Georgetown Law Acceptance Rate 2025: Medians and Essays

Georgetown Law's acceptance rate was 15.75% for the class that entered in fall 2025: 2,193 offers from 13,924 completed applications, according to its ABA Standard 509 report. The class medians were a 171 LSAT and a 3.93 GPA.

That is the lowest rate in the four 509 reports we pulled, and the reason is plain from the table below. Applications rose by about 2,600 in one year and offers fell. The median LSAT did not move at all. Georgetown's FAQ now says it received "more than 14,000 applications" for fall 2026, so the pressure has not eased. The 509 data for the fall 2026 class has not been published yet.

Our reading: Georgetown's numbers set a range. They do not rank you inside it. The LSAT has sat at 171 for four straight years, and the middle half of the class spans 166 to 173. Thousands of applicants have scores inside that band. What separates them is the part of the file Georgetown deliberately leaves open: an untopiced personal statement, an optional statement, and six optional 250-word responses.

The 509 trend, 2022–2025

Each column is one ABA "First Year Class" (the class that started law school that fall). Figures are for the whole class, full-time and evening combined, unless marked.

Three things in this table matter more than the headline rate.

The LSAT median is flat and the GPA median is climbing. It went 3.86, 3.91, 3.92, 3.93 while the LSAT stayed at 171. The 25th-percentile GPA rose from 3.63 to 3.75. If your GPA is below the 25th percentile, do not assume an old profile describes the current class.

The volume jump went into selectivity, not class size. From fall 2024 to fall 2025, completed applications rose about 23% (11,309 to 13,924) and offers fell about 4% (2,276 to 2,193). The 1L class grew by only 17 students. More applicants competed for a slightly smaller number of offers.

Yield is about 28%. The 2025 report gives 28.68% as the enrollment rate from offers. Georgetown needs roughly three and a half offers for each seat it fills. That fact sits behind its rolling admissions and its advice to apply early.

Full-time and evening are two different numerical pictures

Georgetown's 509 splits the class by division, and the gap is large enough to matter.

Those 33 no-test enrollees fit a real rule. Georgetown lets evening-only applicants without a valid LSAT apply test-optional, and full-time applicants need a valid LSAT, GRE or GMAT. The details, including the duty to notify admissions if you later register for a test, are in Georgetown's evening JD test-optional route. Our position is simple: choose the division you intend to attend. Georgetown says its evening program "is designed with students who have full-time jobs or other full-time commitments in mind." It is not a side door into the day class, and a test-optional file still has to show you can do the work.

Folklore to drop

• "Georgetown is a 20% school." That was true of the fall 2024 class (20.13%). For fall 2025 the figure was 15.75%.
• "The fee is $85." The 509 report lists $85. Georgetown's current application requirements page for fall 2027 says "A nonrefundable $90 fee must be submitted at the time you apply." Trust the current page for this cycle.
• "The LSAT matters more than any other test." Georgetown's FAQ says the LSAT, GRE and GMAT "are all treated equally" and that it does "not use a converter." Only 12 enrollees in the fall 2025 class used the GRE, so it is a real but small route.
• "There's a hard March deadline." Georgetown calls March 1, 2027 a "Strongly Recommended deadline." It is still a recommendation inside a rolling process, so a file completed in November is read at a different point than one completed in February.

What Georgetown asks you to write

What the numbers imply about the essays

Here is the argument, stated as our opinion and grounded in the data above.

1. Inside the 166–173 band, the essays are what the committee has left to read. Georgetown says it uses no "numerical cutoffs" and that its "review of any score is not mechanical." With the LSAT median fixed at 171 for four years and 13,924 completed files, many applicants will look alike on paper. What they wrote is where they differ.
2. An open topic punishes the generic draft. Georgetown gives no prompt and no length cap, so the instructions do nothing to push you away from the statement anyone could have written. Run a substitution test: if an applicant with a similar resume could sign a paragraph unchanged, rewrite that paragraph. Our personal statement clichés guide lists the usual offenders.
3. One letter completes your file, so your writing may be read early. The FAQ says that "once we receive one letter of recommendation, your application will be considered complete and sent to the Admissions Committee for review," unless you ask Georgetown to hold it. Under rolling admissions, submitting a weak draft on time is a real risk, not a formality.
4. The optional containers are Georgetown's version of a "why us" essay. Georgetown publishes no why-Georgetown prompt (see the why-this-law-school essay map). The optional statement and the 250-word responses are where material that the personal statement had no room for can go. Two strong responses beat five that repeat the statement.
5. Early Decision changes your aid timing, not your essay. Georgetown says ED admits "will not receive their financial aid information before their binding admissions decision." If you need to know the aid package before committing, Georgetown itself recommends Regular Decision. An ED applicant who is deferred or waitlisted "is no longer bound."

A decision procedure for this week

1. Place yourself against the fall 2025 medians for the division you want, full-time or evening. Use the 509 row above, not an older profile.
2. Decide on ED or RD based on aid, not on hope. Read Georgetown's ED terms on its application process page and treat the commitment as binding.
3. Draft the personal statement first, then choose optional responses that add something new. Cap yourself at the number you can make genuinely strong.
4. Line up one recommender who can speak to your academic work, since Georgetown prefers a professor. Then decide whether to hold your file for a second letter.
5. Submit well before March 1, and check the 2026–27 deadlines and fees map for the rest of your list.
