Accept or Defer a German University Admission (TUM)

TUM has no deferral: accept in TUMonline, or decline and reapply. Declining does not revoke admission, and the aptitude result usually stays valid.

Accept or Defer a German University Admission (TUM)

At the Technical University of Munich (TUM), you accept a master's place by clicking "Accept study place offer" in TUMonline, not by email. There is no deferral: if you cannot start this semester, TUM says "you must reject your place and reapply". Declining does not revoke your admission, and the aptitude result usually carries over.

Where a US or UK university allows a deferral, you ask for it in a request letter. At TUM, the decision is a portal button and a calendar. Our view: decide by the dates below, not by the day your visa arrives, because the summer application window can close before you know. We use TUM as the worked case because its rules are published in full. Other German universities set their own rules, so read your university's enrolment page the same way.

Every TUM page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. TUM had not yet published the enrolment deadline for winter semester 2027/28 on that date, so recheck it before you plan around it. The letter you may need again later is the German motivation letter (Motivationsschreiben); the Motivationsschreiben guide covers it.

Accepting: the portal button

Acceptance is step 2 of TUM's seven-step enrolment list. The order matters, because each step opens the next:

  1. Check the admission in TUMonline. TUM also sends an email about it.
  2. Click "Accept study place offer". TUM asks you to do it "as soon as possible", and recommends doing it "before the semester begins".
  3. Add your remaining data. You "can also upload the documents at a later date".
  4. Sign the application for enrolment "manually or digitally" and upload it with your certificates as authentic documents (signature and seal, or a digital seal or verification code).
  5. Have a German public health insurer confirm your status to TUM digitally.
  6. Pay the semester fee, and tuition fees if they apply to you.
  7. You are enrolled once all of this is done, and only "until the enrollment deadline".

Two details catch final-year applicants. If your bachelor's is not formally awarded yet, TUM accepts "a preliminary certificate and your final transcript of records", and the certificate "must state that you have successfully completed your bachelor's program and been awarded the academic title". A "4.0-Bescheinigung" on your thesis "is not sufficient". And TUM says not to upload "CVs, motivation letters, or language certificates" for enrolment.

Why there is no deferral, and what declining keeps

A US-style deferral holds your place for a later term. TUM's process does not. You decline, then "Re-apply for the semester you want to commence your studies in during the relevant application period using your existing TUMonline-Account, and upload all required documents."

What you keep is the aptitude decision. TUM's page says that if the admission criteria "have not changed substantially, you will then be admitted directly without having to re-submit to aptitude assessment." The Electrical Engineering and Information Technology statute puts it more firmly. Section 5.4 reads: "Die festgestellte Eignung gilt bei allen Folgebewerbungen für diesen Studiengang." Our translation: the established aptitude applies to all later applications for this degree programme.

What you lose is your file. Your first documents are destroyed, so the new application needs "a complete set of documents". Plan for enrolment too: TUM's enrolment page says applicants who used a uni-assist preliminary documentation (VPD) "must upload all those documents that have been uploaded to uni-assist to apply for the VPD in order to enroll at TUM".

Our view: treat a TUM decline as a short reapplication, not a risk. The aptitude carry-over is the hard part of admission, and TUM keeps it.

The countercase: "usually" is TUM's word, not "always". If your programme's regulations changed substantially between the two intakes, the carry-over may not apply. Ask the departmental student advisor, whom TUM names as the contact for these criteria, before you decline.

Visa late: decide by the calendar

Germany's Federal Foreign Office says you "have to submit an application for a student visa to the respective German mission abroad before travelling"; the process is on its student visa page, and this page covers only the university side.

The dates below are for the MSc Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, which admits in both semesters. Its page gives the application windows as recurring dates with no year, so the 2027 rows apply them to the 2027/28 calendar. Check your own programme's page: a programme with one intake a year turns "reapply" into a twelve-month wait.

DateWhat happensSource

Read the table as one decision. The winter enrolment deadline and the summer application deadline fall in the same month. If your visa will not let you enrol for winter, decline and submit the summer application before 30 November 2027. Waiting for the enrolment deadline to pass first gives you only days to rebuild a complete document set. How late you can arrive, and the email to ask about it, are on our page on emails to uni-assist and German universities.

Run it as three checks:

  1. Will you be in Munich and enrolled by the winter enrolment deadline? Yes: accept and enrol. Not sure: go to 2.
  2. Does your programme admit in the summer semester? Yes: decline in TUMonline and reapply in the 1 October to 30 November window. No: go to 3.
  3. Can you wait a full year? Decline, note the next winter window (01.04.–31.05. for EE), and ask the student advisor whether your aptitude result will carry over.

Emails you may still need

You need an email only when the decline button is gone. TUM's instruction is to "contact studium@tum.de and state your applicant or application number".

Constructed example: declining after the button is gone

Two constructed examples, written by us, not real applicant emails. Context (invented): an applicant admitted to the EE master's for winter 2027/28 whose decline button no longer shows in TUMonline.

Weak version:

Dear Sir/Madam, due to visa delay I request you to kindly defer my admission to next semester. Please do the needful.

Revised version (70 words, subject line included):

Subject: Decline of study place, MSc Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, applicant no. [number]

Dear Student Advising team,

I was admitted to the MSc Electrical Engineering and Information Technology for winter semester 2027/28 and wish to decline my place. The decline option is no longer shown in my TUMonline account. I will reapply for summer semester 2028 within the application period.

Kind regards, Ananya Rao (invented name), applicant no. [number]

Why the revision works: it asks TUM to do the one thing its page offers, a decline, and gives the applicant number the page asks for. The weak version asks for a deferral that TUM's process does not have, and leaves out the number staff need to find the file.

Questions about German admissions

Can I accept a German university offer by email?

Not at TUM. Acceptance is the "Accept study place offer" button in TUMonline. Email is the fallback only for declining when the portal no longer allows it.

Can I defer my TUM admission for a year?

No. TUM's process is to decline and reapply for the semester you want. Declining "does not revoke the admission", and the aptitude result usually stays valid for later applications.

Do I have to do the aptitude assessment again?

Usually not. TUM says you are "admitted directly without having to re-submit to aptitude assessment" if the criteria "have not changed substantially". The EE statute says the established aptitude applies to all later applications for that programme.

Do I need to upload my documents again?

Yes. TUM destroys the first set, so the new application needs a complete set.

My bachelor's results are not out. Can I still enrol?

TUM accepts a preliminary certificate and your final transcript, if the certificate states that you completed the degree and were awarded the title. A thesis "4.0-Bescheinigung" is not enough. Once you accept, the next document is the visa letter: see the annotated Germany student visa SOP sample.

For a US offer, see accepting a US PhD offer: there the reply form, not an email, is the commitment.

It reads for why this programme and why now, how your modules map to the programme's stated requirements, and a specific case for Germany and the university. Use it if your reapplication, or another German application, asks for a letter.
