Fulbright Italy Essays: 50 Lines, Named Universities

Fulbright Italy's self-placed call for 2027–28 asks for a study/research objective of at most 50 lines (12 pt, single-spaced) that must name the US universities you chose and explain why, plus a 2-page personal statement. Both are in English and due Monday, November 30, 2026, at 23:59.

Italy is where the usual Fulbright rule flips. The IIE form's only university rule bans names in the personal statement, and Colombia bans them in the objective too. Italy's applicants place themselves, so the objective must name and justify each university. That makes it a compressed US statement of purpose.

Every rule below comes from the U.S.–Italy Fulbright Commission's Self-Placed in All Disciplines page, its call and its copy of the IIE instructions, all checked on October 31, 2026. Eligibility, exclusions and funding are on the commission's page; in one line, the call is for Italian graduates who have applied, or are applying, to US master's or PhD programs on their own. The commission's instructions add one rule that governs everything below: "In caso di discrepanza tra le istruzioni in inglese e in italiano, seguire esclusivamente le indicazioni in italiano." (If the English and Italian instructions differ, follow only the Italian.)

What you upload, and in what language

The instructions say: "Tutti i documenti scritti dal candidato devono essere redatti in inglese" (every document the candidate writes must be in English). The written pieces are:

DocumentLimitItalian rule that matters
Study/research objectiveMax 50 lines, 12 pt, single-spacedMust name your chosen US universities and say why
Personal statementMax 2 pages, 12 pt, single-spacedFive guiding questions; no US university names
Questionnaire Addendum to the Personal StatementFour questions, max 250 words eachUploaded under Country Specific Materials
Writing sampleThesis summary max 10 pages, or an essay of 2 to 5 pagesBibliography counts inside the limit
CVMax 4 pagesUS-style professional CV: "Non è accettato il formato europeo" (the European format is not accepted)

The commission also says how many universities to apply to: its call "raccomanda vivamente di presentare domanda ad almeno tre istituzioni" (strongly recommends applying to at least three institutions).

The objective: 50 lines that must name universities

The Italian addition to the IIE prompt, in full:

"Descrivere il proprio progetto di studio. Il candidato dovrà dedicare particolare attenzione alla stesura di questo documento, elemento fondamentale della Application su cui si soffermeranno gli esperti ai fini della valutazione della candidatura."

(Describe your study project. Give this document particular care: it is a fundamental part of the application, and the experts will dwell on it when evaluating your candidacy.) It then sets the limit, "massimo 50 righe, carattere 12, interlinea singola", and three requirements:

  • "Compilare il documento in forma narrativa;"
  • "Delineare con chiarezza gli obiettivi di studio negli Stati Uniti e descrivere come questi si inquadrano nei progetti di carriera accademica o professionale del candidato al rientro in Italia;"
  • "Menzionare le università statunitensi scelte e spiegare i motivi della propria selezione."

(Write it as a narrative; set out your US study objectives clearly and how they fit your academic or professional career plans on your return to Italy; name the US universities you chose and explain why you selected them.)

Three jobs, then: a narrative, a plan that ends in Italy, and a reasoned university list.

How much fits in 50 lines? The instructions set the size (12 pt) and the spacing (single) but not the font, the paper or the margins. By our arithmetic, setting text in Times New Roman 12 pt on A4 with 2.5 cm margins gives about 13 to 14 words per line, so 50 lines hold roughly 550 words if you leave a blank line between paragraphs and roughly 670 if you do not. That is just under one A4 page. Lay out your own draft in your own template and count the lines before you upload.

Our view: treat the 50 lines as a US statement of purpose with the fit section built in. The commission's experts read it, and every university on your list is also reading an SOP from you; the documents should tell the same story. The countercase: a PhD applicant with six or more programs cannot justify each one in 50 lines. Group them by the shared feature you need (for example, "three programs with a rotation system in computational biology") and name the strongest two or three individually.

The personal statement: two pages, five questions

The IIE prompt asks for "a narrative statement describing how you have achieved your current goals" and says "Do not mention specific U.S. universities at which you would like to study." Italy adds five guiding questions and a 2-page limit, and says the personal statement "non è una ripetizione del CV/resume" (is not a repeat of the CV). The committee weighs it "particolarmente per coloro che accederanno alla seconda fase delle interviste" (especially for those who reach the interview stage).

The Fulbright personal statement guide works through the five questions and the return-home paragraph. Two things are specific to Italy:

  • The Questionnaire Addendum carries four more questions at 250 words each, on community contribution, a formative event, how you funded your studies (including whether you are the first in your family at university), and how you see yourself "as a cultural ambassador of your country". Do not spend personal-statement space on material the Addendum asks for directly.
  • The interview draws on it. The call describes an interview of about ten minutes, in English, on Zoom, that "potrebbe prendere spunto anche da quanto scritto dal candidato nel proprio Personal Statement" (may also draw on what you wrote in the personal statement). Its listed topics include your role as a cultural ambassador and your contribution to Italy–US relations "attraverso il proprio progetto di ricerca" (through your own research project).

The other written pieces: thesis summary and GPA field

Writing sample. You choose between two options. The first is a "Sintesi della tesi di laurea relativa all’ultimo titolo conseguito" (a summary of the thesis for your most recent degree), of at most ten pages including any bibliography, with a cover page showing your name, the thesis title, the academic year, the date and the "voto di laurea", and your supervisor(s). The second is an essay of two to five pages in the field you will study. Our recommendation: if your thesis is in the field of your objective, summarize it, because the objective will refer to it; if you are changing field, write the essay.

