paragraph, and end that paragraph on a decision you made, not on a feeling. A parent who worked in a copper smelter matters if it explains why you chose metallurgy. It does not need adjectives.
The countercase: if your family history has no link to your field, say who you are in two sentences and move to your reasons. The bases ask you to include it; they do not ask for a link to your field. Do not invent one.
Retribución: a dissemination plan, not gratitude
This document has the most specific demands. The bases ask for three named things:
- "el compromiso a divulgar la ciencia": how you will share what you learn.
- "expectativas de inserción en el contexto científico": where you will work in the scientific or professional system.
- "el potencial aporte de la investigación en su área de conocimiento": what your work could add to the field.
There is a fourth fact behind it. The bases state that "la visa J-1 exige que los becarios retornen a Chile por un período mínimo de dos años después de terminar sus estudios". So the commission already knows you will return. The Retribución has to say what you will do once you are back.
Our view: write the Retribución first. It is the most concrete of the three documents, and once its channels are fixed you know what the Study Objective must not repeat. A good Retribución names channels a reader could check: a course you will teach, an agency or company team you will join, a dataset you will publish, a network you will run.
The countercase: the bases use the words "ciencia" and "investigación" for every area, including law, public policy and higher-education management. If you are applying for an MPA or an LL.M., your "dissemination" may be policy briefs, training for public servants or a practitioner network rather than papers. Translate the three items into your field, but answer all three.
Constructed example: one goal across three documents
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Valentina Soto, a civil mining engineer with four years at a mid-sized copper operation, plans a US master's in mineral processing. The 2026 bases list "litio y minerales críticos" under area F.
The weak version puts the same idea in all three documents:
Personal Statement: I want to study in the US to help Chile's mining sector. Study Objective: My program will help Chile's mining sector become more sustainable. Retribución: When I return, I will help Chile's mining sector and share my knowledge.
The revised version gives each document its own job:
Personal Statement (reasons, family history, plans): My father ran a flotation circuit for 22 years. I chose metallurgy after watching him adjust reagent doses by hand during night shifts. After four years in process control, I want a master's because the tailings questions my plant faces now are research questions, and I cannot answer them with on-the-job training.
Study Objective (why the US, which program, relevance, innovation): I will apply to programs with tailings-reprocessing labs. My proposal combines sensor data from flotation circuits with recovery models for low-grade tailings. My plant has the sensor data but no one trained to build those models, and the work targets copper and critical-mineral recovery from material the industry already holds.
Retribución (dissemination, insertion, contribution): I will return to process engineering at a Chilean operation. Within two years I plan to publish the reprocessing models as an open dataset, teach a short course for plant engineers through a regional university, and present results at a national mining conference.
Why the revision works: the "why mining" story appears once, in the Personal Statement. Program and novelty appear once, in the Study Objective. Only the Retribución names channels (a dataset, a course, a conference), and each matches one of the three items in bases item 14. The names, plant and programs in this example are invented.
Before you upload: the split check
Run this check on your three drafts before the deadline:
- Each document answers its own bases item. Highlight the phrases from the table above. Every phrase should have at least one sentence.
- No paragraph appears twice. If you can move a paragraph between documents without editing it, cut it from one.
- Family history appears only in the Personal Statement.
- The innovation claim appears only in the Study Objective, with a named gap, a program feature and what is new.
- The Retribución names at least three checkable channels and answers dissemination, insertion and contribution.
- Each file is a PDF of 2 pages or fewer, in English.
- Your eligibility is on paper: the nota and ranking certificates support the alternative you meet.

Questions about the Fulbright Chile essays
Can the three essays be in Spanish?
No. Items 12, 13 and 14 each say "El documento debe ser redactado en idioma inglés". The CV form and the academic certificates are marked "castellano".
Is there a word limit?
No word limit is published. The only limit in the bases is "Extensión máxima de 2 páginas en formato PDF" for each document.
Does the thesis count toward the nota?
No. The bases define the nota as the simple average of undergraduate grades "excluyendo las notas de la práctica profesional, examen de grado y tesis". Your thesis can still be evidence in the Study Objective.
Is this the same as Becas Chile?
No. These bases are the Fulbright commission's. They state the award "es compatible y complementaria con otras becas de instituciones chilenas o extranjeras". We did not use any other scholarship's rules on this page.
What happens after the essays?
Preselected applicants "serán entrevistados por un comité de selección". The committee considers, among other things, academic excellence, the relevance of the study objectives, motivation and clarity of purpose, leadership and civic commitment, awards, and work or research experience in the field.
