Is a Licenciatura a Bachelor's or Master's Degree?

For graduate admission, a licenciatura is read as a first degree, not a master's. UCLA names the licenciatura, a "four to six year" program, as the degree Latin American applicants should present. Bristol admits licenciatura holders to master's study and asks for a magíster or maestría for a PhD, with exceptions for Spain and Brazil.

That does not make the extra years worthless. It changes where they count. In the US, the licenciatura is enough to apply to graduate programs, so the fifth year and the thesis belong in your statement of purpose as research evidence. At Bristol, the UK university we checked, the same degree means a master's comes before the PhD, with two exceptions. What does not help anywhere is a sentence claiming your licenciatura "is equivalent to a master's". This page shows both rules and the one clause your statement of purpose should carry. When the draft is ready, start a statement of purpose review.

Every university page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. Only Berkeley's names a cycle (its Fall 2027 application opened September 24, 2026); the others state none, so recheck each page, and each program's own page, before you apply.

The short answer, by destination

UniversityWhat its page says about the licenciaturaLevel it gives you
UCLA"Applicants should present the Licenciado or Licenciatura, Ingeniero, or other professional title representing completion of a four to six year university-level program beyond the completion of university-preparatory secondary education"Entry degree for graduate admission
UC Berkeley"Graduates of accredited academic institutions outside the United States should hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree." No country ruleEntry degree, judged as "equivalent"
Bristol: Chile"Applicants who hold a Licenciatura with a GPA of at least 5.5 will be considered for admission onto a Masters degree. Applicants who hold a Magister with good grades will be considered for admission to PhD study."Master's; PhD needs a magíster
Bristol: Mexico"Applicants who hold a Licenciatura (grade 8+) will be considered for admission to a Masters degree." A master's for PhD; "We can only consider qualifications from selected institutions in Mexico."Master's; PhD needs a master's
Bristol: Colombia"Licenciado/Título Profesional (GPA 4+)" for a master's; "Título de Maestría/Magister" for PhDMaster's; PhD needs a maestría
Bristol: Peru"Grado Academico de Bachiller or Licenciado" for a master's; "Maestria" for PhD. "Degrees from Peru should be accredited to be considered."Master's; PhD needs a maestría
Bristol: Spain"Licenciado / Título de Ingeniero / Título de Arquitecto will be considered for admission to a Masters degree, and in exceptional cases for MPhil or PhD programmes." Minimum "7.0/10"Master's; PhD only in "exceptional cases"
Bristol: Brazil"Bacharel/Licenciado (4 years or more in duration) with good marks" for taught and for "research programmes in science and engineering subjects". Other subjects "should also hold a Mestre". e-MEC accreditation requiredMaster's; PhD in science and engineering

Two things in this table are easy to miss. UCLA's rule covers four to six years, so a four-year and a six-year licenciatura get the same treatment. And Bristol's grade lines are on each country's own scale (5.5 in Chile, 8 in Mexico, 4 in Colombia, 7.0/10 in Spain). We did not convert them; the grade pages linked below cover that.

Can you apply to a US PhD straight from a licenciatura?

On the two US pages we checked, yes: neither sets a higher entry degree for doctoral programs than for master's. Berkeley's minimum for graduate admission is "a bachelor's degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution" and "usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale". UCLA's country rule names the licenciatura as the degree to present. Individual departments can ask for more, so read each program page.

Our view: a licenciatura holder applying to a US PhD should spend the statement's research paragraph on the thesis or titulación project, not on the degree's length. The US reader already accepts your degree as an entry degree. What they want to know is whether you can do research, and a completed tesis is your best evidence of that.

The countercase: if your licenciatura ended with a professional examination rather than a thesis (UCLA's rule names both), you have no research product from the degree itself. Then the research paragraph needs a lab job, a project or a paper from elsewhere. If you have none, a master's or a research job first may make the stronger application.

