3-Year Bachelor's Degree: Eligible for US Masters?
Is a 3-year bachelor's degree eligible for US masters? UCLA, NYU Tandon, Stanford, Berkeley and UIUC differ. Bologna, South Asia and UK cases, checked.
3-Year Bachelor's Degree: Eligible for US Masters?
It depends on the school and on your country's degree system. UCLA accepts a three-year Bologna bachelor's from France or Germany, but asks applicants from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan for a master's in first or high second class. NYU Tandon does not accept degrees "equivalent to three years of study", with a Bologna engineering exception.
Forum answers run both ways, from one applicant's experience to a flat 16-years-of-education rule. Neither is a published school rule. Our view: there is no single US rule, so check each school's own country rule before you pay an application fee, and do not try to argue equivalence in your statement. The eligibility rule decides it, not the SOP. Once you know you are eligible, the statement of purpose review is where your effort goes.
Every university page quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. These pages state no entry year unless noted. Eligibility rules can change, so recheck before you apply.
The rule at five schools
| School | Published rule (verbatim) | What it means for a three-year degree |
|---|---|---|
| UCLA Graduate Division | Country rules (quoted below) | Depends on the country: Bologna three-year accepted for France and Germany; South Asia needs a master's; British-tradition needs honours |
| NYU Tandon | "We do not accept undergraduate degrees that are equivalent to three years of study. However, degrees that are completed within the Bologna signatory system that are Bachelor of Engineering (or a related field), and earn 180+ ECTS credits, are eligible for consideration." | No, except a Bologna engineering bachelor's with 180+ ECTS |
| Stanford Graduate Admissions | "a U.S. bachelor's degree or its international equivalent from a college or university of recognized standing" | No country rule published; Stanford recommends the WES degree equivalency tool |
| UC Berkeley Graduate Division | "Graduates of accredited academic institutions outside the United States should hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Please contact Graduate Admissions with questions." | No country rule published; ask Graduate Admissions |
| UIUC Graduate College | "a comparable degree from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad" | No country rule published |
Only two of the five publish a rule specific enough to answer the question on the page (our count): UCLA and NYU Tandon. The other three use "equivalent" or "comparable" and leave the judgment to the school.
UCLA's country rules, quoted
UCLA's required academic records page is unusually specific:
- Bangladesh, India, Union of Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan: "Applicants should present a master's degree awarded in first or high second class. In the fields of architecture and engineering, however, students who achieve first class placement for the bachelor's degree may also be considered for graduate admission."
- France: "Applicants who studied under the Bologna Process should present the bachelor's (three year) degree or the master's (3 + 2) degree."
- Germany: the same Bologna sentence. The Germany entry also still says: "Holders of the Vordiplom, Zwischenprüfung, Bachelor/Bakkalaureus, or a diploma from a fachhochschule are not considered for graduate admission." The two sentences sit side by side on the page. If you hold a German bachelor's, ask UCLA which applies to your degree before you apply.
- United Kingdom and schools in the British tradition (other than the five South Asian countries): "must have completed an Honours degree in first or upper second class." And: "Three-year ordinary or pass degrees are not acceptable."
- Everywhere: "International students who hold three-year ordinary pass degrees … are not eligible for graduate admission."
UCLA's rule for South Asia is about the class of degree and the level, not only the years. In architecture and engineering, a bachelor's with first-class placement "may also be considered". A three-year BA, BSc or BCom alone does not meet the master's requirement.
