Spring Intake Master's in the USA: The CPT Problem

US master's programs that admit in spring set early deadlines: USC Viterbi closed Spring 2027 on October 15 and Stevens' full-time master's date is November 1. For an F-1 student the bigger cost is the first summer: CPT normally needs one full academic year of enrollment first.

Our view: for an F-1 student, spring intake is not a softer version of fall. A January starter usually reaches May with one semester done, which is not enough for curricular practical training (CPT) that summer. The only exception in the regulation is a graduate program that requires immediate CPT. Since August 2026, federal guidance, as universities describe it, has also narrowed CPT to training the curriculum requires. This page quotes both rules, lists six schools' Spring 2027 dates, and gives you a test for when spring still makes sense.

Every regulation, federal, international-office and admissions page quoted below was checked on October 29, 2026. CPT guidance changed twice in August 2026 and may change again, so confirm your program with its international office before you commit.

The one-academic-year rule

The rule sits in the federal F-1 regulation, 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10). Paragraph (f)(10) opens:

"Practical training may be authorized to an F-1 student who has been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis, in an approved SEVP-certified college, university, conservatory, or seminary for one full academic year."

That sentence covers both kinds of practical training, CPT and optional practical training (OPT). The exception appears only in the CPT subparagraph, (f)(10)(i):

"Exceptions to the one academic year requirement are provided for students enrolled in graduate studies that require immediate participation in curricular practical training."

ICE's practical training page puts the exception in plain words: "When you enroll at the graduate level, your designated school official (DSO) may authorize CPT during your first semester if your program requires this type of experience. Ask your DSO for details."

How schools count the year varies. Georgetown's international office says on its CPT page: "Students become eligible after two semesters of full time in person study unless their degree requires earlier training." Your DSO, not the admissions office, applies the rule to you.

What changed for CPT in August 2026

The one-year rule is in the regulation. The narrower reading of CPT comes from August 2026 guidance to schools, which we could not retrieve directly. Two universities describe the same federal messages:

  • UMBC (notice posted September 4, 2026, on its international office updates page): SEVP sent broadcast messages on August 12 and August 24, 2026. "Collectively, the guidance states that CPT is permitted only where an established curriculum requires all students, regardless of citizenship, to participate in practical training."
  • CU Boulder (international office notice, updated August 31, 2026): "at this time ISSS is only able to process CPT requests for students enrolled in programs of study in which practical training is required for completion of the student's degree or major (not minor), as specified in the university catalog."

For a spring starter this stacks two conditions. You need the year of enrollment, or a program that requires CPT immediately. Under current guidance at these schools, you also need a program where practical training is required for every student. An optional summer internship for course credit fails the second test whenever you started. Our CPT program check covers how to test a curriculum, and the US student visa rule-status guide tracks which rules are in force.

The first-summer calendar for a January start

Constructed example: fall 2026 start versus January 2027 start

Constructed example, written by us, not a real student's record. Context (invented): two F-1 students in the same three-semester, full-time master's that requires a summer internship of every student. One starts in fall 2026, one in January 2027. Neither program has an immediate-CPT requirement. We count a full academic year as two semesters, as Georgetown's page does.

Point in timeFall 2026 starterJanuary 2027 starter
End of fall 20261 semester doneNot yet enrolled
May 20272 semesters done: one full academic year1 semester done
Summer 2027CPT can be requested for the required internshipNot yet eligible
December 2027Graduates after 3 semesters2 semesters done: now eligible
May 2028Already graduatedGraduates after 3 semesters

The January starter's only summer inside the program is summer 2027, and on this calendar it comes before eligibility. In a three-semester program, that student never gets a summer on CPT at all. A four-semester program would reach summer 2028 with eligibility. That is the line to check on any spring offer.

Spring 2027 deadlines we verified

Each row was opened on the school's own page on October 29, 2026. Two of the six dates had already passed by then.