UK and Europe: why you will likely do a master's first

At Bristol, every Latin American country page above sends licenciatura holders to a master's and names a magíster, maestría or mestre for PhD entry. Brazil (science and engineering) and Spain ("exceptional cases") are the only exceptions on the pages we checked. This is one university, not a UK rule. Other UK universities publish their own country pages, and you should read the one for each university on your list.

If you hold a Spanish licenciado and want a UK PhD directly, the "exceptional cases" wording means the department decides. Ask the admissions team before you write a research proposal, and keep the reply. If you are weighing a funded US PhD against a European doctoral position, the US vs Europe PhD comparison sets out how to compare the offers.

The thesis still pending: titulación timing

If you finished the coursework but not the thesis or professional exam, UCLA is direct: "Applicants are expected to have completed all degree requirements, including the thesis or professional examination, prior to the beginning of the term at UCLA for which they have applied." It also says "Certificates of completion of required courses, or of degree examinations, cannot be accepted as evidence that the degree was granted."

Applying from Mexico? The SOP for MS in USA from Mexico covers titulación timing and SECIHTI.

So a pending titulación is a timing problem, not an essay problem. Put the expected date in the application, ask your university when the título or grado certificate is issued, and see applying with an unfinished degree for what to upload meanwhile.

What to write in the SOP (and what not to)

The SOP is not where your degree gets classified. The transcript, the degree certificate and, at some schools, a credential evaluation do that. The WES evaluation guide covers when an evaluation is required. Your SOP should do two things: name the degree once, factually, and use the thesis as evidence.

Constructed example: the equivalence claim cut to one clause

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Diego Fernández holds a five-year Ingeniería Civil Industrial licenciatura and applies to US PhD programs in operations research.

The weak version:

My five-year licenciatura in Industrial Engineering is equivalent to a US master's degree, so I am already prepared for doctoral study.

The revised version:

I completed a five-year licenciatura in industrial engineering, including a year-long thesis. In the thesis I built a scheduling model for a regional hospital's surgical wards and tested it on 18 months of the hospital's records. The model cut planned overtime in simulation, but it failed when emergency admissions spiked, and that failure is the question I want to study.

Why the revision works: the first sentence states duration and thesis, which the transcript can confirm. It makes no claim the reader has to check against a rule. The rest turns the extra year into what a PhD reader wants: a question, a method, a result and a limit. The hospital, data and results in this example are invented.

The rule, in one line: state the length and the thesis; never write "equivalent to a master's". The same goes for your CV. The guide to writing a licenciatura or laurea on a CV shows the degree line.

Questions about the licenciatura

Is a licenciatura the same as a bachelor's degree?

For graduate admission at the universities we checked, it is treated as the first degree that gives entry. UCLA lists it as the entry degree for Latin America; Bristol admits it to master's study. Neither page calls it a master's.

Is a 5-year licenciatura equivalent to a master's in the UK?

Not at Bristol. Its Latin American country pages admit licenciatura holders to master's programs and name a master's-level degree for PhD study. Spain's Licenciado can reach a PhD only "in exceptional cases".

Does a Brazilian licenciatura count?

Bristol lists "Bacharel/Licenciado (4 years or more in duration)" together, requires e-MEC accreditation, and allows research entry in science and engineering. We could not load a Brazilian ministry page on the degree's legal definition on October 31, 2026, so this page does not describe it.

Does a WES evaluation make my licenciatura a master's?

No evaluation changes what your university awarded. At Berkeley, a WES ICAP evaluation is one of two ways to submit translated records. The three-year bachelor's eligibility guide covers how US schools phrase "equivalent".

Do I need to translate my degree name?

Yes, where the records are not in English. UCLA asks for "official copies of the original Spanish language records and degree certificates, and complete, exact English translations". Berkeley says degree names "should be transcribed, not converted". Brazilian bacharelado holders: the SOP for US masters from Brazil shows how to present the degree and TCC.
