US PhD Statement of Purpose for European Applicants

A US PhD statement of purpose is not a European PhD position letter: use your master's thesis as evidence, name faculty for direction, keep funding short.

US PhD Statement of Purpose for European Applicants

A US PhD statement of purpose (SOP) is not a European PhD position letter. A US doctoral program can admit you to a department rather than to a project, as Arizona's physics department states below, so the statement should show a research direction and how you think, using your master's thesis as the evidence. It should not promise a fixed project you will execute for one supervisor.

Where a European doctorate is an advertised job (a project, one supervisor, a cover letter that maps your skills to the vacancy), the letter that fits it is the wrong template for a US department. Sent to a US committee, it reads as narrow: you are applying to a project nobody advertised. This page shows the difference, how to turn a Bologna master's thesis into the research section, and how to name faculty without implying an agreement that does not exist. When the draft is ready, start a PhD statement of purpose review and choose the PhD SOP rubric.

Every university and commission page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. Deadlines and rules change each cycle, so reopen each page before you submit.

The University of Arizona's physics department states the US model plainly in its graduate FAQ: "Admissions decisions are made for our department as a whole, and are not specifically connected to any particular research group." It adds: "You are never admitted for the sole purpose of working with any particular faculty member."

Your degree also changes less than you think. UCLA's academic records page says applicants from France and Germany "who studied under the Bologna Process should present the bachelor's (three year) degree or the master's (3 + 2) degree". UC Berkeley's requirements page asks graduates outside the US to "hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree". So a US PhD does not require your master's. But if you have one, the master's thesis is the strongest evidence in your file. UCLA's page names no separate rule for Spain, Italy or Greece. For the five-year degrees, see laurea, Diplom and five-year degrees as master's equivalents.

Our view: write the US statement as an argument for admitting a researcher, not as a bid for a project. The basis is the Arizona rule above and Berkeley's description of the SOP: it "should describe your aptitude and motivation to enter the program" and "is a good place to share your academic plans, research interests, and future career goals". Plans and interests, not a work package.

The countercase: some US programs let doctoral applicants line up a principal investigator before they apply. Penn Engineering's graduate admissions FAQ says "you don't need to contact Penn faculty prior to applying" but that "doctoral applicants may choose to do so to identify a principal investigator for research". If a professor has invited you to apply to their lab, the statement can lean closer to a project. Check the program's own page; do not assume.

Your master's thesis is your research section

If your Bologna master's thesis had a supervisor, months of work and a defense, it is research evidence. Listed in one line ("Master's thesis: Topological phases in cold-atom systems, grade 10/10"), it shows nothing of your reasoning, and a US reader wants the reasoning.

Give the thesis four things:

  1. The question you tried to answer, in one sentence a physicist in another subfield could follow.
  2. The decision you made about method, and why you rejected the alternative.
  3. The result, including what did not work.
  4. The next question the thesis left you with. This is the bridge to the PhD.

A position letter does not need point 4, because the project is already defined. A US statement does. The next question is what makes your direction credible without a fixed plan. Our thesis abstract to SOP paragraph guide shows the conversion step by step.

Faculty fit without a supervisor contract

Name two or three faculty members whose work fits your next question, and say what in their work connects to yours. Do not write "Professor X has agreed to supervise me" unless they have, in writing, and the program allows it. Do not write as if one name is the reason you apply; Arizona's FAQ tells you the committee is department-wide.

The European habit to drop: the paragraph that matches your skills, line by line, to one person's lab. That is the advertised-position letter. In a US statement, the paragraph should match your question to the department's strengths, with the names as evidence. If you want to email faculty first, see how to find and contact a PhD supervisor.

Funding: say less than you think

The statement is not a funding request. One sentence is enough if you hold or are applying for outside funding. Our PhD funding awareness guide explains why.

If you are a Spanish, Italian or Greek citizen, your national Fulbright commission runs its own competition with its own documents. These are separate from the US statement:

CommissionWho it funds (as stated)Deadline statedDocument to note
Fulbright Italy, All Disciplines (2027–28)Master's or Ph.D.; funds "esclusivamente il primo anno accademico"Monday, November 30, 2026, 23:59Its IIE Instructions: "Tutti i documenti scritti dal candidato devono essere redatti in inglese"
Fulbright Greece, graduate studies (2027–28)"a master's degree—including MA/Ph.D. track programs"; excludes "Ph.D.-only degrees"November 15, 2026, 23:59 EET (registration closed October 15, 2026)Minimum GPA "8.0 (out of 10.00)"

Read the Greek row carefully: the graduate grant excludes Ph.D.-only degrees, so a Greek applicant to a direct-entry US PhD should check eligibility before building a plan around it. Spain's call for 2027–28 has already closed; the next one is a future cycle. The Spanish project is written in Spanish, in three parts the call names (Objetivo, Importancia, Motivación). It is not your US statement. Our Fulbright Spain proyecto de beca guide and Fulbright Italy study objective guide cover those documents.

Constructed example: a Greek physicist's opening and research paragraph

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Eleni Papadaki, MSc in physics from a Greek university, thesis on noise in superconducting qubits, applying to US PhD programs in condensed matter.

The position-letter version (80 words):

I am applying for a PhD position in your group in order to carry out a project on decoherence in superconducting qubits. My MSc in Physics (grade 9.1/10) gave me strong skills in cryogenics, Python and numerical simulation, which match the requirements of this project. During my thesis I measured flux noise in transmon devices. I am confident that I can complete the project within four years and deliver publishable results. I would be grateful to join your excellent group.

The US statement version (107 words):

I want to understand where flux noise in superconducting circuits comes from, because it limits how long qubits stay coherent. In my MSc thesis I measured noise spectra in transmon devices and expected a single surface-spin model to fit them. It did not: two of five devices showed a second slope at low frequency. I chose to test a two-population model rather than add free parameters, and it fit four devices. The fifth still does not fit, and that is the question I want to pursue. Professors in your department working on materials loss and on noise spectroscopy approach it from two directions I need to learn.

What changed, and why. The first version answers a vacancy that does not exist ("your group", "this project", "within four years"). The second opens with a question, shows a method decision and its reason, admits what failed, and ends with the next question. Faculty appear as directions to learn from, not as a contract. In a real draft, name the faculty. The grade moved out of the statement; it is on the transcript. The physics and the results are invented for this example.

Checklist for a European applicant

  1. Have you removed "PhD position", "your group" and "this project" unless a professor invited you?
  2. Does the thesis paragraph give the question, decision, result and next question?
  3. Are two or three faculty named for direction, with no claimed agreement?
  4. Is your degree named once, as printed, with no invented US equivalent?
  5. Is funding one sentence at most?
  6. Is your Fulbright document kept separate, in the language and format its commission sets?
  7. Did you follow each program's own length limit? See how many PhD programs to apply to for tailoring time. If you are also applying in Europe, see what to keep and rewrite in one PhD SOP for multiple countries.

Engineering applicants can compare a full electrical engineering PhD statement, annotated paragraph by paragraph.

Area-studies applicants should also read the Middle East studies PhD statement on language and source skills.
