SOP for MS in USA: What US Departments Actually Ask

An SOP for an MS in the USA is read by the department, often by faculty. At UC San Diego's computer science department, the MS review "is done by a committee consisting of several faculty members." Each program sets its own length: 8,000 characters including spaces at Stanford CS, one to two pages at UIUC, 250 to 1,000 words recommended at Columbia.

A template SOP built around family background, financial sponsors, a promise to return home and a grading-system explanation was not written for that reader. It spends a capped document on things the department did not ask. Our view: most of that has its own place in a US application, or is not asked for at all. Move it out, and spend the statement on your direction and your evidence. When the draft is ready, an SOP review reads it against a master's rubric.

Every university page quoted below was checked on October 29, 2026. Pages can change each cycle, so recheck your program before you submit. This page is about the document the department reads. It makes no claims about visa paperwork: the State Department's student-visa page returned a bot check when we tried to load it, so we did not use it.

Who reads a US master's SOP, in the departments' own words

US departments say plainly who reads the statement and what they look for:

  • UC San Diego CSE: GPA, GRE, TOEFL, letters "and statement of purpose all play a role." The Graduate Admissions Office first checks minimum standards. "For the MS program, the evaluation is done by a committee consisting of several faculty members." (UCSD CSE FAQ)
  • UC Berkeley Graduate Division: in its statement-of-purpose guide, "Faculty are the people who read these statements." It also says: "don't spend a great deal of time on autobiography." (Berkeley Graduate Division)
  • UIUC Siebel School of Computing: "Your statement will be evaluated for your conciseness, reasons for pursuing a graduate degree, leadership skills, and eloquence. Applicants to our M.S. or Ph.D. program will also be evaluated according to their scientific research interests." (UIUC Siebel)
  • Georgia Tech College of Computing: "the statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, test scores and GPA are all reviewed carefully." (Georgia Tech MSCS)

A faculty committee reading for "reasons for pursuing a graduate degree" and "research interests" is not reading for your family's occupations or your sponsor's income. None of the statement instructions these pages publish asks about finances, visas or plans to return home.

Where template paragraphs actually belong

Each row is a kind of paragraph you may have been told to include, and where a US application we checked actually puts it.

What the template puts in the SOPWhere it goes insteadSource
Financial proof and sponsor detailsAfter admission. Columbia: "International students will be asked to submit the financial statement after they are accepted into the program through the I-20 application process."Columbia CS MS FAQ
Your CGPA scale and class rankStanford: use the "additional information" section under the SOP "to briefly highlight the grading system used by your institution and your relative placement." Also: "Do not normalize your GPA."Stanford CS MS FAQ
Backlogs and repeated examsThe record shows them. Khoury asks Indian applicants for semester mark sheets, or a letter on institutional letterhead "indicating any retakes/backlogs."Northeastern Khoury
A list of programming languagesUChicago MS in Applied Data Science: a separate Programming Supplement, a PDF "of no more than two pages."UChicago MSADS
Online courses and job training not on your transcriptHarvard SEAS data science: the Additional Materials section, or "describe your training at one of your jobs or through self-study in your Statement of Purpose."Harvard SEAS MS Data Science
Your résumé, retoldNowhere. UChicago: "Do not restate your resume."UChicago MSADS
Family background and hardshipsA separate personal statement, where one is asked for. Berkeley's Personal History Statement invites "familial, cultural, economic, or social experiences." UIUC asks for a Personal Statement "within 250 words."Berkeley, UIUC
An argument that your three-year degree is equivalentThe eligibility rule decides it, not the SOP. NYU Tandon: "We do not accept undergraduate degrees that are equivalent to three years of study."NYU Tandon

Most rows come from one school's form. Not every application has an "additional information" box or a programming supplement. Where your form has no other place, a short sentence in the SOP is fine (see the countercase below).

Our view: treat the SOP as the one place in the application for your direction and your evidence. Anything the form collects elsewhere should be moved there. The basis is the departments' own instructions above: they describe faculty readers, ask for goals and reasons, and give financial and grading details their own slots.