School and programSpring 2027 deadlineInternational or domesticStatus on Oct 29
USC Viterbi, master'sOctober 15, 11:59 PM Pacific Time, under "SPRING 2027"One date listedPassed
CU Boulder, MS Mechanical EngineeringInternational September 15, 2026; domestic October 1, 2026; "Late applications are not accepted"SeparatePassed
Stevens, full-time master'sNovember 1 (preferred deadline; the page states no year)One date; rolling after itOpen
CSUSB, graduateApplication November 1, 2026; documents November 30, 2026International admissions pageOpen
Bowling Green State, graduateNovember 6, 2026, with all credentials on fileInternational deadlineOpen
Ramapo College, MBA, MSAC, MSDS, MSCS, MSAM, MSN, MASEDecember 1, listed under "Spring 2027"One date listedOpen

Two notes from the pages themselves. Stevens says its programs admit on a "rolling" basis and that "Students requiring an F1 Visa are strongly encouraged to apply by the preferred deadlines to allow time for visa processing." CSUSB adds "Some programs may have different deadlines." Treat each date as the latest safe date, not a target.

The CU Boulder row also shows how the two rules meet at one school. Its MS in Mechanical Engineering takes spring starters. It is not on the CU Boulder international office's list of programs that SEVP has on record as requiring practical experience; that list names other engineering degrees, such as the MS in Environmental Engineering, Global Engineering emphasis only. So a spring starter in that ME program should not plan on CPT under the current notice.

When spring intake is still the right call

Run these five checks on the spring offer. Spring is a sound choice if check 1 passes, or if checks 2 and 3 both pass. Checks 4 and 5 are part of the decision either way.

  1. You do not need a first-summer internship. You are a US citizen or permanent resident, you are on a research or thesis track, or the summer will go to coursework. Pass: your plan has no off-campus summer work in 2027.
  2. The program is long enough. Count semesters from January. Pass: there is a summer after your second semester and before graduation.
  3. The curriculum requires the training. Pass: the catalog requires practical training of every student in your program, and the international office confirms in writing that it can authorize CPT for that requirement. If you want CPT in your first summer, the confirmation must say your program qualifies for the immediate-participation exception.
  4. Day-1 CPT is a reason for more scrutiny, not less. A program sold mainly on work from the first term needs the Cash Cow Index run on it. Our Trine day-1 CPT case study shows what that scoring looks like.
  5. Count the cost of waiting. If a fall 2027 start costs you a year of salary or a funded place, spring may still win. Price the lost summer honestly in that comparison.

The countercase: a spring start can be the better plan when the summer has another use. UMBC notes that on-campus employment "remains permitted for F-1 students up to 20 hours per week while school is in session, and full-time during official school breaks." A January starter may be able to work on campus full-time or take courses in summer 2027; confirm the school's rule for new students. If your goal is the degree, not the internship, spring costs you little.

For PhD applicants the question is different: a spring PhD start depends on whether the department actually reviews spring applicants. See whether a spring PhD intake is really open.

Writing the SOP for a spring start

Our recommendation: leave the start term out of the statement unless it explains something the reader would otherwise question. One example is a December graduation that makes January the natural start. Another is a course sequence the program says works from spring. Do not write that you chose spring for an internship; under the CPT rules above, that reads as a plan the program cannot support.

Constructed example: a timing sentence

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement.

Weak: "I am applying for the spring intake because I could not finish my applications for fall and I want to start working in the US as soon as possible."

Revised: "I complete my bachelor's degree in December 2026, and a January start lets me take the program's first-semester systems sequence directly after my final-year operating systems course."

The revised sentence (27 words) gives a reason tied to the curriculum and says nothing about work authorization. The weak version tells the reader the plan was a fallback.

Questions about spring intake for a US master's

Is spring intake good for an MS in the US?

It is good for the degree and weak for the first summer. If you need a summer 2027 internship on CPT, spring intake fails unless your program requires immediate CPT and the DSO confirms it. If you do not, spring intake is a normal start.

Can I do CPT in my first semester?

Only if your graduate program requires immediate participation in CPT. ICE says your DSO "may authorize CPT during your first semester if your program requires this type of experience."

Does a January start also delay OPT?

The one-full-academic-year sentence opens paragraph (f)(10), which covers both CPT and OPT, and the immediate-participation exception sits only in the CPT subparagraph. Ask your DSO how it applies to pre-completion OPT in your first summer.

Are spring 2027 deadlines still open?

At four of the six schools in our table, yes on October 29, 2026: Stevens, CSUSB, Bowling Green State and Ramapo. USC Viterbi and CU Boulder Mechanical Engineering had closed.
