SOP for US Masters From Brazil: Bacharelado to MS
A US master's SOP from Brazil: turn your TCC or iniciação científica into research, keep grades on the transcript's scale, plus a constructed MS CS draft.
SOP for US Masters From Brazil: Bacharelado to MS
A statement of purpose (SOP) for a US master's from Brazil should do three things: name your bacharelado exactly as the diploma prints it, turn your TCC or iniciação científica into one research paragraph (question, method, result, your part), and give your grade on the scale your transcript states, in one clause. UCLA's rule for Latin American degrees asks for a title that represents a four to six year university-level program, so a full Brazilian bacharelado is the expected entry degree, not a gap to explain.
A paragraph about Brazil's potential, its inequality or what the country needs tells a US reader nothing about what you can do. The paragraph they need is the one about your final project or your iniciação científica, written as research. This page shows how to write it, what to do with grades out of 10, and how to keep Portuguese habits out of the English. If you already have a draft, start a master's SOP review and choose the MS SOP rubric for computer science, AI and data before you rewrite.

What UCLA, Berkeley and Bristol say about a Brazilian degree
The SOP is read next to your transcript and CV. These are the rules that shape what the reader already knows when they reach your statement:
| Source | What it says | What it means for your SOP |
|---|---|---|
| UCLA Graduate Division, required academic records | Latin America: "Applicants should present the Licenciado or Licenciatura, Ingeniero, or other professional title representing completion of a four to six year university-level program" | A four- or five-year bacharelado or engenharia degree is the standard entry route. Do not apologize for it |
| UCLA, same page | Records "must also include a complete description of the institution's grading scale" and, if not issued in English, come "with an authorized, complete, and exact English translation" | Your transcript explains the 0–10 scale. The SOP does not need to |
| UCLA, same page | "Applicants are expected to have completed all degree requirements, including the thesis or professional examination, prior to the beginning of the term" | If your TCC is still in progress, say when you will defend it |
| UC Berkeley Graduate Division, requirements | Foreign graduates "should hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree"; the SOP "should describe your aptitude and motivation to enter the program" and can include "your preparation or specialization in the field" | Preparation is the core of the statement, and your TCC is preparation |
| University of Bristol, Brazil entry page (UK) | "All degree level qualifications from Brazil must be accredited by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (e-MEC)" | US pages we checked do not name e-MEC, but this UK rule shows what a foreign reader checks first: accreditation, not prestige |
One detail is easy to miss. UCLA's Latin America entry speaks of "the original Spanish language records". A Brazilian transcript is in Portuguese, and UCLA's general rule covers it: original language plus an exact English translation. Upload the translation your university or a sworn translator produced. Do not rewrite course names in the SOP to make them sound American.
A side note for doctoral students: Fulbright Brasil's doctoral sandwich program is a different document set. Its instruction manual asks for a Personal Statement of at most one page, in English, that must "Não mencionar universidades específicas nos EUA". That rule is for the Fulbright application only. A US master's SOP is written for one program and should name it.
Write the TCC as research, not a title
Write the degree name once, as printed: "Bacharelado em Ciência da Computação" or "Engenharia de Computação", with the university and the years. Then spend the rest of the paragraph on the Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (TCC), because that is where a US reader looks for evidence that you can do graduate work.
The four facts:
- The question. What did you try to find out or build, in one sentence?
- The method. What did you choose to do, and what did you reject?
- The result. A number, a working system, or a negative finding, stated plainly.
- Your part. If it was a pair or group TCC, which decisions were yours?
A TCC title alone tells the reader nothing. "TCC: Machine learning applied to agriculture" could be a two-week tutorial or a year of work. The four facts tell the reader which.
Iniciação científica is research experience: write it that way
The University of São Paulo describes its iniciação científica program as putting undergraduates "em contato com grupos e linhas de pesquisa", with each student "orientado por um pesquisador experiente". It also notes the student may do the research "com bolsa oferecida pelas agências de fomento, com bolsa de programas da própria USP ou sem bolsa". In other words, IC is supervised research, funded or not.
Our view: if you did iniciação científica, it is your strongest paragraph, stronger than any paragraph about Brazil's potential or your childhood interest in computers. Name the lab or group, your supervisor's role, the question, and what you produced (a poster at your university's IC congress, a dataset, a failed approach you can explain). Translate "bolsista de IC" as "undergraduate research fellow" once, then describe the work. The basis: Berkeley asks for "preparation or specialization in the field", and IC is exactly that, with a supervisor who can write your letter.