The countercase: some context does belong in the statement. Columbia lists as a topic: "If there are any special circumstances that need to be brought to the attention of the Admission Committee, please include that information." Berkeley says: "If there is something important that happened to you that affected your grades, such as poverty, illness, or excessive work, state it." One or two plain sentences are enough. If you have backlogs to explain, see how to address backlogs in an SOP for a master's abroad.

US SOP limits and names: what the department sets

US programs do not share one format. Here is what nine programs publish. For more schools, see SOP requirements at 134 US universities.

Some professional schools number their questions; Cornell's hospitality master's lists four items in 500 words, as our SOP for MS in hospitality management shows.

Business-school specialized master's set essay prompts instead of one SOP; our SOP for MS in marketing compares USC, McCombs and Santa Clara.

Professional schools of international affairs set their own limits, from 500 to 700 words at Georgetown MSFS to 600 at SAIS; see the international relations statement of purpose sample.

Public policy schools set their own documents too; our MPP statement of purpose examples compare six of them, from a 300-word Harris statement to Princeton's two to three pages.

ProgramWhat it is calledPublished limit
Stanford CS MSStatement of purpose"no more than 8,000 characters in length which includes spaces in between words"
UIUC SiebelAcademic Statement of Purpose, plus Personal Statement"Generally" one to two pages; Personal Statement "within 250 words"
Columbia CS MSPersonal Statement250 to 1,000 words recommended; going over will not hurt, Columbia says
CMU School of Computer ScienceStatement of Purpose"a concise one- or two-page essay," with program-specific requirements in the application
Northeastern KhouryStatement of purpose1,000 words, "a guideline and not a hard limit"
Harvard SEAS MS Data ScienceStatement of Purpose"about 1,000 words"
UChicago MS in Applied Data ScienceCandidate statement"should not exceed 700 words"
Northwestern MS in Artificial IntelligencePersonal Statement in two sections500 words and 300 words
CMU Information Networking InstituteEssays, plus a video300 words each

One trap at Stanford: the same FAQ also says the statement "must be no more than two pages in length (no more than 8,000 words)." Eight thousand words would be far longer than two pages, so that line reads as a slip for characters. Plan for 8,000 characters, the figure the FAQ gives in its application instructions.

The last two rows are not single statements at all. Our guides to the SOP for MS in artificial intelligence and the SOP for MS in cybersecurity cover those formats.

SOP vs personal statement in US applications

US schools use the two names in three different ways:

  • Two documents, two jobs. UIUC asks for an Academic Statement of Purpose and a 250-word Personal Statement. Berkeley asks for a Statement of Purpose and a Personal History Statement, and says the second "should not duplicate the Statement of Purpose."
  • One document called a personal statement. Columbia's CS MS asks only for a Personal Statement, which it defines around your past experiences and how they shaped your growth; our CS statement of purpose guide quotes the definition. Its suggested topics include your reasons for the program, career goals and "What do you hope to gain from this program?"
  • One document called a statement of purpose. Stanford, CMU, Northeastern and Harvard SEAS ask for one statement of purpose.

If a school asks for two, put the academic case in the SOP and the personal background in the other. If it asks for one, it may be called either name; read the prompt, not the label.

Constructed before and after: a template opening rewritten

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Both versions are invented. Neither is from a real application, and no outcome is claimed.

Context (invented): Rahul Verma has a four-year B.Tech in computer science and two years as a backend developer at an invented logistics company in Pune. He is applying to coursework MS programs in computer science.

Template version (constructed, 143 words):

Respected Sir/Madam, I am writing to express my keen interest in pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Science at your esteemed university. My father is a businessman and my mother is a homemaker, and they have always supported my education. Since childhood I have been passionate about computers and technology. I completed my B.Tech in Computer Science with a CGPA of 8.1 out of 10, which is equivalent to a 3.6 GPA. Your university is ranked among the best in the world and has world-class faculty and infrastructure. My parents will sponsor my education and have sufficient funds. After completing my MS, I will return to India and serve my country by joining a reputed company. I am confident that I will be an asset to your university. I humbly request you to consider my application. Thanking you, Yours faithfully, Rahul Verma.