Decision aid by degree type
| Your degree | What the published rules say | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Three-year Bologna bachelor's (EU) | UCLA accepts it for France and Germany. NYU Tandon accepts a Bologna Bachelor of Engineering with 180+ ECTS | Your exact ECTS total; for Germany, ask UCLA about its legacy sentence |
| Three-year BA, BSc or BCom from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal or Pakistan | UCLA asks for a master's in first or high second class. NYU Tandon does not accept three-year degrees | Whether you hold or will hold a master's, and its class |
| Engineering or architecture bachelor's from those countries | UCLA: first-class placement "may also be considered" | Your class placement on the degree certificate |
| UK or British-tradition honours degree (outside South Asia) | UCLA: honours in first or upper second class | That the certificate says "Honours" and the class |
| Three-year ordinary or pass degree | UCLA: "not acceptable" | Whether any school on your list publishes a different rule |
| Latin American licenciatura with the thesis still pending | UCLA expects "all degree requirements, including the thesis or professional examination" done before the term | Your expected completion date |
| Lateral-entry engineering degree after a diploma (India) | NYU Tandon: submit "marksheets and diploma for the Diploma in Engineering program in addition to the bachelor's degree credential" | That you have both sets of records |
Schools that publish only "equivalent" or "comparable" can still decide either way. What they decide for your specific degree is unknown until you ask. Stanford points you to a tool: "If you are unsure whether your international degree is considered equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree, we recommend using the degree equivalency tool offered by World Education Services (WES)." Stanford also says a WES evaluation "is not required during the application process". Our page on whether you need a WES evaluation before applying separates the two stages.
The countercase: a school that publishes a general rule may accept a three-year degree from a specific institution or with extra coursework. Rules elsewhere differ too: our pages on UBC master's admission with a three-year Indian degree and on MBA eligibility with a three-year bachelor's show other routes. Do not generalize either way from one school.
How to ask a school before applying
Berkeley says, "Please contact Graduate Admissions with questions." Ask the graduate admissions office, not a professor: the eligibility rule belongs to the graduate school. Keep the message short and factual.
Constructed example: an eligibility email
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Context (invented): an applicant with a three-year BSc and a two-year MSc.
Subject: Degree eligibility question, MS in Statistics, Fall 2027
Dear Graduate Admissions,
I plan to apply to the MS in Statistics for Fall 2027. I hold a three-year BSc in Mathematics (2022) and a two-year MSc in Statistics (2024) from a university in Nepal, awarded in first division. My transcripts list 120 and 80 credit hours.
Could you confirm whether this combination meets the graduate school's degree requirement? I can send transcripts if useful.
Thank you, Priya Adhikari
Why it works: it gives the degree names, durations, years, class and credits, and asks one question. It does not argue that the degree is equivalent. Keep the reply; it is your record if the question comes up later.
If you are not eligible yet
- Finish or add a master's at home if the school's rule asks for one, as UCLA's South Asia rule does. UCLA names a master's "awarded in first or high second class", not a diploma.
- Apply where the rule fits your degree. NYU Tandon's Bologna exception and UCLA's France and Germany rules show that rules differ even among US schools.
- Consider a pathway program only after reading its progression conditions. Our guide to graduate pathway programs in the USA covers what those offers mean.
- Do not explain eligibility in your SOP. If you are eligible, the committee reads your record. If you are not, a paragraph will not change the rule. Our SOP for MS in USA guide explains what to put in the statement instead.
Questions about three-year degrees and US master's programs
Is a 3-year bachelor's degree eligible for US masters programs?
At some schools. UCLA accepts a three-year Bologna degree from France or Germany. UCLA asks South Asian three-year graduates for a master's. NYU Tandon does not accept three-year degrees except Bologna engineering degrees with 180+ ECTS. Other schools decide case by case.
Do US universities require 16 years of education?
Not in those words, on the pages we checked. They ask for a degree "equivalent" or "comparable" to a US bachelor's, or publish country rules, as UCLA does.
Can I apply with a three-year degree from India?
At UCLA, only with a master's in first or high second class (with the exception for first-class bachelor's degrees in engineering and architecture). At NYU Tandon, no. At Stanford, Berkeley and UIUC, the published rule is "equivalent" or "comparable"; ask the school.
Does a WES evaluation make my three-year degree eligible?
No. An evaluation describes your degree. The school decides eligibility. Stanford recommends WES's equivalency tool for checking, and does not require an evaluation at application. Eligibility is a separate question from what to type in the GPA field, which should stay on your transcript's own scale.
English-medium proof is a separate question; the medium of instruction letter guide covers which schools accept one.