The countercase: if your IC was literature review only, or you joined for one semester and left, do not inflate it. A strong TCC or a year of relevant work can carry the paragraph instead. Professional master's programs read work experience the same way. The no research experience SOP guide covers that route.
Grades: one clause, scale as printed
Brazilian universities grade on several scales, and we could not load an official page that states one national scale, so we do not give a conversion here. Our existing guide to converting foreign grades for US applications gives the rule that applies: type the number and the maximum your transcript states. In the SOP that becomes one clause, for example "with a cumulative average of 8.4 out of 10". Do not add "equivalent to a 3.7 GPA". The reader has the transcript legend, and UCLA requires it.
If your grades dipped in one period, one sentence with the cause and the recovery is enough. For the other Latin American grade scales, see the Latin American grades guide.
Eventualmente, graduação, pretender: Portuguese false friends
None of these is a grammar slip. Each changes what your sentence claims. The definitions are Cambridge's.
- "Eventually" for eventualmente. Cambridge's Portuguese–English entry gives "occasionally, sometimes"; English eventually means "in the end, especially after a long time or a lot of effort". "I eventually worked with Python" sounds like you resisted it for years. Write "I sometimes worked with Python", or say how often.
- "Graduation" for graduação. Cambridge translates graduação as "graduate course, degree"; English graduation is "the fact of finishing a degree or other course of study at a university or school, or the ceremony at which you are officially said to have finished". "During my graduation" points to the end or the ceremony. Write "during my degree".
- "Pretend" for pretender. Cambridge translates pretender as "to intend, to want"; English pretend means "to behave as if something is true when you know that it is not". "I pretend to specialize in NLP" says you are faking it. Write "I intend to".
The full list, with dictionary definitions and a three-pass rewrite, is in our guide to SOP mistakes Spanish and Portuguese speakers make.
Constructed example: a computer engineer with iniciação científica
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Lucas Andrade, a computer engineering graduate of a federal university in Minas Gerais, applying to US MS CS programs with two years of iniciação científica.
The weak version (76 words):
Since I was a child I was fascinated by computers, and my formation in Computer Engineering at one of the best universities of Brazil gave me a solid base. Brazil is a country with enormous potential in technology, and I pretend to contribute to this development. During the graduation I eventually participated in a research project about computer vision, which was a very enriching experience. I believe your prestigious program will help me achieve my dreams.
The revised version (97 words):
I want to study efficient computer vision models for low-power devices. For two years I was an undergraduate research fellow (iniciação científica) in my university's embedded systems lab, where I asked whether a pruned image classifier could run on a USD 4 microcontroller for crop-disease detection. I chose structured pruning over quantization because our board lacked integer acceleration. My TCC model kept 91% of the baseline accuracy at one-sixth of the size; I wrote the training pipeline and the on-device benchmark. Your MS course in efficient deep learning would give me the theory my lab work lacked.
What changed, and why. The revision opens with the direction, not childhood (the CS rubric flags early computer memories). It replaces "formation", "pretend", "eventually" and "graduation", the false friends listed above ("formation" is covered in the full list linked there). It gives the IC four facts: question, method choice with a reason, result, and Lucas's own part. The numbers are invented for this example. The last sentence names one specific course; in a real draft, name a real one from the program's page.
Checklist before you submit
- Is the degree name written once, exactly as the diploma prints it?
- Does the TCC or IC paragraph give the question, method, result and your part?
- Is the grade given on the transcript's own scale, with no invented GPA?
- If the TCC is not finished, does the SOP say when you will defend it?
- Is funding one factual clause, with no appeal, and is any return plan a role in a sector ("lead fraud-model validation at a Belo Horizonte fintech"), not "contribute to Brazil's development"?
- Have you searched the draft for "pretend", "eventually", "formation", "graduation" and "career" used as Portuguese words?
- Does the last paragraph name something specific in this program?
Questions from Brazilian applicants
Should I explain that a bacharelado takes four or five years?
No. UCLA's Latin America rule already expects "a four to six year university-level program", and Berkeley's page asks for a degree equivalent to a US bachelor's. A full bacharelado meets that. The transcript shows the duration.
Should I translate my university's name?
Use the official name, in Portuguese, the way it appears on the transcript. Add the city if the name does not include it.
My TCC was in a different field from the MS. Do I still write about it?
Yes, but write about what transfers: the method, the data work or the engineering decisions. Keep it shorter and give the space to the work that matches the program.
Does the Fulbright one-page rule apply to my US master's SOP?
No. The one-page limit and the instruction not to name US universities appear in Fulbright Brasil's DDRA manual, for its doctoral sandwich program. A US program sets its own limit; follow the program's page. Our SOP length guide covers typical limits.