What each sentence spends:

Template sentenceWhat to do with it
"Respected Sir/Madam … Yours faithfully"Cut. An SOP is not a letter.
Parents' occupationsCut, or move to a personal history statement if the school asks for one.
"Since childhood I have been passionate…"Cut. Berkeley asks you not to "spend a great deal of time on autobiography."
CGPA "equivalent to a 3.6 GPA"Cut the conversion. Stanford says "Do not normalize your GPA"; use the grading-system box where there is one.
Ranking and "world-class" praiseReplace with one named course or lab you checked.
Sponsor and fundsCut. Columbia collects the financial statement after admission.
"Return to India and serve my country"Replace with a specific next role.
"An asset to your university"Cut. Show the evidence instead.

Rewrite (constructed, 154 words):

I want to build data systems that stay fast when the load is ten times the usual. For two years at Kestrel Logistics, a delivery company in Pune, I have worked on the service that answers parcel-tracking lookups. During last year's festival season, those lookups slowed from under a second to nearly a minute. I traced the delay to one query that scanned every tracking event of the day. I added a composite index and split the events table by date, and the lookups recovered. That fix taught me how little of my B.Tech covered database internals. I took one databases course and nothing on storage engines or query planning. I am applying to a coursework MS so that I can take database systems and distributed systems in my first year. After the degree, I want to work as a backend engineer on a data infrastructure team, where a slow query means late deliveries.

The rewrite spends every sentence on direction, evidence or the gap the degree closes. The family, the funds and the grading conversion are still true. They just live elsewhere in the application.

Writing for another country instead?

Other countries use different documents, and some ask for a separate statement for the student visa. Our guides cover those separately: SOP vs LOE vs study plan for Canada, Australia master's personal statement or visa SOP, and how a written statement and a visa interview must match. For adapting your writing style to a US reader, see international students writing an American SOP.

Questions about US master's statements

How long is an SOP for MS in USA?

There is no national rule. Among the single statements in our table, published limits run from 700 words (UChicago MSADS) to about 1,000 words (Harvard SEAS, Northeastern), with Stanford at 8,000 characters and UIUC and CMU at one to two pages. Use your program's own number.

What font and format should I use?

Follow the program's format if it gives one. Columbia says, "If possible, the following format is preferred": margins of at least one inch, double-spaced text, "10-point Arial or 12-point Times New Roman," and your name in the header or footer of every page. Many programs give no format; then a plain, readable layout is enough.

Can I send the same SOP to every US university?

Not unchanged. Limits and prompts differ, as the table shows. Keep the core story and rewrite the program-specific parts. Reusing one SOP for many schools shows what to change.

Should I mention my visa or my plan to return home?

Not in the statement the department reads, unless its prompt asks. None of the statement instructions on the pages we checked asks for it. A career goal can name the country where you want to work, if that is part of your plan.

Should I convert my CGPA to a 4.0 GPA in the SOP?

No, if the program says not to. Stanford says "Do not normalize your GPA" and asks you to explain your grading system in the "additional information" section instead. If you are deciding whether to buy an SOP from a writing service, read the attestation you will sign first.

For the first paragraph itself, see how to start a statement of purpose for a master's, with six constructed openings by applicant situation.

If your list includes Switzerland, the EPFL statement of purpose asks for academic background, career strategy and objectives in at most 1,000 words.

A European joint master's asks for something else: an Erasmus Mundus motivation letter is set by each consortium, often at 350 to 500 words.

If Canada is also on your list, the SOP for masters in Canada: two annotated samples shows how its statements differ.

For one department that publishes its own numbers, see the CMU MS CS acceptance rate across 17 master's programs.

If your grades are the worry, check the GPA numbers US CS departments publish before you shortlist.

B.Pharm graduates applying to US pharmaceutical sciences programs should pick a track first; see the SOP for MS in pharmaceutical sciences.

If your degree ended a year or two before you apply, explain a gap year in your SOP in two sentences, not a paragraph.