GPA field. The form asks for your cumulative GPA. Italy's note says the calculation "dovrà essere effettuato sulla media dei voti degli esami e non sul voto di laurea" (must be based on the average of your exam marks, not on the final degree mark). For the highest possible GPA, the instructions say "Informazione non rilevante per la candidatura. Scrivere 4.0." (Not relevant to the application. Write 4.0.) For the degree name, "Specificare in italiano il titolo conseguito" (state your degree title in Italian). The Italian grades guide covers how the 30 and 110 scales read on your separate US university applications.

Plagiarism check: the 10% line

Italy's copy of the IIE plagiarism agreement, which you must accept to submit, says:

"Application materials will be processed using software to help identify any instance of plagiarism. Plagiarism in any part of your Application will result in your disqualification from participating in the Fulbright Foreign Student Program."

The commission adds, in Italian: "Si fa presente che rilevamenti superiori al 10% anche solo in un singolo documento all’interno dell’intera Application sono motivo di squalifica dal programma." (Matches above 10%, even in a single document of the application, are grounds for disqualification.) The definition, it says, covers "tutte le parti dell’Application, compreso il Personal Statement e le Lettere di Referenze" (every part, including the personal statement and the reference letters), and reference letters "devono riportare contenuti originali e personalizzati per ciascun referente" (must contain original content, personalized for each referee). The call places this check in the final phase, run by IIE.

What the documents do not say: what the software compares your text against. They do not say whether your own university SOPs count. Our recommendation: write the Fulbright objective and personal statement as new text. Reuse your ideas, your structure and your facts across documents, not long identical passages, and never adapt a published sample essay. Tell each referee the rule, because two letters built from the same draft would breach it.

Constructed example: a 50-line objective for an MS in data science

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement.

Context (invented): Giulia Ferri, a Politecnico engineering graduate whose thesis forecast emergency-room arrivals, applying to three US MS in Data Science programs. The universities are placeholders (A, B, C); in your own objective, use the real program names and features you have checked on each university's site.

The text is 454 words in nine paragraphs. By our layout estimate (Times New Roman 12 pt, single spacing, A4, 2.5 cm margins), it sets to 34 lines without blank lines, or 42 with a blank line between paragraphs, inside the 50-line limit.

I want to spend the next two years learning to build forecasting models that a public hospital can trust, and then to bring those models back to the regional health service in Lombardy. My objective is a Master of Science in Data Science with a strong statistics core and a capstone carried out with a real organization.

My engineering degree at the Politecnico gave me programming and optimization, but my thesis showed me where it stops. I built a model to predict emergency-room arrivals at a hospital in my city, and it was accurate on average and wrong on the days that mattered. I did not have the time-series and causal-inference training to understand why, or the vocabulary to explain the model's limits to the clinicians who would have used it. The programs I chose are built around exactly this gap: two years, a statistics sequence taken alongside machine learning, and a capstone in which a team delivers a model to an outside client.

I have applied to three programs, chosen for the same reasons.

University A's MS in Data Science requires two semesters of statistical modeling before the machine-learning electives, and its capstone partners include public-sector health organizations. This is the order in which I need to learn.

University B's program offers a concentration in health data science, with a course on causal inference from observational records. Emergency-room data is observational, and my thesis failed precisely where causal questions began.

University C's MS includes a year-long practicum and a required course on communicating models to non-technical decision-makers. My thesis taught me that a model nobody understands is not used.

In each program, I would take the same three steps: complete the statistics sequence in the first year, choose a capstone or practicum on hospital or public-health data, and write my final project as a tool that a hospital planning office could run without me.

When I return to Italy, I plan to apply for an analyst post in the planning office of a regional health agency, the kind of office that supplied my thesis data. My first project would be a forecasting model for emergency-room demand that reports its own uncertainty, so that planners know when not to trust it. I also want to share what I learn: I will offer the method and the code to the Politecnico's health-engineering course, where students now graduate with the same gap I had.

The Fulbright program matters to me for a second reason. My thesis stalled for three months while I waited for access to anonymized records. In the United States I want to learn how public agencies open their data to researchers, and bring that practice back with me as well as the models.

How it meets the three Italian requirements:

  • Narrative: told in order, from the thesis that failed on the days that mattered to the job she wants afterwards. No bullets, no headings.
  • Objectives and the return to Italy: paragraph one states the degree; the return paragraph names a post type, an office type, a first project and a way to share the method.
  • Named universities with reasons: each university gets one feature, and each feature ties back to the thesis problem. The reasons are the same three needs stated in paragraph two, so the list reads as a consequence of the plan, not as a list of famous names.

It leaves out rankings, praise for the United States and funding. The personal statement and Addendum carry her background.

Questions about the Fulbright Italy essays

Do I name universities in the Fulbright Italy study objective?

Yes. Italy's instructions say "Menzionare le università statunitensi scelte e spiegare i motivi della propria selezione." The personal statement is the opposite: the IIE prompt bans university names there.

How long is the Fulbright Italy study/research objective?

At most 50 lines, 12 pt, single-spaced. By our arithmetic, that is roughly 550 to 670 words, depending on paragraph spacing.

Is the Fulbright Italy personal statement one page or two?

Two pages at most, 12 pt, single-spaced, guided by five questions. The Questionnaire Addendum adds four questions at a maximum of 250 words each.

When is the Fulbright Italy 2027–28 deadline?

Monday, November 30, 2026, at 23:59, for both parts of the application, according to the commission's page checked on October 31, 2026. The Fulbright objective is not your university statement; for that, see the US PhD statement of purpose for European applicants.
