Do You Need WES Before Applying for an MS?

A credential evaluation may be needed after admission rather than before applying. Separate the review stage, report type and transcript rules.

Do You Need WES Before Applying for an MS?

Not automatically. An international master's application may accept an uploaded transcript and require a credential evaluation only after you accept admission. Check the school, application stage and required report before ordering WES or treating an evaluation as a substitute for original records.

Application review and enrollment verification differ

Columbia GSAS's transcript FAQ says third-party credential evaluations are not required for application review. Applicants upload the most official, complete transcript available. If you already have an evaluation from an approved provider, the school encourages uploading it alongside the transcript.

The later requirement is different: admitted applicants who accept the offer and have studied outside the US must complete a course-by-course evaluation through an approved agency. Columbia supplies specific instructions after acceptance. “Not required to apply” therefore does not mean “never required.”

Yale GSAS's transcript FAQ accepts an uploaded unofficial academic record for initial review. An existing credential evaluation can be uploaded instead if it contains course and grade information. However, an admitted applicant accepting the offer must still have the issuing institution send an original transcript.

These are graduate-school policies, not university-wide instructions for every professional degree. Use the page for the school administering your actual program. A friend's MBA, engineering or law application may follow a different process.

Our recommendation: build the document sequence before buying the report. The important question is not whether other international students use WES; it is what your target requires from you, from whom, and at which stage.

Make a four-column document plan

For each program, record:

StageRequired documentWho supplies it?What remains unresolved?
Application reviewThe specified uploaded academic record or accepted alternative.Usually the applicant, following upload instructions.Whether a translation or evaluation is needed now.
After accepting admissionOfficial records and any required credential evaluation. The institution or approved agency, as instructed.Report type, recipient and delivery method.

Then check the report specification. A course-by-course evaluation, certified translation and original transcript serve different purposes. Do not assume that purchasing one removes every requirement for the others.

Columbia's FAQ permits certain evaluations in place of a certified translation when the transcript is not in English and a certified translation is unavailable. Yale asks for both the original-language record and its English translation. Preserve those school-specific instructions rather than creating one universal upload package.

If a portal and a departmental page appear to disagree, ask the graduate admissions office a narrow question identifying the program and stage. Keep its response with your checklist. Do not infer that a document marked required after admission must already be ordered before the application is reviewed.

Before explaining academic history, establish reporting unfinished degrees and all required transcripts so the record is complete without describing an unfinished award as earned.

An evaluation and a translation serve different purposes; check who may translate a graduate transcript before preparing or ordering the translated document.

An illustrative two-school application

Illustrative case: An Indian graduate applying to Columbia GSAS and Yale has an English-language transcript but has not purchased an evaluation.

The published initial-review instructions do not make buying that report the first action for either application. The applicant can prepare the required uploads while recording the later obligations separately.

If they accept Columbia's offer, the required evaluation becomes an enrollment-preparation task. If they accept Yale's offer, an evaluation they happen to own does not eliminate the original-transcript requirement. The same applicant therefore needs two document sequences, not a general rule copied from a forum.

Keep the statement focused on academic preparation

Once the document route is clear, use the master's SOP guide for the writing task. The general MS SOP rubric and graduate statement review address your own statement's purpose, preparation and fit. They do not evaluate credentials or verify transcripts. The graduate essay hub collects related guidance.
